most hairdressers I've gone to are very professional. I always go in like "I'm growing my hair out, but chop of whatever you think I should chop of" and they never get carried away. Some times they cut a little, sometimes they cut more(that depends on my hair's health), but they never cut more than 1,5 to 2 cm which is really not that much considering I don't visit the salon as often as I should. If your hairdresser suggests cutting 4 inches(which is like 10 cm), then you should probably take their advice. Especially if more than one suggests it. Your hair is probably damaged and would look way better if you chop of a bit more. Then you could do smaller trims in the future. Shorter healthier hair always look better than long ragged hair. If you go to the hairdresser a bit more often, then you won't have to do these big chops. Hair on average will grow 1 cm a month. So if you go every 3 months(for example), the hairdresser will only need to cut like 1cm max. Which will leave you those 2 centineters.
@madiha54465 жыл бұрын
I always go to the hairdresser when my hair is really long and i tell them i want it cut to my shoulders because i find very long quite annoying and they look ao shocked and say why would you wanna cut all that off. Dusting is great. It's such a good way to get rid of a lot of breakage and brittle parts that naturally happen all along the hair shaft. You can do it at home, but it's harder because you can't see as well so ask a friend if you can. Also you can twist the hair completely and gently run your finger up the section of hair to bring out the end bits and trim those. I just did twist dusting yesterday and also trimmed the ends as well as point cutting so it wasn't as blunt. I also bought barber scissors, a cheap pair, but still better than say kitchen scissors and it worked great. When you get all that damage mostly off, your hair looks and feels so much better. You think it's not noticeable, but damaged hair creates a dull, unruly look that is subtle, but still there. My partner, who doesn't always notice subtle things commented that my hair looks much better and I lost only a few centimeters to take the worst of the breakage off. I also gave myself long side bangs too. If you mess up when cutting your own hair, before running to a barber to fix it, try point cutting blunt ends. Sometimes that can make a world of difference, Also always remember to take less off than you think you need. You can always cut more, but you can't undo cutting too much.

@Just_Kirsty6 жыл бұрын
I guess it depends of what you want. If you want to grow your hair longer and don't want to lose length, go for dusting, if you want to keep your hair at a similar length, go for trimming. Or do a trim every few months and dusting each month to prevent damage and still have your hair grow long rather fast. That's only what I think, I'm sure some people will have a different opinion, but that's what I like to choose when I wanna grow my hair.
@gabriellez6136 жыл бұрын
they're for different things so ...both is best? I agree the video title "vs" is misleading. it should say "and"
@angelliselopez6 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would do both. I would trim off 2 inches of my hair and then twist pieces of my hair and dust it off. When you dust it off you only cut some of the strands that stick out that are splitted and its as if your not cutting that much. You dont have to cut off 2 inches of course but I would personally. My hair grows rather fast when taken care of properly and it's long. I suggest oiling. And when untangling your hair act like your hair is gold to cause less breakage. Sorry for the long comment. Hope this helps.🙂

Breakage from hair ties and stuff I think. Mid-length breakage is common from that. I'm gonna start loosely braiding my hair at night cuz it's supposed to help from night breakage which allegedly accounts for 70% of damage

My family used to trim their hair every year and I couldn't help but think "It took you a whole year to even grow out that inch!" Anyway, I've been slowly dusting at home and carefully targeting only split ends and leaving alone healthy ends.. It takes forever but I've got time in quarantine lol. Only thing that sucks is I can't trim where I can't see.

oiling hair and doing masks with oil will repair split ends! i promise. I used to get split ends often and would trim my hair every few months. I've been oiling for about 6 months and I don't have a single split end... my hair had been chemically botched . routinley oiling my hair has made the strands thick and healthy whereas before taking care of my hair, it had felt like straw at the ends. i think there are a few factors that play into split ends, like the products someone uses. i think harsh chemicals in shampoos and conditioners can cause split ends because they strip the hair of its natural oils, making it dry. using shampoos withOUT stuff like Sulfates and Parabens will help too. oiling is amazing for the hair. Oiling 1-2 times a week will do the trick.

I'm not a stylist, but when she combed her hair at the end I still see the split ends as she combed it down?? Thought it was removing it? I was always told my hair had to be cut more than an inch and periodically trimmed to get rid of the split ends...just wondering?? And I heard the music, not sure why others couldnt hear it

Can someone explain to me how this helps breakage, NOT split ends? If the hair has breakage the whole strand of hair is shorter than your length, how does cutting it help? Don't you just end up with an even shorter strand of hair that will stick out and look frizzy just like it did before just at a shorter length? My daughter has very curly hair and it's very long, I don't want her to lose her length but I'm not sure what to do about it. She has a lot of breakage, my fault for not getting trims enough but trying to figure out where to go from here. Any help appreciated!

Great question Amy! You're right that there’s no miracle way to fuse your ends back together, but there are plenty of strategies for minimizing damage to your hair in the future. This is more about prevention help!

Should every hair stylist know how to do dusting?? I've been looking for a better fix for split ends for years and I'm surprised to only be hearing about this technique now... does dusting thin out the hair a lot?
@hair-dot-com4 жыл бұрын
Yes, mosts stylists should all know how to do dusting! We recommend making a consultation with your regular stylist to ask them more about how this would work for your hair!

I first learned of dusting, when I read about it in a beauty/fashion magazine. It said Lauren Bush Lauren had dusting leading up to her wedding day. I can't find anyone in my area who knows how to do this.

If you're trying to keep the length of your hair never cut the hair when it's wet it will shrink and be shorter than what it was to begin. Cut it when it's dry

Doesn't a trim miss shorter split ends? I have never heard of dusting. I am dealing with the same split ends at the top from when I had a stupid short haircut and I get frequent trims.

Doesn‘t it thin the hair out?
@breefenton89555 жыл бұрын
Ceyda Tham No. Leaving split ends will thin your hair out more - they’ll split to the root and you’ll have two fine hairs coming out of one hair follicle.... no fun! Very prone to breakage anyways so it’s best to cut it before it gets to the scalp.

I have a layer cut and lots of split ends. I dont want to go to a hair dresser cause they cut my hair too short. I have tried trimming and dusting my hair (I do it every month) but the split ends remain no matter what. What should I do? Please suggest (don't want to go bald lol)
@Demi.d3mi6 жыл бұрын
Aishwarya Pradhan split ends arent caused by hair length, its comes from not caring for your hair properly. You either dry it out too much or are brushing it too roughly, condition the ends more and brush gently

Want to grow your hair long? Here is the biggest secret: trimming your hair, or even dusting, will create frail ends that split quicker. Do not cut it for the sake of cutting split ends. Deep condition your hair every now and then. Dont use hair styling products. Do not use heating tools. Over time, your hair quality wil improve. Stylists always cut off too much. I stopped seeing them all together, as I was sick of hair cuts that looked okay from the shop mirror, but upon seeing it at home, it was a disaster. It takes a long time, but start eating healthy and keep yourself hydrated. Good hair begins on the inside, just as skin and nails.

@a basketboy i trimmed it once so far myself to even out the previous hair stylists' intentional uneven short cut. After that last professional cut, I discovered it was longer in the front and shorter in the back the hard way: after she chopped off so much, I could not put it up in a hairtie. She had cut off the top layers very short. The longest layer was barely past my ear. I wear glasses. I was asked to remove them, as they do to everyone who wears glasses. I cannot see without them. I did not know she cut such short layers on top til it was too late. The cut itself would be considered cute by some, a disaster by others, but definetely not what I asked for. I bit my tongue, paid, tipped and left. I let it grow out for a long time. When it was shoulder length, I trimmed it myself. Why I waited so long? I didnt want to be displeased and then cut more. It is bun-able length, so i rocked it for a couple of years. Then did the trim to fix the uneven growth. After the last pro cut during the first 6 months or so that time of not cutting it, I started to have split ends. I ignored them. Over time, they disappeared. I cut my hair about a year ago from now just to even it out. I cut with kitchen scissors. That is all I had. Some split ends formed a few weeks, and after a month or so, disappeared again. I no longer have split ends. I only use shampoo and conditioner, or skip the conditioner and use leave-in conditioner. I wash my hair every 2-3 days. It gets a bit greasy, but that is expected. It is down to my bra strap/armpit now. Ive been practicing this minimalist routine for a few years now. And my hair doesnt have split ends. It was totally accidental. I never bothered split hair prevention until I discovered cutting hair is what causes it, at least for me.

@a basketboyYou are very welcome. Goodness, i know. You know what the last hairdresser said when she cut it? "Oh, it will grow back." Out of years of my childhood and teenagehood, even adulthood listening to other peoples advice (cut it often and it will grow longer quicker... and more beautiful...).. I finally learned the truth. Every single hairdresser I have ever came into contact with, except once because it was strictly for a cool style for taking pics, has cut it too short. I have cut my own hair maybe 10 times in my life, and I could never understand why it always looked better than someone else with training has cut it... kitchen scissors maybe? Lol Im 29 now, and am finally growing out my hair long for the first proper time. Better late than never.. it feels like it is taking forever.. but once it got past the shoulders, time passes quickly.
@avvidream5825 жыл бұрын
@a basketboy You are so sweet :) I may do that sometime. I do plan on growing it out as long as possible, and when it is long to my liking, I have considered shaving the sides and back, leaving long hair only in the center top. Youre right, one is never too old to have long hair. One must also always remain young at heart no matter how much time goes. ♡

I always cut my own hair. Is doing a dusting possible if you can't actually look directly at the strands? My hair isn't long enough to pull it around to the front, but I'm wondering if just moving this scissors along the hair group (doing it by feel) in the hopes of catching the short ones, would work? Seems to me there's no reason it shouldn't work, as it's a very tactile technique, but I don't want to do anything that would be a complete disaster 😁

Then another technique that is often used to remove split ends is a full headshave! That way there’s no split ends to worry about and your head will be happier and healthier! Just add a bit of sunscreen before stepping out into the sunshine🙂
