Compare prices, and try to do a comprehensive termite treatment with your own chosen kind of termite DIY. I'm in Florida, and found I have a termite problem. I just got it treated with a major company. But I also bought some termite spray online from a company called Cedarcide. I've used their products before, notably one called Cedar Shield and I swabbed both wood balconies with it. They have remained free of termites after 15 years. I just ordered more that I can spray in my attic. Cedar does smell, so make sure you like the smell if you are considering it. I am going to be doing attic spaces, door frames, window frames, etc. It repels as well as kills, so that works for me.

OSB our particle board doesn't do well with extended over exposure from water, good job with the termite prevention, and PVC replacement at The rim joist but the panel board that you painted on the left side vertically off the door, that's called OSB (ORIENTED STRAND BOARD) it's going to get swollen from water exposure and become brittle over a number of years, nobody's perfect, you did well with the termite prevention and you added PVC at the bottom but need to change out that OSB and use PT OR PVC sheet also. Ive known about borax for quite some time long before this. Borax is the substance sodium tetraborate which is a natural substance- form of salt and boric acid. I ve used it on several occassions but the termites are still here. they multiply quick. You have to keep applying it.

termites burrow deep in the ground and move around, dig a trench around the perimeter of the house treat with borax, the wood you treat with borax needs to be soaked in it. I used a sprayer for portions of the outside, but the wood really needs to be soaked in borax. Borax is what they use to treat wood with and some other chemicals.

In the past most of treated wood was treated borax today is done with chemical ( because it is faster and chipper to use chemical) . There is no code forced the builders to use protected wood against termites when they build property so the use untreated wood.

@@ronh9384 You can use a yellow highlighter (yes its the highlighter that you use for marking important words in a book) open it and squeeze the highlighter fluid in the bucket with borax and warm water. It will be diluted in the water so you will hardly see the color yellow but if you flash a uv light on it, it will glow yellow. I personally squeezed 3-5 highlighters in a filled bath tub and flashed a uv light on it and the water glowed.

Yes I have ants year round and now I have termites! Winded termites are coming inside the home from cracks behind my furnace that I cannot reach. I tried to seal up the space behind my furnace with foam insulation but they are still getting through the cracks! I have a slab house. So no wood underneath my house. No basement. Maybe they are getting in through the attic? Or I have so many cracks and it's a thin and cheaply built small house so it wouldn't be hard to get in. What do you do if ants just won't take the bait? I have an infestation outside of my house. They've built a colony underneath my concrete walkway. They're also showing up inbetween gaps of my concrete slabs and my foundation. I've done borax mixed with many things like honey, sugar, peanut butter etc, they just ignore it. I'm not sure what their food source is exactly. I've ordered Taurus hoping that'll help somewhat.

Taurus and Termidor should help because if you spray it on the ants they will not die immediately instead, the ants will carry the poison to the nest and hopefully destroy nest. In the video I use Borax to put on an untreated wood such as studs and wood siding which will avoid termite from eating the wood. You should not have gaps in the concrete and slab you must sealed it with exterior silicon or concrete sealer (Find in Home Depot or Loews) the issue with gaps is that water are penetrating through the gaps and creating a moister environment which ants and termites are thrive. On my house you see in the video I sealed all gaps especially between the house and the concrete stair and tiled the stairs. The tile and sealer will prevent water to penetrate under the concrete stairs so that the area under the concrete stairs will stay dry all year long, so no termites can leave there.

Thank you, Joseph. Any idea how long to soak is necessary? The boards are long but about 2 cm thick by 9 cm wide. I fall somewhere in the middle of the strong-chemical-versus-all-natural camp. But I did notice at my U.S. lumberyard recently that even the grizzled foreman refused to subject his workers to cutting Chromated copper arsenate boards as he said that he felt he could no longer expose them to that dust. Given that I'm overseeing this project in a 3rd-world country and the workers will be doing this manually, borax seems far more ethical.

The studs should be naked (not rained or pain) and dry. Try 2 applications 2 to 4 hours between application (Before the second application make sure the stud is dry.) if you use brush. When you apply the first application the dry wood sucks the water with the borax substance until the wood reach saturation after the wood dry (within 2 to 4 hours) apply the second application. After the water is evaporated the borax (biric acid) stays for ever in the wood.

Yes you can put borax mix however, you will not be able to grow any vegetation on this soil for a while. After you put the borax solution in the soil make sure not to wet the area with water because the borax will be diluted and as a result it will lost its effectiveness. In case of water or rain just put the borax solution again on a dry soil.

If you already have termite ifestation you must eliminate the colony first. Borax will proptect your house from termites but you said that termite are already in the house and the house frame most likely is untreated wood, so driling holes in the house and putting borax will kill some of them but not all. In your case I will recommend you using termidor first in order to kill the colony. You must find the tunel where this termite are comming and eliminate the colony otherwise you should call proffesional to find from where the termites are comming.

Yes you can but if the area treated will be flooded with water in case of raining etc. the borax will be diluted or washed away. You also can buy a ready Borax powder from Home Depot made to kill ants, cockroaches and termites.

Termidor and Borax are different. Termidor is a strong chemical poison (for human also) that you put under the ground usually 6 inches under the ground around your property. Termites can not sense this Termidor poison and as a result they will come in contact with this poison. They will not die immediately instead they will infect the termite colony and the colony will eventually die. Borax is not poison to human , but very poison for bugs and termites. If you put Borax substance on a bare wood termite will not eat the wood because termites will notice the borax in the wood. You can not put Termidor on wood because it will not penetrate the wood and it will evaporate. When you put Borax on the ground every bug or termite that come in contact with the borax will die. If you put Borax on the ground around your house termites will notice the poison and they will run away from it. The Borax become a barrier (a fire wall) for termite and bugs but it will not kill the termites colony it just prevent them from coming to your property or prevent them eating your wood. Termidor is not a barrier, termites should go through (in and out) the poison ground. Termites suppose to come in contact with the poison and then infect the colony.

Your entry concrete steps area is probably concrete formed on non pressure treated plywood that doesn't have insecticide. The termites are probably moving on after eating most of the wood hidden by the concrete steps. That area is going to stay damp all of the time so might have a colony still looking for more wood to eat. Knowing construction crews they probably tossed a lot of wood scrap inside the steps area before pouring the final top section which locked in years of food for termites. Not sure if boring into the side of the steps and pumping poison in would help. I really doubt that's a giant block of concrete for your steps.

It should last for many years because after the water evaporated from the wood the borax (salt) istays in the wood for good unless, you wash the wood with water which will dilute the borax content.

When dealing with termites home treatments like this fail, with the home owner believing they are gone from the home. Unfortunately later finding out they were never gone just pushed into a different unknown location continuing to damage the home. Yes I have ants year round and now I have termites! Winded termites are coming inside the home from cracks behind my furnace that I cannot reach. I tried to seal up the space behind my furnace with foam insulation but they are still getting through the cracks! I have a slab house. So no wood underneath my house. No basement. Maybe they are getting in through the attic? Or I have so many cracks and it's a thin and cheaply built small house so it wouldn't be hard to get in. I don't know if I should schedule a visit from Orkin? They are so expensive. And they will want to do it many times and charge me over and over for it. Even if I got borax, I don't know where I would put it? Around my furnace but idk where they are coming into the house from? Also, I read if you just pour the powder down, it won't stop an infestation. Please help!

It's probably a pier & beam? If it is, it may have metal square things between house & beam...this is a natural protection against termites. You don't have a lot of water under and around the house, maybe (termites gravitate to water, I understand). There's not a particular termite problem in the general area. Finally, maybe the neighbors haven't had termite problems, or there isn't a really nearby neighbor to get termites from.

more then likely it is made with slow growth REDWOOD from before it was illegal to chop down redwood trees. I have the front doors of my families old beach house from 1909 and not one termite... solid REDWOOD and white washed with a green paint. They are almost bare wood now from years of beach weather... but still prefect. BUT the old pine and red alder furniture that was in same house... destroyed by termites.

Rebel Lemming, I believe you are correct. I have an old (90-100 yo) cabin in Santa Cruz mountains and never had termite. The original owners who sold it to me had it for 70 years (1984), still standing strong. It sits on piers so another deterrent I suppose but bathrooms have leaked, kitchen sink has leaked and subflooring changed by the bottom always stays good.

Several factors can contribute to termite resistance. A lot of the problems have to do with moisture which is the biggest problem. Old, drafty houses help any moisture evaporate from areas where water comes in. New houses that are sealed tight are great for energy efficiency but can be insect/mold magnets if moisture is not addressed properly....i.e. the great EIFS stucco rot disasters of the 90's. Wet crawl spaces and how ventilated they are is another big factor. Another factor in the termite resistance of older homes was mentioned by a previous poster. The oldest homes usually have wood from first growth trees where the density of the wood and resin content is highest because of the slow growing habitat from the original dense forests causing tight spacing in the growth rings. The resin is a natural insecticide. I have demolished old houses where the 2x4 southern yellow pine studs weighed 4 times what they weigh nowadays from fast growth pine cultivation(if you can even get them in yp). Also echoing the previous poster is that some areas have higher populations of termites than others like New Orleans, LA

This is a great video thank you for making this. But!...... I would just like to add this if you already have termites and you want to kill them this is the best method the reason being you do not want too much Borax in the water because it will instantly kill the termite and therefore it will not be able to bring food back to the queen so that she can ingest it and die. If you do not have termites and you are doing an new build or upgrading an old one you want to use at least by 4x the amount and use a sprayer to apply, this will help new termites swarms from digging in and starting a colony. Sprinkling borax under your house and around your foundation is also a good idea, the rain will pull it into the ground where they actually live. Borax can be harmful to some animals please do your due diligence and research. Boron is a good soil amendment. .
