My passion for skateboarding keeps me coming back. I’ve been a victim of 2 different random violent crimes from trying to skate from non skateboarders. Every time i go out to skate I have the thought that something bad could happen to me every time I go out to skate. It just makes me want skate even harder. Skate or die the world gonna try and prevent you from being you. Don’t ever stop shining. I just recently have been recovering too from the assault. The next time I step on a skateboard is the beginning of my story. Two years from now I’ll be grinding down hand rails and make stizzy clips 🤘❤️

@@xysmadiloniumI think it’s a spart 😂 sport and art mixed . Like boxing imo is an art too. Skating is a non competitive sport mostly most skate for fun . Boxers wanna win . Most skaters wanna beat their former selves imo . It’s a solitary sport with social elements . The olympics call it a sport but the Olympics don’t decide that the skating culture proved itself as valuable as javelin jumps . But that’s not it’s true value . Some lil kid at the park rolling around doing his first manual on flat. That’s the beauty to me . The worse part is skater gatekeepers or x games commentators who care about aesthetics first Nd only . Letting them fashionista “tough guys “ decide it or the olympics decide why skateboarding is is not good .

I recently got sponsored myself. The funny thing is that I'm not actually that good. I'm sponsored by a little skateshop called EltStaR because I taught his kids and his kid's friends how to skateboard. That and I'm known in my local area as "that guy with the wierd tricks".

Thank you very much! Really good explanations! I appreciate your work! (: I'm skateboarding for 25 years now (with some breaks) and being sponsored from our local shop for 18 years now. I agree with you that you have to be everywhere (contests, video premieres, parties) and represent the shop/brand to other people. The community part is really necessary! I had a break for 4 years and started again last year. I quickyl realised that skateboarding has changed so much and wanted to help our local shop to get more recognition because internet destroyed the local shop scene in our small town. I was really motivated to build up a video channel on youtube and watch my progession from video to video. I told them. I will put your emblem at the beginning of my videos and you give me some discounts for hardware and clothing. It went out really well and for me as a veteran it was a so nice to see that i am still able to get my tricks done. (; Since i am earning my money at work its not necessary anymore to get free stuff. For me its a nice feeling to help my friends at the shop which helped me many years ago when i had less money!

People always ask these question about anything, how do i get this? Or become that? Before the internets everyone knew, it's by DOING, not asking "How to?". Later once you've done whatever you desire and haven't become, THEN you ask any Pro what you could do to improve. Simple as that. Love your style Ricky, now i watch your VID anyway, but i had to address this common sense flaw in modern times.

I think the key thing to take away was the whole 'got my first sponsor at age 12' thing... Because while skateshops and brands also sponsor older people obviously, it says a lot about either your skills at a young age or the progression curve people around you noticed. I also do think it's somewhat legit to think of a sponsorship as 'getting free stuff' (publicity). A lot of sponsors are like that and as long as you keep using their product(s), they can't fault you too much to just do what you please. The more money's involved, the more a skater becomes way more of a company outpost / tool / etc. representing the brand harder. I know a _lot_ of skaters get free stuff send fairly regularly and that's actually way more the usual deal, than getting a bag of money for telling people how awesome a certain brand is. In the age of KZbin, you also get plenty of those 'make a video for us' type deals. We see this a lot (way too much) with the Cariuma tsunami of videos from skaters who got a free pair to 'review' (often with a bag of money included pretty much). Regardless of free stuff you'd want, I don't think people realise how some of these sponsorships are incompatible with being very open or honest about a brand. Of course, if you already skate in Vans shoes, it'll be easier to represent that brand anyway. You'd probably like it already. But I'd be careful about representing some of the more dodgy stuff. Just from the perspective of honesty, the whole Cariuma thing (other skaters) definitely annoyed me. We saw very few people talk about how the shoes are actually _kind_ of mediocre and expensive all things considered. Not terrible, but the whole 'revolutionary new skate shoe' nonsense we saw some KZbinrs talk about was pretty insane.

When you talk about going to a company and offering value if you don’t have local shops, are you suggesting people in those unpoplated areas move? The only shops near me that carry any weight are over two hours away and successful companies are far and few in between for thousands of miles.
