Loved your Helix tutorials and your natural, easy-to-follow, no nonsense, to-the-point, near-exhaustive and guitar focused instruction makes Ableton Live (a program I've used for a couple of years) more accessible. You mentioned MIDI. I use my MorningStar MC8 midi controller as a foot controller for Ableton's keyboard commands and it works beautifully. It keeps things simple. I am on the verge of replacing my physical looping pedal (and other pedals) with Ableton. I can't let perceived "purity of musicianship" interfere with my creativity. Anyway, you have a gift. Thank you. Addendum: The looping demo at 12:00 is a jaw-dropping game changer for those who struggle to get their loops in sync with a physical pedal. OMG!

Very nice video! I'm a basic user of Apple Logic Pro and I find it very intuitive. I have installed Live 11 Lite and is curious to see if it can compete with Logic. I like the look of Ableton Live and the minimalist flat style, but it seems like it's mostly made for MIDI and electronic music. Or so I thought =) I only record real life guitar and bass so this was a very helpful video. I would love to see you do videos on how to do fade ins/outs, create markers, change volume for a track and separate clips, how to export a song to MP3, use third-party plugins such as amp sims etc. My main goal when creating songs, is to just get down to recording with as little fuss as possible. Can the Ableton Live workflow provide that? Thanks!

Hey Chad. This video was great and super helpful. I’m setting up a very small home studio and went with Ableton as it came free with my UA Volt interface. I also purchased the Akai APC Key 25 as a midi keyboard. I’m looking to record classic rock kind of stuff and use midi mostly for bass and drums. If you could do some videos on how to add midi instruments and which ones sound best they would be super helpful. Would like to create a full rick band sound using only my guitars and the rest via midi. Great video and super helpful. Keep them coming please! You got a like and subscribe out of me. Great video Chad. So many tutorials go too fast and try to cram WAY too much into a session. Your pace is just right. One question…I use Windows and a ASIO driver does not show up as an option. Also, Ableton says that ASIO4all does not work well with Focusrite 2i2 (my interface). Any suggestions?
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey 3 ай бұрын
Glad you liked the video! My first suggestion would be to make sure that you have installed the focusrite drivers and rebooted your computer. At that point you should see it as an option in ableton. Select asio in the first drop down for drivers, then the bottom drop down should show the focusrite.

Glad the video was helpful. For acoustic guitars it's a similar process only you need to use a microphone on the guitar instead of plugging it in. Just plug the mic into your audio interface and in ableton select that input as your source on the track you're recording to.

I have a question if you’ve got the time. say I record 30 minutes of guitar playing through my boss me-80, just flipping through the presets and getting creative, how would I then cut the bits I like be it a riff, lick,chorus etc… and put them in files to use and work on later when I find use for them. I only had Ableton and my Scarlett Solo a week, and although I can play guitar I’m having a hard time with the software as I’m computer illiterate 😂, I’ve already watched this vid about ten times and i still need to keep coming back lol. Thank you 🇬🇧🤘

Glad you're enjoying the video! There are a couple of ways to achieve what you are wanting to do. If you want to export the sections to wav files use the loop bracket to mark the beginning and end of the section you want to export. You can also click and drag to select the section you want to export then right click and choose "loop selection" to mark it. Then go to file>export and that should do the trick. Note if you do the loop selection option it will turn on the loop function, which will be highlighted in yellow at the top to the right of the play/stop/record buttons. You will need to click that to turn the looping off. Another option is that if you want to drag the clips into the session view to have them as clips that can be triggered from there simply follow the same procedure, but after the clip is selected instead of exporting click and drag the audio and while holding down the mouse button hit the tab key to switch over to the session view. Then you can drop the audio into any of the clip spots and it will be available there to play on its own. This would be handy if you had a riff that was a verse section and a riff that was a chorus section. You could drag them over as clips into the session view then trigger them on the fly if you wanted to experiment with them that way. Let me know if this helps. Cheers

I understand you are using with Helix. Are you also using Native & how? Thanks, Dan
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey Жыл бұрын
I am using Native, and I use it as a VST plug in inside of Ableton. Typically what I'll do is when I'm recording guitars with Helix I'll also record the dry guitar onto a separate track. I use Helix as the audio interface when I'm doing this so that it's easy to accomplish this. The dry signal is on USB7 from Helix. So that way after the fact I can go in and add Helix Native to it and tweak the tones if I need to. Also I've used it on other instruments if I want to put certain effects on those as well.

how are you getting the audio from the guitar to your computer?
@matiascba85
@matiascba85 6 ай бұрын
Chad, thanks for the video. Anyways, I have the same audio interface as you (Zoom L-8), and I can't make it work with Ableton. No matter how I configure it, Ableton records only what is coming from the master, including the click and other arrangements. It's quite frustrating. Do you have any ideas? I've already configured the settings in Preferences to match yours, but still, it's not working.
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey 6 ай бұрын
The only thing I'd say is to make sure the right inputs are selected on the individual tracks. You configure the global settings, but when you go to the individual channels is where you set specific inputs. One thing that isn't immediately obvious is that the stereo pair 1/2 is the main output of the L8. So if you wanted to use the first two channels as a stereo input you'd actually select 3/4 as your input source on the channel in ableton. Same thing with the mono channels. Input 3 should be channel 1 on the zoom, input 4 would be channel 2 on the zoom, etc. I found this initially confusing as I think the numbers should directly correlate to the numbers on the zoom, but that's not how they set it up.
@matiascba85
@matiascba85 6 ай бұрын
@@ChadHuskey Oh man, you saved my life!!! I've invested so much time into this. "Input 3 should correspond to channel 1 on the Zoom, and input 4 would correspond to channel 2 on the Zoom, etc." This was the solution. Thanks a million, buddy. I was just about to uninstall everything and give another DAW a shot.

I'm really struggling with getting Plug In effects while I'm live playing, relying on playing with no effects and applying them afterward. Any recommendations?
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey 6 ай бұрын
If you want to hear the plug ins while you're playing make sure to turn on monitoring on the channel you're playing your guitar through. Depending on your audio interface and the processing power of your computer will determine if you can get the latency low enough to play without a noticeable delay. If you can get your latency down to 10 milliseconds or below it should be pretty unnoticeable.
@TheMack
@TheMack Жыл бұрын
I was sooooo enjoying my first practical steps in Ableton Live, it's really intuitive to use. Unfortunately I have found a deal breaker. That is the "loop bracket" that is used for punch-ins. The smallest size is 1/4 note (one beat) and it can't be any smaller. That's fine for EDM music, but as a guitarist I need to be able to do high precision punch-ins. There are some very clunky workarounds that's not even worth considering. Have you found a reasonable way around this? Otherwise I'm afraid it's back to logic Pro again... 😔
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey Жыл бұрын
I'm not in front of ableton at the moment, but if you zoom in you should be able to set it to much smaller intervals than 1/4 I think. I'd have to test to be sure, but try zooming way in and see if that resolves it. Going from memory so I reserve the right to be wrong on this one 😉
@TheMack
@TheMack Жыл бұрын
@@ChadHuskey Thanks for the answer. No go on that one unfortunately. I just tried zooming way way in, set the Adaptive Grid to "narrowest" and Fixed Grid to "off". This sure results in the ability to expand the loop bracket in finer and smaller steps, all good. But in the other direction it still won't go any smaller than 1/4 note. So annoying...

I am completely new to recording. I just bought a focusrite scarlett 2i2 and it came with the Ableton software. Now I am a bass player and want to record my bass playing. Maybe that's a stupid question but how do i get the mpeg track from my computer into Ableton in order to match/mix it with my recorded bass playing? Otherwise I only have the bass recorded but not the song I am covering. I can't find anyone on youtube explaining that part. Am I the only one not getting it? LOL I am no hi tech gal, learning by doing.
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey 2 ай бұрын
Very cool that you're getting into recording :) If I'm reading this right you want to bring backing tracks into Ableton then record your bass parts over them. You'll need to get the file(s) into .wav format. There should be free online converters that can change the mpeg file to .wave. You'll just need to google and find one to use. From there you can just drag and drop the file into a track on Ableton and you should be good to go.
@TheTaterCowgirls

@@ChadHuskeyThanks so much! After I formatted the mpeg into wave would I have to use a midi or audio track to drop it in? It's not a virtual instrument like in midi but also not really a recording in audio. You are talking to a complete hi tech idiot here LOL.
@ChadHuskey

Why not record in the arrangement view? Like set a loop in the arrangement, and then play it until you like it.
@ChadHuskey
@ChadHuskey 2 ай бұрын
I usually record in the arrangement view if I'm going to record in the more traditional method. For example if I know the song structure I'll usually just record on the timeline in arrangement view. I record in session view if it's going to be more things that are loop-based and chopped up. But most of the time I'm in arrangement view. In version 12 that's coming out this year you can put the mixer and arrangement view together. Once that happens I'll use session view less. I tend to use ableton as more of a traditional daw these days. But it's still really cool for being able to experiment and do fun stuff with. Which is what got me into ableton nearly 20 years ago. Just typing that out makes me feel old 😂

I appreciate what you've done with this video, but ... "If you're brand new to Ableton..." you don't know yet how the interface even works. A "How to Get Started" tutorial needs to start with those very basic, navigational "how to drive this thing" instructions. I don't know what a "bracket" is or how to operate them, I don't know how to change the start points on playback, all stuff you take for granted in this video and zip through so fast I had to rewind over and over to follow your mouse points. Way too many basics left out to consider this a "how to get started" tutorial. I need to keep searching.

I can't stand the metronome/click track culture infestation that has necrophiled Rock's cadaver. Nowadays nothing of mine thats perfectly in time makes past the pre-mastering stage. I blame this on the obsession of Live Jimi and Bob Dylan sets I ended up falling into and never quite escaping entirely when it pertains to musical tastes/arranging. And ableton live plugins have offset options, humanization, and various other ways to steer clear from that mundane techno-pop culture of keeping everything in perfect timing... Having action in the downbeat and triplet fills are essential rhythmic syncopative fundamentals. If not... Its just 50 year old rinse and repeat poppycock that has put Rock'n'roll in a blood eagle and SkullfukD its corpse so much it'd make Ed Gein wince in disgust...
