Thanks John! When I saw this title I wondered not so much what you would say but also how you would say it. I always cringe just a little bit when someone asks for help getting started online... Not so much because of the beginner aspect, but the one-size-fits-all advice that is given without understanding of OP's situation and motives. It generally lacks nuance. Starting small is definitely the way to go as you are suggesting here. Not much invested, we don't get frustrated. We have something we can build on. Then we thirst for more. To that I would add that if possible, pair up with someone that you trust to get you started. The person doesn't have to be an MMR, but just someone who can explain things as they apply to the individual newcomer. Hope your weekend is spectacular too!!!

I always cringe a bit too because the advice seems to ignore the exploratory aspect that helps people figure out what they want out of model trains. Better to spend $119 to get started and figure out what you want than to spend a few thousand and figure out that you are modeling the wrong scale or aren't even that into model trains. By the way, that thumbnail picture is David with my Dad around Christmas 2017 when he put G gauge around their Christmas tree.

Great video, John. Dylington started out as a Hornby Thomas, the tank engine train set, a Christmas present for my grandson. Which we added to over time ....cheers James 🙂👍

Thank you. He and David both started with Thomas sets. David got the HO Bachmann set.

Nice video, I would highly recommend a starter set. It could be very frustrating trying to overcome just the track problems, let alone other issues when just starting out.

Thank you. Totally agree! It’s best to get running without issues when you start.

Nice video and great commentary. For me, you start simple, but cool looking. and for a young guy/gal, accessories to play with to coincide with the train.

Great points. DC is best to start with as you say. Find out if you like it before you invest. Scale may be the biggest question. TT120 is actually a really cool scale and easy to handle and rerail. Much easier than N Gauge. And your layout can fit way more in the same space over HO. Worth considering. Great thought provoking video guys 👍 Thanks David. 👍 Happy modelling

Thank you. Some of the advice we have read online seems more likely to scare people away than to help ease them into the hobby.

@@TwoRailfans starter packs as you say are the beginning. 100% correct. Work from there. Decide on the scale first is my advice. 👍 Happy modelling

It helps to begin with an analogue controlled train set. I know of the perfect starter set for the lady's 5-year-old: The Santa Express. It simply consists of a red GWR 0-4-0 tank engine, an open wagon with a present load and a closed van saying Santa's Sleigh in Transit. The 00 gauge track is a simple small oval and comes with an analogue controller and mains plug. Here in the UK, the set costs just over £50, a very affordable price. It's the perfect present for any child out there to play with on Christmas Day. Who hasn't been bitten by the Model Railway Bug?
@TwoRailfans3 ай бұрын
Exactly, Kelly. The train set you are describing sounds very similar to what Bachmann markets in the US for starter sets. There's no need to be complicated or invest a lot of money before you know what you want to do, which you will only find out by running some trains.

Great video, great advice, i bought 3 starter sets, to get me started, and still have a bunch of back up for later, i believe Bachman is top pick for beginners. Thanks for sharing

Thank you. I think you can “might as well” yourself into spending way too much to get started if you’re not careful.

@@TwoRailfans when you add up the price individually of the starter sets, it's also a big savings

Of course! You don't want to be an armchair modeler. 😂 When this question is asked though a lot of the advice seems to be spending a few thousand dollars before you even get started. I'm not sure that's the best way for people just trying to see what the hobby is all about.
