I started plumbing about 6 months ago, total 180 on my career choices, I have a AAS in graphic design and a BBA in marketing. I'm honestly loving what I do, I wake up excited to do work! (not so much the past month, the company I work for is so unorganized, but I get excited if I do some actual pipework) I heard that Union workers do get much more money, but I also heard they can get laid off often, so I am up in the air about trying to join a Union right now. I do know that I love doing rough ins, working with trim and fixtures, and my least favorite is digging, I hate digging!
@RogerWakefield5 жыл бұрын
+inPHAMous, we all hate digging. And some companies struggle with organization. I have a young company and we are struggling to figure things out. But we are working, trying to get better every day. They gave me a contract to sign where it laid out all the positions that I could be looking forward to in the future from Training Technician (Me) all the way up to Senior Service Technician making god knows how much money here in CA! For Veterans many jobs can have you leave with a Trade Apprenticeship completed and all your Journeyman time done. GI Bill will pay for apprenticeship. It means that you will start getting Journeyman's pay day one. Also look up Veteran's in Plumbing Program. Also look into the state you are going into. If they give Apprenticeship credit for Trade school then it pays to go for an Associates degree because the GI bill pays so much.

@David Allen the companies have to make money. If you have a 1 hour job and it takes you 4 hours the company looses money. There is always an average time that it should take to do something. I have done commercial jobs for restaurants and I steady encounter new things I have to figure how to navigate. My son's school district has a 2 year technical school attached to the high school for juniors and seniors. They offer several programs, a couple of which are welding and blueprint/construction. One or two year certificates are available. If my son wanted to be a plumber would he benefit more from 2 years of welding and getting a full certificate or one year each of the blueprint and welding? And what if he decided to be an electrician or HVAC instead?

Hello @Courtney Durham ask you son which trade he would like to get into. The blueprint/construction course will help him in any trade. The welding will help him if he wants to become a welder or a pipefitter. I think it would depend on what he wants to be when he grows up. Maybe have his own company... You started in plumbing at an open shop. When did you go into the union side of your plumbing career and does that increase your changes of getting accepted into their program?
@RogerWakefield5 жыл бұрын
Maj3stik I went into the union 17 years after I started plumbing. They were recruiting and needing plumbers. I just got lucky on the timing! It doesn't increase your chances. They just needed plumbers and I walked in at the right time! Thanks for watching and commenting!

What if my only experience is fixing up things around my house? Like PVC pipes bursting in my basement or sink leaks or replacing toilets. Those were all common sense to me. Should I go the union route?
@RogerWakefield5 жыл бұрын
@David Allen there isn't a plumber in the world that had any experience before he did plumbing the first time. I recommend asking yourself residential or commercial, new construction or service, union or non union. I have done it all but it is different for everyone. I ended up residential, servive union... I started commercial, new construction, non union... You never know!

Hello I have a question. I am waiting for my local union to give out applications and it’s gonna give them in June 2021. I have no experience in plumbing or construction. There is a community college here that has a Plumbing 1 program ( basics ) it’s a 4 month program that teaches you basics and at the end you can get a OSHA 30 certification. Do you think it’ll be a good idea to pay for this program ( it’s $2200 ) while waiting for the union to start recruiting ? Or will it be a waste of money. Lmk pls and thank you.

Have been thinking about entering the plumbing industry. I am a welder now, but I do see the need for plumbers. Have been considering completing a introductory plumbing course at Eastfield College. Your thoughts on the worthwhileness of such. If you would.
