Great podcast, I have been an owner operator for 7 years and would recommend people definitely start out being a driver before you buy a truck. Look into niches that not everyone is doing, hauling steel, dump truck work, tankers, heavy haul, go into a job where you can learn on the companies dime and take your knowledge to start your own business.

When you're driving, a great way to stay healthy is to pack your own food. Food prep take some time, but it saves a lot of cash and calories you don't need. A nice cooler and thermos will preserve your food. I'm sure the owner operators can get mini fridges in their tractor.

How to make money anywhere. Do something people physically can’t do, won’t do, or don’t know how to do. I am a long haul team truck driver. It’s a huge huge learning curve. It’s a lifestyle change. I lost my abs, but I bought a house cash. 100k a year. If you want to make money in trucking. Its percentage or hourly are the best options, but not all jobs are this way. Secondly, tanker, heavy haul, flatbed, doubles and triples, team, and possibly container mostly pay more than regular dry van or refer. Mega carriers specialize in those. If you can go to school and hire on to good reputable tanker company l, LTL, such as saia southeastern, oak harbor, Old dominion, R&L or work for Walmart or UPS dc and hire internally you will do better than most truck drivers financially. Protect your license and drive safe.

Been in the industry for over 2 decades. Truckers are the first people to tell you the industry has gone to sht. Yr after yr it all gets worse. Regulations, costs to operate, salaries, compensation, insurance, fuel, repairs etc... I'd never get into this industry now. Also, lack of sleep is inevitable and sitting for 12 hours a day kills your health. It's the new smoking. The mental fatigue eventually becomes just as bad if not worse than hard labor. I can't stress this enough. Plus, 2023 and 2024 have been the worst yrs in this industry since I started in the mid 2000's. Supply n demand has crippled the industry. Not enough work, too many start ups causing compensation to drop severely just to survive and that's one of the many reasons causing many to get out. I know plenty of drivers working the past yr just to pay off the trucks smh and this is in Cali where the economy is much better than most states.

@@gerrymchale8965 I agree. It took me 10 years to acquire customers for my business. Otherwise, drivers make other people/companies rich while making pennies on the dollar for themselves. The first 2 years after covid hit, our industry was extremely busy and at it's peak. I had record yrs for my business due to everybody sitting at home ordering deliveries. Tons of people saw the transport industry at its peak and bought trucks and jumped in. The economy finally caught up in 2023 and 2024. These past 2 yrs have been the slowest years I've had in 2 decades. Sucks for all the people who thought the industry was always like 21/22. They now have equipment they can't pay off and don't have their own customers. Luckily, I'm almost out of the industry.

Unless he’s in a tight niche and/or has a solid book of business, 4 bucks a mile is hard to believe and I have access to numerous load boards. Building a solid customer base takes a lot of work and capital because most customers aren’t gonna even look at you unless you have enough trucks to move a chunk of their freight.

@@unshakeable_hits9826 you get into specialized niches like cattle hauling, you’ll see rates upwards of 5-7 per mile or more but again that’s with established customers. The risk is also higher. Those cattle wagons aren’t cheap, neither are the trucks that pull them or the insurance. These cats are just talking about pulling boxes which anybody’s grandma can do. Nobody’s interested in pulling a bomb or load of cattle on their backs.

On an operator's are getting slammed in trucking right now due to all the immigrants that can go to California and get a CDL. You can make money as a driver working for a large corporation, but the industry is tanking.

Trucking is one of the lower tier blue collar jobs. If you’re going to promote blue collar jobs at least do ones that require you to learn a usable skill. I did trucking for a few years and it was one of the most boring, lonely, and not worthwhile careers. Now I’m an aircraft mechanic clearing 150k a year with no overtime and only a two year degree. Don’t be fooled by the other truckers because misery loves company
@rogeliobarraza17725 ай бұрын
Can I ask what state you’re in? $150K as an aircraft mechanic is insane. Is it backbreaking work?
@Spachia5 ай бұрын
@@rogeliobarraza1772 being an aircraft mechanic completely depends on what company you’re with. Commercial/Cargo mechanics are typically paid the highest and the barrier to entry is honestly not that high. Commercial tops out at 65-70 an hour while cargo is 75 an hour. I work for one of the two cargo carriers. And the pay scale is set in stone regardless of what state you live in, and they allow you to transfer to different airports after about 6 months of working. The major benefit of working for cargo/commercial are the flight benefits too. If you work on GA or private aircraft or helicopters the pay is typically lower. No it isn’t back breaking work at all, and honestly I’m chilling more than working. The main drawback of working for cargo/commercial aircraft is you might be working night shift for a couple years as you build seniority to get a better shift but that sure beats spending days away from your family for lower pay while sleeping at a truck stop. To get into the field you need what’s called an A&P license which is a two year program at a community college, pretty simple. 👍

@@wiltedfour so did I. But at the cost of days away from family and working way over a 40 hour week. On a per hour basis, trucking doesn’t come close and is a much greater risk to life

Great video! Jay was spot on. Just started following him on Instagram. I'm a trucker with seven years of experience. Did one year of OTR, but switched to local LTL work after having kids. Things were good until 2022 when earnings dropped. Looking to go owner-operator soon. Got my CDL A through a mega carrier, which paid $5,000 upfront. I repaid $2,500 after a year and left. Now, I have all my endorsements. Regret not trying tankers or specialized freight, as LTL has slowed down significantly. Considering hauling containers since I’m near the ports in Jacksonville, FL. It might be convenient.
