Great! this gives me some concrete info on how to start. Yet, I am so concerned about some students not paying, saying I owe them a class because they missed or some other difficulty around money and me not knowing how to handle it. I don't need any legal troubles.

I always create a contract for my students to sign before we start with my policies clearly explained and have them pay before the lessons either in packs or by month. That solves a lot of problems on my end!

Hey Kristin, your content is very encouraging! How, if you haven’t made a video already, do you setup your own secure wifi (ie router or vpn if using some one else’s wifi)etc. when teaching online whilst traveling? Please enlighten us on some gadgets and their brands that you use, plus other costs like data subscriptions to connect to the internet in order to teach online and feel safe (from hackers) about doing so while in unfamiliar environs. Some of us just arent that tech savvy haha!

Hi, as always I enjoyed a lot. I have few questions in mind. 1) What do you think the basic requirements for the PC or Laptop ? (processor, RAM and OS) 2) If I am not willing to change address, will it be fine to start with my dekstop also? 3) Which English proficiency test is recommended from your end ? Is there any free certification available? Thanks in advance.

Hi! If you are working as a freelance teacher you are completely in control! You can use whatever equipment works for you (desktop, laptop, etc). If you are wanting to teach English I do recommend investing in a quality TEFL certificate to give you the skills and confidence you’ll need. If you are working for yourself you only need to get your English level certified if you choose to.

Of course you can work on a desktop

Very informative video, Jamie! I wonder how much trial and error you had to go through in order to present such a polished guide to freelance teaching?

Starting your own business (including freelance teaching!) means a lot of trial and error - but a lot of learning and growth as well. I hope I can help others fast track their own journeys!

If you are in the same country as your students, you can use bank transfer. Not sure which online options like PayPal etc are popular there.

Hi! I appreciate your videos! I am a longtime platform ESL teacher going independent. Question: Do you use and/or recommend scheduling software for yourself and or parents to use? Also, how do you manage prepaid classes? For example, if they purchase 10 classes, do you keep a notebook on how many classes are left? I am just trying to figure out what works best! Thanks for your time!
@ESLTeacher3652 жыл бұрын
Fantastic question, Jim! If you want a simple tool when starting out, I recommend Calendly for scheduling. It integrates with Zoom, online calendars and even payment gateways. There are free and paid options. For tracking how many classes students have used, I recommend setting up a spreadsheet (I use Google docs). If you choose to go with an all-in-one option like LearnCube, students purchase “credits” which are exchanged for classes and then purchased again when they are used up. If you want to check out LearnCube, I do have a video on it.

@@ESLTeacher365 Hello, thank you for this great video! I have a few questions. Do you think Calendly's free version would be good enough to get started? And do you know if Google calendar premium offers the same features as Calendly's free version?
@ESLTeacher3652 жыл бұрын
@@ileanamurillorealestatebie4726 I have never used the free version. The paid version isn't very expensive and is totally worth it in my opinion!

@ESLTeacher365 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeannie, it's really up to you! If you plan on teaching classes with several students, you can always get a second monitor - this way you don't have to purchase a new computer. This can be handy for looking at your notes on one screen and your students on the other.

Hello, I know the niche market I'd target, which is Hospitality English. I have an educational and career background in this market. I was wondering if it's wise to visit various hotels in the city (in China) with a business card with my social media contact infor and arrange a free demo class for them. A friend of mine told me that's the best way to gain students/clients for in person classes. Do you think that is a sound plan?
@ESLTeacher3653 ай бұрын
What visa will you be on in China? As long as you have sorted this out first, it sounds like a good start. I recommend doing research and seeing what exact problems you can help hotel staff with and offering a free or discounted workshop solving some of these issues that you can pitch to management.

Why do you use headset and microphone? Doesn't your computer have a built-in webcam?
@ESLTeacher3659 ай бұрын
A lot of companies require you to have a headset and microphone for quality purposes. An external webcam is higher quality than the built in webcam.
