Very informative video and thanks for sharing your knowledge. I will only disagree with the statement that click tracks will “remedy” poor musicianship and make the band tighter. If a band is not tight without the click it will only sound like a sloppy band with a click track. It’s important for the band to be as tight without the click track or the overall experience will suffer. What happens if the click track suddenly drops out in the middle of a song due to technical or electrical failure? The band should be able to be just as powerful and effective as if the click was still playing. With that said, click tracks are only enhancements, not band aids on poor musicianship.

Thinking of moving to an established church that want to go to stems. We have used Live quite a bit and I am comfortable for PP, Onsong, etc. the thing that is worrying me is that the church has an existing band that play acoustic unmiced drums and ampd bass as well as guitars etc. previously I have always had the drummer play ekits. Any tips for getting them on my side? They are showing resistance right now!

Thx for the video, our church currently uses the setup you explained l click r audio and they setup what they want to hear in their ears on stage and thats all the sound guys have access to use for front of house. This is i guess where you start but surely the way better way is to have all audio tracks sent to the mixer which is not affected by the stage musicians so the FOH and live stream mixers can mix all tracks and use for their needs. So do you use any DAW like Cubase etc or is Ableton live much easier? I presume i would setup cubase or ableton live with 16 tracks and send to the FOH desk and Live stream desk? Thx for your time. Craig.

HI Jake, thanks for making awesome contents. I'm in two Worship Ministries and we are just starting out(Both Youth Strength is under 50 young men and women) , and I am the keyboarist/ worship leader in both of them. I have a PSR S970 Keyboard as my main keyboard for the set, (For the 2nd Worship Ministry/Band, we are also looking to Purchase Yamaha MOXf6/Korg Krome later) now I'm looking to expand into DAW and Pads and making the worship more soothing and better. I am using a HP ab125ax Pavilion Laptop(AMD A10 - 8 GB RAM-1 TB HDD 5200 rpm most probably) and is planning to buy Ableton live 9 (standard/suite not yet decided)for now, and Omnisphere 2(later) for the purpose. Now there are 4 questions actually which I'm confused about. 1. On a Budget which Audio Interface to use to connect my Keyboard with the DAW, or what features in an Audio Interface I should be looking at? 2nd I'm planning to buy something similar to Livid Instruments DS1 to control Ableton Live 9(Because that's way to expensive for me right now), do you have a suggestion for that? 3. Is my Laptop okay for a Live set? What upgrades should I do to it to make it more smooth, Like I've heard that an SSD Drive and Ram Upgrades can make my laptop faster to run the daw. Do you think I need them now? Or what specifically would you suggest? 4. I'm pretty much new to this MIDI world, so How to integrate my Keyboard and the MIDI Controller(SIMILAR TO DS1) with the DAW through the audio interface. Can you help me through it? Thank you so much, as always God bless, Jesus loves you.

Thanks for the info. Super helpful and informative. I have one question. How do you extend a song (play an extra chorus or bridge) spontaneously - if the Spirit leads?
@philipodinakachi
@philipodinakachi 2 жыл бұрын
I figured a way to do it is to actually cut up your stems into bits (intro, verse, chorus, bridge) and arrange them in your Session View... Then you map each clip row "play" button to a controller button or your laptop keyboard. So it keeps playing a particular bit until you click for it to play the next one. I dunno if you get the general idea

Thank for the encouraging feedback, Eric. The backing tracks will be mono with this configuration. If you want to send the mix out stereo, you will need to use an audio interface with more than two outputs. @@Churchfront so one output for click and pair of stereo for the tracks...right? Back in 1998- 2000 my old band back in Puerto Rico we used tracks ...back then was called "playing with sequence" where I used to record the songs to my Roland xp60 keys sequencer ..just synth parts and loops ..then send a click track(via click output) to the drummer and the rest along with my keyboard sound thru stereo output of the keyboard to foh. From there I had control over patterns , mix , play ..stop. Pretty awesome. Back then playing with tracks was not that popular ...at least on Puerto Rico. Then after that I stared to seen ppl using portastudios....like Roland Vs1880....tascam recorders...was a great time in live music. Technology has change a lot and for good.

After 4-years you probably found a solution :). I had the same challenge and "my" solution was to daisy chain the speakers in setting up for small venue. At that point none of the click/cue were audible in the speakers but were audible in my IEMs. In my case, two 8 ohm speakers daisy chained = 4 ohms. Thankfully, my powered mixer can handle that load; make sure your mixer can the load or damage can result. Blessings:)

Hi, Jake. If you don't mind. Do you have a video on motivating or even provoking older generation and seems prophetically know everything from "god" but actually with wrong things on music technology? I know you will need quite a few Words of GOD, but sure we need to help my generation lol. I have been working for the main musical distributor here in Indonesia since early 1990, but I am not a "priest" for those kind of people to hear / listen to ( I am the one to listen to them (",) ). Or, should I move away from my ministrial group I join since nearly 30 years ago? Hahaha. Btw, I am still learning to share your videos with embeded translation CC into Indonesia - can you put the hint in every video of yours? So, we could later change Indonesian with some other local languages available on youtube. Thanks, Jake and GOD bless you with your musical ministry bringing more souls experiencing Jesus The Christ turning stages into altars for YAH Elohim.

Hey Jake, I need some help. Here's my setup. I have a laptop running tracks where clicks and guides are panned all the way to left and tracks to the right. I am using a split cable and I am sure it is not defective. I have no problem sending the tracks to the FOH BUT on my headphones, I don't hear the clicks and guides unless I turn up the FX knob. But I don't want to do that because it is not supposed to be sent to the FOH. Any thoughts about my problem?
@johnp428
@johnp428 5 жыл бұрын
Not sure if you have figured this out but I might have an idea. I'd suggest not to pan the click track and loops within your daw, but rather to pan it on the mixer. So connect the split cable to your audio device and then onto two spare channels on your mixer. From there, pan the click hard left and the loops hard right (you can change it if you want). Then keep the fader for the click all the way down so it doesn't come through FOH and send it to your monitor (make sure it is pre-fader or you wont get any volume in the monitors). Then send the loops to the monitors as well.

It’s not only a metronome, it gives you cues of where you are in a song and it counts you down to start a song. Basically a good click track goes hand and hand with the backing track, because it tells you where the backing track is at.

Is click-track fit for the purpose in corporate Church worship? Click-track, while being able to operate in perfect tempo and synchronize lights etc, it yet remains static, unbending and in-organic to expression unlike the Holy Spirit. It can also become an excuse to exclude any number of skilled and sincere musicians who desire to be involved in the process of Holy Spirit lead worship. Being replaced by a machine, can the Holy Spirit be pre-set through use of technology? Is it more important to keep in step with a machine or the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit cannot, should not and will not be pre-set. Technology can improve performance, but can it lead worship? The key word is performance. Is worship about, performance or the lead of the Holy Spirit? Surely only the Holy Spirit can enable people to lead worship. Worship is not a performance. It is giving thanks and praise to our Lord God by following the lead of the Holy Spirit. Can music be felt when using click-track? Technology can, however, be a useful tool with the right motivation. Say for instance, when used during practice sessions or learning a new song. However, surely songs need to be open spontaneity. For example, just because a song is rehearsed at 145bpm or 74bpm, doesn’t mean it will work best at that tempo when used with the congregation. Maybe during practice night, a song is rehearsed to start big with an electric guitar intro, but come Sunday, it seems right to start with just the acoustic guitar and vocals. What if, halfway through the song, the leader feels they should slow it down? What happens to the click-track then? Therefore, shouldn’t control of a song be left to the Holy Spirit? Should we highly value the Holy Sprit’s spontaneity in worship? Those un-rehearsed moments when anything can and will happen. Spontaneous, cannot have a pre-set tempo. Therefore, while click-track may be appropriate for musicians focused on singing worldly songs, or for practice, has it any value in anticipating Holy Spirit spontaneous, moments of exuberant praise or intimate worship? Does using click-track immediately tell us worship is focused more on the songs? Does it focus on the song and neglect anything that the Holy Spirit might potentially want to express during and between songs? Should songs always be played and sung how they are written, or should the Holy Spirit be ‘given licence’ to re-arrange them in meeting the needs of the moment? Can technology become an ‘end in itself’, a way to ‘keep up’ with society, and exclude the Holy Spirit? Can worship become just a human expression? Is being ‘boxed-in’ probably the best way to describe worshiping to an electronic metronome? Ultimately, should worship be about expression through the Holy Spirit, or a machine's accuracy? Should we be against technological advances? Or should we evaluate our motivation for click-track? Is it fit for the purpose in Church corporate? worship?
