You are spot on. #1 thing is the fencing. Most sites don't cover that! I just gave away my Nubians because I couldn't keep a fence up that would hold them. Loose, say bye bye to your trees, shrubs, gardens and flowers. They jump over a 5' high fence with barbwire on top a foot more. Looking for some dwarf goats to replace the Nubians/

Daniel you forgot to never underestimate a goat and mention that even if you have a good fence they WILL find a weak spot in the fence. the goats will find it and make you look for it and they will test your ability to make a secure repair job. They may act stupid but they are VERY intelligent when it come to escaping. I had one that would roll/push under a section of fence that touched the ground and get out in a low spot on the ground when he pushed on it. It only moved about 2 inches but that's all he needed! He was a Nubian goat full grown and tall but 2 inches was his number to escape. Every day for a week until I finally saw him do it! Should have taped it, couldn't believe it when I saw it. Great information on goats! Have a great day!

Great job of explaining the goat world. We have 12 goats and 2 are bucks. For the first time ever, our two does decided to jump the fence and visit one of our bucks. We are moving soon so didn't want to breed them yet, but love makes a way! We have two donkeys that do a fantastic job of protecting the goats. Coyotes lived next door and they never crossed our fence line. We plan to take our goats and donkeys with us. Another thing to mention about goats is they are such good therapy! If I feel down, all I need to do is go see my goats. They work little miracles in more ways than one. Love my sweet goats💙🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐💙

I really enjoyed your videos on goat farming. I am getting up in age and find cattle are just a little too much for me to handle any more. I have started with a a small herd of six and find them a joy to wok with. Doesn't hurt as bad for a goat to step on me like when a cow does. thanks for all your insight and advice.

We’re new goat farmers, with 2 meat goats gifted from a neighbor who raises them by the hundred. Your videos are very helpful as I work on a meat goat business plan. We have about 27 acres in southwest VA with about 13 acres of pasture and 13 acres of scrub forest and old field growth areas. We want goats to clear the land and sell to make some income in retirement. Thanks for putting these videos out there!

I have a different reason for wanting goats, kind of working backwards...… I feel that Hank, my Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees needs something to do. I've got about an acre and a half fenced off for him. At about a year old he figured out how to scale the 5.5 foot privacy fence. I rebuilt it MUCH taller with some modifications and now he just mopes around. He's miserable. I'm thinking his DNA is looking for something to guard. So, I'm pretty much just looking to get 3 to 6 goats or so to keep him occupied. I'm confident that the fence will keep them in, I've already built a good sized shelter and I'm working on a good water source. If anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it, otherwise; I'm just going to go for it and do my best.

Hey Daniel, Really like watching you and your family doing stuff all the time. Our families are very much alike lol I also live in Oklahoma and also in Law Enforcement. My wife and 2 daughters just got back from their yearly Vac from FL. Anyways we just bought some goats to go on our cattle ranch in northern Okla. Your videos have helped me out alot with different things about owning goats. I would like to see you talk about the Shots you give to them and how often you give them. I did watch the one video you posted about what types of shots you gave them that was good information but just need to know how often and at what times are good to give certain shots. Thanks and keep the videos coming. Matt.

Aww I miss having a goat. My family & I use to live on a ranch and The owner lived far away in Mexico so she had a ranch hand taking care of all her goats and animals. Well, one day we noticed all the goats being mean and trying to hurt this one little new goat. So my sister-in-law jumped the fence and got the billly goat(the big main goat) away from this little guy finally and brought him to our house. We took him to the vet and he had all kinds of problems broken leg and his insides were messed up. All kinds of stuff. From the other goats hurting him.It was so sad. That little goat was the best pet ever. He healed from everything. He was SO AWESOME he went from cabin to cabin hanging out with everyone living on the ranch and he’d play with all the kids and dogs. He was so cool. We had an old swing slide laying up on an old big tree and the goat would slide down by himself with my son every day. He would jump in our lap like a dog. I can’t wait to get some more.

Do you see a problem with 5 strain barbed wire with electric fence on the inside? Normally keep the electric 18 to 24 inches off the dirt. (stop the climbing and the head through the fence). Second how well do they handle the coyote issue? Since your in Oklahoma what vaccines you having to use to protect them from our local pest.
@genevievegreene1595
@genevievegreene1595 6 жыл бұрын
Please avoid barbed wire. A friend lost a doe when she put her head through and a barb got her in the neck. She bled out. The fence had been there a while, the goats were accustomed to grazing there, it wasn't the first time she or others tried to get at something on the other side. But accidents, and freak accidents, happen more often than we would like.
@ArmsFamilyHomestead
@ArmsFamilyHomestead 6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't try the 5 strand fence personally. I have never lost a goat to coyotes and we have plenty of them around here. My dogs do a good job of keeping them away from the goats. I have a video that shows all of the medications I give my goats and what I keep on hand.

thanks for the reply. I guess I will have to separate some of the 50 acres with field row for the goats. We want both goats and cattle. When we lived in GA we just ran 2 stains of electric since we didn't have coyote problems. Here in OK I cant kill them fast enough.

We are setting up our homestead in eastern Tennessee, so our land is not really flat, okay it's Mountains, I am just looking for something to control the undergrowth at the bottoms of the mountains, any thoughts? I'm sure you get bombarded with questions but I have a few if you have time. If you covered this let me know. Ive been doing some research and it seems like meat goats are the way to go for me. I keep a small piece of property. The goats will be in a fenced area that is 1 acre. Just got some great ideas with fencing. Think ill do the woven with the two strands of barbed wire. Questions..... my property is pretty scrubby. Lots of Autumn Olives bushes ( an invasive species here in Mi.) , Briars, lot of ground over such as wild strawberries and somewhat grassy. Do these plants pose an digestive or other problems? Will you snack on all of them? Also when people are referring to meat goats I'm sure some people just raise them for meat for their families but I'm looking to sell to buyers. Where do I locate buyers or see if goat meat does well in the area? No clue what to expect. Do most people want them butchered and processed or live? Being a small piece of property obviously 5-8 animals max is gonna be my goal. Im wanting it to be a profitable endeavor. Realize I won't be quitting my day job but would like a little supplemental income. I'm sure the initial investment will take awhile to pay. With barn, fencing, etc. Goal would be to get a quality breeding pair to start but breed more stock for the herd. Eventually adding new bloodlines obviously.

I signed the contract today for my 115 acre goat farm/hunting property,will close in a couple weeks,beautiful place has 700 yards of a big creek/river,white and red and water oaks,got wt deer,turkeys and a few wild hogs,now the work begins have to clear some acre for pasture,cut in a 40 ft road to the house site,power company requires 40 foot,will be around 1800 yard road to my house site.going to fence the whole acreage,plus interior fences,think I will fence 5 or six five acre pastures,do you think that will be enough acreage for goats between 20 and 30 acres for the goats,rest of land for house sight and hunting. Putting house on a bluff over looking the hardwood creek bottom and will have views for miles,I want to put in a 5 to 10 acre pond. Hi! I am new to owning goats. We just brought home our first 4 goats a week ago, 2 bucklings and 2 doelings, all Dwarf Nigerian. I'm interested in adding a Kiko buckling and a Kiko doeling to the herd, but it was brought to my attention that the difference in size might prove dangerous for the bucks during rut. Is there anything I might do or a unique way of penning them that would keep everyone safe and not leave anyone alone ( I understand they are herd animals and need to be together and not alone). Thank you for any help or advise you can offer.

How much time and energy does it require to raise a healthy goat? Basically just to have at the farm, eating grass and giving milk for the fam and a few others..

I’m not a farmer so this is a totally ignorant question, but would it be easier to rent a buck or rent some time running does with someone who already has a buck than it would be to keep your own?

About the goat barn/shed...would you suggest a dirt floor or wooden deck type floor? Do the goats exit the shed to go the bathroom? Thanks for your informative videos.

Dirt floor all the way. The goats will pee and poop in there and the wood would get rotten very fast. Just cover the dirt with wood chips or hay/straw.

Sorry for the questions, but I've been watching all your goat videos, and am getting interested in trying them as a step up from rabbits. I live up north, where it can get pretty darn cold. Usual January temps are around 10 degrees, and can go below 0. There is often a cold spell with temps below 0 for a couple weeks, and of course wind can add to that. So my obvious question is how do they handle real cold. Would I need a heated shelter for them, or just an insulated shed they could warm up together?

They do very well in the cold. They don't need a heated shelter, but insulated would be great for them. As long as they have a place to stay dry and out of the wind you will be surprised at how well they handle it. You will want to keep them some nice deep dry bedding and plenty of water though.
