As a kid I visited and lived on a few farms, enough to understand that some animals get slaughtered. When you're young and it's business you learn to accept it, but as you grow older and begin to understand life, the concept becomes impossible. I could 'snuff' a few people and not be bothered. People who have overstepped their usefulness. But innocent animals are off limits, to the extent that nature allows, when invoking natural selection. Even that is harder to understand now that I actually think about it, and don't just repeat the lessons of others.

@@naomimay82 some people can become vegetarian, and some cannot. I am A practicing Buddhist who was a vegetarian for nearly 10 years. When I was 34, I started declining and I could not figure out why. I did everything I was supposed to, and went to a number of nutritionists. In the and, a naturopath asked me to try eating red meat for awhile to see if that solved my health issues. It did. I had to come to terms with the fact that I could not be healthy without red meat. I spent years looking into this, only to discover that most food recommendations made by various organizations are politically or financially motivated. Now, I am determined to easy humanely produced meat, and am working on a plan to produce my own eggs, milk and meat while caring for the animals very well.

a goat was given to me a few years ago, an old ornery hard headed billy. I put him in two acres of overgrown property. He did a wonderful job of eating the weeds, briars, honeysuckles etc. He was entertaining, comical and first cousin to Houdini. He had a knack for escaping. No matter the weather he wanted to be in the scrub on my two acres. He was happy down in that overgrown area. A sleet and freezing rain storm rolled in so I went down got the goat and brought him to the barn and put him in a stall. Next morning I went to check on the goat and he was not there but he had butted 3 boards off the side of the barn and he was outside covered in sleet and ice eating honeysuckles. His head was harder than concrete and he loved to be smacked with a broom or board. He would back up, then raise up on hind legs and come forward then drop down and run to be smacked, over and over. Numerous times he snuck up behind and head butted me in the rear end. I also had 3 dogs and he loved to play with those dogs. That old goat was quite the character.

We started with meat chickens then got small dual-purpose cattle (primarily for meat). We added egg layers, got more serious about our primary cattle being for milk while they give us the calves as future freezer-fillers. Goats for milk and pigs for meat and garden tillers are next on our list. We already have an LGD and can't wait to get him a female in the next year or two.

My boss had goats at the shop where I worked (small farm). I paid attention to one in particular as they ran the property unfenced. This one, in particular, recognized my truck when I pulled onto the property as she would run to me or call out to me if she was fenced. I always made it a point to give her some attention at these times. Wish I could have a pair in the city where I live.
