I don't think that a beginning photographer knows when he wants to take a specific picture like if he wants it a sunrise picture or a sunset picture or backlight or foggy I don't really think he understands what will make his subject look better I think that's a thing you learn through years of experience But with the rest I totally agree and thanks for the video!

You did it well Mark! But I believe you forgot the most important thing; Go outside and experience the nature in its different stages. Experience the motions and impressions it gives you. Use your cell phone and take wide angle shots with it, or buy a second hand camera. It doesn't need to cost too much. If you don't get inspired, then drop the whole project. As you mention, there's free alternatives to the costly post processing software. I use RawTherapee and Gimp. Both works well, and there's nothing Photoshop can do, that Gimp can't. The downside is that Gimp is slower... And a lens bag is really not necessary either. A good backpack will do the same trick in the beginning. Most people who go to places worth taking photos of, have a nice one all ready.

Mark, add: Shoot for yourself. Take your time, Make the effort, Enjoy yourself/ have fun, Get there early, Keep it Simple, Patience - Persistence - Perseverance, Learn from mistakes, Gear doesn’t matter, Work the composition & Practice - Practice & Practice some more.

Ralph - great points - shoot for yourself is probably the best point. It has to be what you like. Don't try to shoot for someone else's approval. And the practice, practice, practice is key - the more you shoot the better you become if you review your work - learn from mistakes and then go out and try again.

A lot of really good advice. The only thing I would add is that once you purchase your camera and lens whatever you choose, stop reading and watching camera reviews, they will drive you crazy. Just enjoy the equipment that you purchased and don't even think about buying new gear until "you" find that you've reached the limits of your current camera and lens. It will take a lot longer than you might think🤗
@MarkDenneyPhoto4 жыл бұрын
Right! That’s so true - nothing will make your camera feel outdated than continuing to watch reviews!

This is my 5th year into serious photography but it took me 2/3 years to realise that it is all about the light. Photos can he cropped and improved in so many ways but, if the light is not correct, this is all a waste of time for a great image. Just discovered your vlogs and love your sincere and informative presentations. Thanks.

Important video, well done. In all my hobbies I found out, often too late, that research (sweat equity) saves money. In that regard I would suggest adding more things to your first section (light). A rough idea of composition, finding a location, how water, sky, all the component parts play with each other. An outline of the process might help in selecting gear. Also, and this becomes more of my focus as i get older, physical limitations. Probably most can all but ignore this but for me long hikes or steep climbs limit my photography. I have found a full articulated screen on my Pentax K-70 is more useful than I had imagined allowing angles that are challenging physically.. As I am never all that far from my truck a simple sling bag is much easier to deal with than backpack. Also, I can afford the extra weight of a geared tripod head that has helped counteract the "mechanics of age."

I would recommend to start off whit your phone camera. The cameras in our smartphones today is surprisingly capable of capturing beautiful images and this way you can start for free learning and understand the light, weather, time of day and compositions in practice. It's important to read and getting information first but then get outside and do the things you read about, that's the best way I learn new skills. As far as your first camera goes it must be a interchangeable lens camera and I think it should be a mirrorless camera from any brand out there, it doesn't matter. Get what you can afford and spend way more money on lenses rather then the camera itself.
@MarkDenneyPhoto4 жыл бұрын
All great advice!

Another great video Mark. I find your points about the gear spot on. Unfortunately way too many beginner photographers spend way too much money on gear they think they need? And it’s easy to believe you need all the stuff. You don’t have to spend much time online to get that impression. Many of the most popular photography videos on YT contains the name of a camera brand in the title. This sell, big time. I wish more beginner photographers could understand the camera they use is not what makes great photos. It would save them a whole bunch of money they could spend on something of more value. The value of skills exceeds the value of gadgets by a million miles. And skills are ever lasting.

Thank you for this video. I have been photographing for awhile, but I feel that I am always open for new ideas and thoughts to better my creativity. I used the Canon 6D with EF 16-35 f/4 L lens and I love it. This video helps me to look at the basics and what is that I need, along with having me think about checking my gear to see I have everything I need and all is in order. What I get stumped is the how. How can I get my photos looking professional enough to start my own YT channel and sell my work? How can I get proficient at PS/LR like yourself and other professionals?
@LegatoCirion4 жыл бұрын
Great video! I think pretty much all of it was on point. The only thing I don't completely agree with is "You can learn all the stuff at home before even going out for the first time". I don't know about you, but there is only so much I can remember when learning a ton of things about stuff that I don't have any experience with yet. And trying to keep lots of advice in your head and implement it all together for the first time rarely goes well. I think it's far more effective to get little pieces of information between rounds of practice. Especially because then often you'll also be like "Ooooh, I could've used this technique there and there", and you'll be much more attentive!
@MarkDenneyPhoto4 жыл бұрын
Thank ya friend! Yeah "home learning" can certainly get you going but then on-location practice has to pick up the rest.

Awesome insight Mark..I know when i first got into photography i was taking pictures of everything, not knowing what i liked more than the other. But now that i have been doing this for a few years, i really found my niche is in Storm/Lightning Photos and also Astrophotography photos. Mostly my storm photos are done from my garage (safe place to be) and its usually late at night or really, really early in the morning. I love to just sit there and listen to the thunder and watch the lightning light up the night sky. Every bolt is different and cool to watch as it dance across the sky. I would love to expand my visions a bit, i like all the landscape photos you take absolutely beautiful. Keep up the awesome work...Stay safe.

My hint for finishing. There are great programs out there that are absolutely free. Ok, Adobe products are the "industry standard" but ... For my Fuji raw files, Raw Therapee is amazing. It is just as powerful, if not more powerful than Lightroom. Really Mark, I'm not kidding. Might make a good video if you downloaded it and tried it :) Plus the free Gimp Photoshop alternative has come on in leaps and bounds. Both programs are available for Windows, Mac and even Linux. I can even run them on my Chromebook if I want to take a lightweight laptop with me for editing when I am on holiday.

I totally agree. I certainly use PSP pro, which is something you pay for one time, meanwhile PS is a subscription, and if you're not into post production several days per week (like a pro), the money is waisted. Sure there are many other free programs, and they are certainly good. But i just want to point out that PSP is good for both beginners and pros. Then a final word Mark should have said: "Just go out there. It is the most important. Not the gear."

Before thinking of the gear I started learning about photography and after 2 years and a half I was able to buy two others lenses for my landscape and nightscape photography. I still struggling with the tripod as I have borrowed one but it's nit sturdy at all and in case I wanna do focus stacking the camera shakes and moves every time I change the settings. Hi, many congratulations on the well-deserved milestone! Great video for beginners. I think the most important thing about any form of photography, or anything, in general, is doing proper research. So I believe the sweat equity part should really be stressed a little more. It would be great if you could run through the entire procedure you go through before heading out to shoot. Things like how to research the location and what points should 1 visit, how to properly research the weather, cloud cover (I think you use the app Clear Outside), so maybe a rundown of the app, how to estimate what kind of light can one expect once they reach a location etc. I know it might be too much but something along these lines would be great! Thanks and keep up the great work.

In terms of beginner lenses for Canon DSLR cameras, use the kit 18-55mm lens and the Canon 55-250mm lens (both are decent cheap lenses). Do not get the 75-300mm lens as the quality is not as good.

I would LOVE to learn more about reading weather forecasts and such so I have a better idea if I will get a good sunset/sunrise with great colors or if I will have some good fog. Right now I have my camera setup just in case, and most of the time don’t get good weather so don’t get a photo. Maybe a future video idea? Great video, thanks for all of this!!

Hi Mark, being about 18months into seriously taking up Landscape photography a lot of what you said resonated a lot so for any really new to this I think it's a very good summary. Probably just say that, for me, KZbin is in the same category as a polariser and L bracket, sure you can take photos without any of them but once you 'have' them you never want to go back - well if you use a camera not a phone for photography. Just under 'Finishes' you didn't cover printing your photos and how to separately 'softproof' them for printing. I've no interest in the Instagram click bait scene. My aim is to start geting some of my photos printed and mounted. I'll have to use a good Lab to do it as can't justify the cost of a good printer and don't have the house space for one that could do the size I want. I haven't researched that yet but most KZbinrs I follow like You, Mike Perea, Nick Page, Thomas Heaton, Gavin Hardcastle, Adam Gibbs etc stop at the screen editing stage. Would be really useful sometime to have a whole episode on printing guidance and covering people like me that have to use a Lab. Many Thanks, stay safe and keep up the good work.

Hi Mark, Loving your videos. I only got into photography last year and still trying to find which genre i love the most, so trying it all at the moment. Just wondering what is the app you use for weather conditions and cloud coverage etc? I hadnt thought about checking high or low clouds to tell what colour sunsets you might get and so on. Thanks for the help. Looking forward to you next video. :)
