I use a fence post for leverage myself. It also keeps better control of the breaker bar (never use a torque wrench like this) so it doesn't fly up and put a big dent in the side of that black Beemer when the stem snaps.

It’s a good way of running the torque wrench, but a nice hack, just use a regular wrench

instead, extend the shaft with a long tube. use leverage

I've snapped both the locking key (needing all four locking nuts to have metal added with mig welding before they'd unscrew) and on a different occasion snapped the lug nuts themselves, again needing the welding treatment to get them out. My top tip is to use a long bar but to support the socket to avoid snapping them.

Basically you want as close as possible to pure torsion on the bolt head. You don't want to add "bending" or "side load" which increases the stress on the bolt making it (and the socket) more likely to break.

@simontist I've since used the jack to support the socket for this purpose - and abandoned locking wheel lugs.

Flex head breaker bar with the handle as close as possible to in line with the plane of the bolt head. Rest a jack under the pivot point for extra support if you prefer (less bending and side load on the bolt, less likely to strip)... Oh and chock the wheel you're working on!!

Great idea.

Dude...Firstly, squirt a liberal dose of "Penetrene" on those nuts. Allow at least15 minutes to sit & 2nd use a "cross" wheel brace, so you can apply equal & opposite forces to undo the nuts. This issue is usually caused by young idiots at the garage or wheel & tyre place, who set the "rattle gun" on maximum torque then hold the fucking thing 20 seconds longer than necessary on each wheel nut whilst tightening.

The best way is to properly torque the lug nuts when you put them on. Then they don't do that.
