How to get tax identification NIF Number in Portugal also known as fiscal number

How to apply for NIF number (tax identification number) in Portugal. This is the first thing you need to sort out if you moving to live in Portugal. Without NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal or Número de Contribuinte) number, you can't become a resident, rent or buy real estate, buy a car, and so on... So here is my story of how basically easy it is to get this formality sorted if you know what to do and where to go. Rules are changing constantly so keep in mind that this information is actual in June 2021.
In general, if you are an EU citizen you will need to provide a Passport and Proof of address (most likely from previous residency address - Bank statement or Utility bill)

Small update: We got our new address sorted for NIF number. In a normal situation, you need to call your LOCAL (within your municipality (concelho)) Financas and book an appointment. Booking can be placed ONLY via phone call. But if you are lucky enough you may be able to make an appointment via email! We needed to wait 11 days for our appointment. On the day of the appointment, we were actually the first ones at 9am so we avoided any waiting. What was different from our 1st appointment with Financas is that they did ask for proof of address and as per provided note it should cover at least 6 months... So in our situation, this paper was our rental contract + Passport. ALSO, important notes are that each person has to have their own appointment booked. And if you having kids under 18 they also need a NIF number for school! This was something new for us! But now this is sorted and I did apply for a password so I can manage my account online. Will see how long it will take to arrive. Will keep you posted! ;)
