I use to use an 1 meter XLR-cable when I use my Geofon. Sometimes I use even longer cable depending on the situation. I have notice that it get better with handleing noice, because I then can like touch my recorder without risking to get handeling noise compared if I would have had the geofon cable straight in the recorder! 😊
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
That's a great idea David! Makes definitely a difference.

So listening with headphones, the fet head is probably extra with this recorder. Just lowering the knob doesn’t make any difference/advantage. It kind of sounds that we are loosing some bass and definition at the top. Either from the preamp not working enough or more likely from the extra electronics on the signal. would be interesting to hear with a zoom though. Thanks for sharing!

What do you mean?
@lorenzo47082 жыл бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds Just an expression hahaha, I mean that it's very sensitive. Though I'm not using it to record ambiances. I think the geofon is a great layer to add bass to any recording, so I'll try to attach to whatever it will stick to and make sounds with it, mixing with other contact mics and the USI pros for example. With the Geofon, a contact mic and a microphone, I can get the Bass, the Body, and the "Air" of a sound. Sounds bigger than life.

Interesting device to have though is, as you said, is it needed with thr sound devices? Whats the noise floor like on the fet head? I can see this been very very useful on a on camera xlr rig though. Great video as always though, your passion for sound recording is always a joy to watch.
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
Hi Edward, Thank you so much! You can see the noise floor in the first example. I attached a photo within the video. It makes a much bigger difference with the contact microphones. I also bought four FT phantom and use them with the RODE NTSF1. At night in quiet streets it really made a difference. When things are loud, it won't matter as much.
@ChR_is2 жыл бұрын
great video as always. loving the geofon. it's by far my favorite microphone! haven't tried it with a fethead yet, bit you inspired me to try that out for every quiet sounds :)
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! Thank you so much for watching and I can only agree with you. Maybe one day he could do something about the cable sensitivity and maybe comes up with a waterproofed version. That could be fun :) About the FH. You can really see the difference in the noise floor of the first recording of the door. Also, the sound recorded in the park had less noise too. During the editing process of the files, I could clearly hear it.
@ChR_is2 жыл бұрын
for contact microphones that do not have an XLR connector I can wholeheartedly recommend the radial engineering sb-4 die Box. it's been a game changer for my contact mic and hydrophone recordings :)
@ChR_is2 жыл бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds I have mainly used a fethead for dynamic microphones with great success yet. I thought it wouldn't really work with the already quite sensitive geofon, your video opened my eyes. definitely going to give this a try. cable noise from the geofon is an issue. I only use it for static recordings where I can place the geofon and its cable in a location where it will not be moved/touched. it's still an outstanding instrument of course, but with improved cable handling noise and maybe even a waterproof version it would be even more perfect!

@CreativeRamy Жыл бұрын
im a little confused, when would you use the phntom powered one? because you mentioned on the bridge that it wont give phantom power back to your device i.e. the mic so if one buys the fethead phantom one could assume itll be ok in all situations?
@FreeToUseSounds Жыл бұрын
You would use the phantom powered one for devices that need phantom power. If you would use a phantom powered one on a microphone that doesn't need it, you would most likely damage the devices.

Hmmm, interesting as always but there's no real noticeable difference in sound as you said. Worth testing all the same, and it will be curious to see if it makes any difference to contact mics. Anyway, cool video as always Marcel. Thanks, and thanks to Libby for more awesome filming. Wishing you both a great weekend.
@FreeToUseSounds2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching! The FetHead does not make the sound sound better but the trick is that you need less gain to reach a certain level. As a result, you need less gain and generate less noise in your recordings. I went out last night and recorded all night with the Rode NTSF1 and four FetHead phantoms, and that's when they really shine. :)
@cryptotrader27792 жыл бұрын
@@FreeToUseSounds Sure, I get that but I thought you may get a boost of some frequencies. Anyway, would be cool to hear the NTSF1 recording difference. Maybe in the next video. Thanks for the reply.

Is it dangerous to use the phantom power from the mix pre to the geofon? I thought they couldn't be phantom powered because of the circuitry
@stevesargent87312 жыл бұрын
there are two versions of the fet head, the "fet head phantom" and plain "fet head". The first one passes phantom power through, the other doesn't. I take it he has the one that doesn't
