How to Get the Best Phone Plan in Finland in 10 Minutes

When you move to Finland, you want to get a local phone number. At first, you want to grab a prepaid number because you can get it instantly. However, a postpaid plan will be cheaper in the long run, and in this video, I will show you how to do it step-by-step.

Additional info:
- the Telia LIDL 30€ voucher deal is available until 25th of September 2022
- Each carrier (except Moi) has a feature on their website where you can get exclusive deals if you are not their customer (as shown in the video)
- With Moi, you don't get bills. Instead, you pay the bills with a payment card. You input the details during sign up. You need a card issued by a Finnish bank
- There is a chance that the carrier does not let you become their customer even with a deposit. In that case, try another carrier/operator
- As mentioned, it's very common to have unlimited calls, SMS, and mobile data
- Remember, you can always change plans/operators as long as you don't have a fixed-term plan

Very informative. The deposit is fair, lowering risk to a company by getting money up front first but the consumer has that money applied to the bill. I have an unlimited everything plan for $45 USD per month with Xfinity Mobile.

I have been getting my phone plans changed at Gigantti many times because they get commission fees for selling those and they have then also offered me like 50€ discount at the same time from their store. It has been more valuable than wavered opening fees, gift cards and what not I have been offered when asking for offers. Yes, it many times is worth it asking for an offer and usually by asking you can get at least the opening fee off. Two years ago I got 120€ wireless keyboard for my computer for 50€ because it was first 20€ discount from being a return refund piece and then I got the extra 50€ off from changing my phone plan at the same time.

The rule of thumb is that anyone who moves to Finland permanently (usually for longer than a year) is entitled to the benefits. There are some benefits that have restrictions. You should go to a Kela office and apply. Some benefits, like child allowance need to be applied separately. Kela website has the best info: www.kela.fi/

Hi, In Moi Mobili offer what does it mean 6gb shared internet? Can't u just turn on ur hotspot and share it with others around u?

I read it again and it means the plan has 6gb/month of data available altogether. You can use hotspot and that's probably what they also meant. The wording was a bit weird.

Moi Potty is mostly for couples or families. You can get multiple sim cards, and you share the data amongst the cards. 9 euro is the base price, 4 euros is the maximum for calls (not service numbers which annoyingly cost extra in Finland), and if you use more internet, you bill can never go higher than 15 euros a month. So, basically, its 15 euros for unlimited calls and data, and you can share your data usage with other family members... So, no need to get like extra plans for everyone.

Sorry to hear that. The reason is that in Europe there are certain frequencies the phones must support. www.kimovil.com/en/frequency-checker/FI Your phone must be sim-unlocked as well, which allows swapping sim cards.

It's a pitty that only Telia allows transfer from prepaid to postpaid and keeping the same number. I have a prepaid number with Elisa and would like to go for a postpaid but to keep the same number which is obviously not possible 😁

I am using Telia prepaid number for a year. Today I went to Telia store to ask to transfer from prepaid to postpaid and keeping the same number. They said that it is not possible cause I moved to Finland only one year ago and I need to live in Funland 2 OR! 3 years first (seems like they don't know rules either), only then I could ask for postpaid subscription. Initially, I thought they were kidding me, but they were serious. It seems like only way to keep my Telia number and transfer it to postpaid plan is to ask my finnish friend to register current number using his name and data and then he could issue a power of attorney in my name so that I become the owner of the plan. This is incredible. ))

It should be registered in Telia first. I'll try to figure out a way to keep my number. Will see if I can manage it somehow))

I think all of these phone plans, in Finland, are super confusing. I have telia since the beginning and it gets more and more expensive. Sometimes, when you go to a normal store, like Gigantti for example, the sellers there try to sell you a new contract from another phone company, which is super annoying. Those people say that it is normal for finnish people to switch those plans / contract every few month, that's insane. Yes it may be cheaper, but going back and forth seems so confusing to me. And you get a new Sim card, right? So every few month you would transfer the data on the Sim to the other one. Also I don't get how can you keep the same phone number? I know that Telia is 040, DNA has another number first, so if I would switch to DNA, why wouldn't they want to give me a new number? Obviously better to keep the old number, but how does it work? It's so complicated X.x Ps. So yea, then they call you back, the old seller, when you already ordered the new card, that you going to tell the other company, that you do not need it anymore. It's just so weird. Back in my home country, Austria, everyone has kinda the same price and there are a few companies as well, but the rivalry between the companies is so low

The operators take care of the number transfer. You don't have to change your number even with new sim. If you have a fixed term phone plan u should definitely look for a new deal after the term is over to get better pricing.

This is a good comment and I'm happy you brought this up. First of all, the Gigantti seller lied. People don't change every month or so, more like once yearly (that's what I do too). He/she probably tried to convince you to buy because they will get commissions on sales. Secondly, if your Telia plan keeps getting more expensive, that signals you to shop and change the plans. You can pretty much always find a cheaper plan from a competitor. You don't really need to transfer data to the new sim card. For example, all my contacts are synced to my Gmail account and will not be lost even when changing sims. Photos and such are usually stored on the phone. You will always keep your number when changing postpaid plans between operators (if you allow the new operator to make the transfer, as I explained in the video). I've been a customer of all four carriers and have had the same number for 20 years. The old operator will call you before the transfer initiates. As shown in the example, completing the transfer takes 7 business days, so they will try to win you over before that. The operators will deal with each other, which is quite good for the consumer because you don't have to do anything.

When did they start with a deposit thing? I have had Saunalahti and on DNA now and neither one asked for a deposit. Also neither were with a contract either, just monthly post paid. Contract were available but I never joined them as I was from the US and they are crooks with their contracts.

@@AleksiHimself Yes. When I got off the plane the first thing we did was to stop at an Rkioski and get a SIM for Saunalahti. It was a prepaid I kept for about six months then I switched to a post paid account. In 2012 or 13 I looked up DNA's site and did the same and have been with them, post paid bill not contract, ever since. It's like 21mbps for 16€ about and all unlimited.
