Dude, I'm not sure about the t-shirt, but this is one of the very best videos about filmmaking I have ever watched. 1. You have me convinced that you know your stuff. 2. You are economical with words (80 percent of KZbinrs would produce much better videos if they talked about 80 percent less) 3. You make things easy to understand 4. You constantly integrate images and don't make us just look at a talkinghead. Excellent and very helpful.

All very good information. While I do use vnd's, they always have vignetting issues. A good set of nd's will cost a few hundred dollars, so vnd's, in my opinion, are cheaper to correct in post or leave it as it can work artistically in some shots.

I'm rockin' the G7 as well. You, sir, have yourself a new subscriber! The only reason I would want to upgrade to a G85 or a GH5 is image stabilization and improved tracking. You can see in some of my videos where focus wanders because I have it in tracking mode. Now, I do it manually or use the a different autofocus mode.

Thanks for the sub! The G85 and GH5 definitely look really good. The handheld footage I've seen from the GH5 is borderline magical, although the autofocus isn't quite on par with Sony yet from what I've heard.

At 2:04 you said to have shutter speed at half the frame rate. I was under the understanding that you should follow the 180 degrees rule and double the shutter speed of the frame rate to make the video smoother. Is there an advantage to going half the fps?
@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 6 жыл бұрын
I meant the same thing as the 180 rule, just said it in a different way. If you're recording at 24fps, having a shutter of 50 (1/50th of a second) will mean the shutter is open for half of the frame.

Colors have improved on the G85/GX85 since the G7. WB is a lot warmer compared to G7 WB. Do you know if they improved Cinelike-D color rendition of skin tones ? Thanks for your video
@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 7 жыл бұрын
The main cause of inaccurate colors with low contrast profiles is too much compression. The G85 has the same level of compression as the G7 while recording 4k video, so even if the Cinelike-D profile was improved in the new camera, it's likely there are still problems.
@sooovann8908

Thanks for the info. I'll probably buy the G80 since the GH5 is way too expensive for me and I don't need all the features and perks it proposes to the video geeks crowd. I think the G camera line up is a great balance.

I'd argue that Cinelike-D's color is just not right in general. It needs some tweaking, and is a bit too orange and "plastic". Cinelike-D's profile is pretty good, just contrast-y.

Hi Ken, I have a Lumix FZ300 and was thinking of getting a G85 to get some better results - specially shooting video. Although the difference in IQ and dynamic range etc may not be all that great, I thought I should cut my teeth on the G85 before I chose something else like the G9. What do you think of my choice?
@wellnesspathforme6236
@wellnesspathforme6236 2 жыл бұрын
How did it work out? Value is everything, so can't comment on your wisdom without a price, but you can't really go wrong either way -- unless you have a specific NEED for a G9, which you don't.
@ray32825
@ray32825 2 жыл бұрын
@@wellnesspathforme6236 I got both, a G85 and a G9 (with the Leica 12-60). I don't like the buttons on the G85 and land up using it as a second camera when I shoot rocket launches. I use the Fz300 for video and control both the other cameras remotely with the Panasonic app when shooting long exposures of the launches.

@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you do. I've found the 25mm is very versatile; it's wide enough for wide shots but long enough to get super nice closeups. The 42.5mm is a borderline telephoto lens, which makes it great for shooting closeups and portraits, but it'll be more difficult to use than the 25mm in tight spaces or if you want a wide shot.

I've spent way too much time playing with the cinelike D profile, with the leeming Lut in resolve 12.5 and I've come to the conclusion that Standard and Natural are the only profiles that will not destroy skin tones. Frankly, the amount of color grading the G7 can take, with that puny codec, is not that great and it's imperative to be as close as you want to be in cam. The argument of Cinelike D increasing the dynamic range by 1/2 is ridiculous. If you shoot a film your lighting and contrast should be controlled, since it's fiction and you decide what is going to be seen, so why bother with a preset such as Cinelike D that start destroying the thin color in cam. Good call from you to tell your audience to use Natural. I find very little difference between natural and Standard. I also NEVER use AWB for video. I always manually balance, and sometime use the K scale.
@mackuss
@mackuss 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'd either use Cine D with the COntrast NOT turned all the way down - or one of the others with the Shadow curves giving as much dynamic range as you can.

I can't seem to manually adjust exposure compensation like you do at 2:08, and it's constantly automatically adjusting. And I can't seem to find the setting that affects this, any ideas?
@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 7 жыл бұрын
It depends on what you have your metering setting set to. If you have it set to spot metering like I do, the meter will show an exposure value based on a fix point. If the brightness of that fixed point is changing (because of camera movement, movement in the scene, or changing lighting), then the meter will adjust. The default metering setting will average the brightness of the entire image, so any changes in the scene will change the meter. That's why a grey card is useful; you can use it as a fixed reference. If you don't have a grey card then I would ignore the meter and set the exposure using your histogram.

Ah I see. Rewatching it again, I think it was my mistake. You were changing aperture/shutter speed and it looked like you were manually changing exposure comp. Thanks for the info!

I can't figure out how to record on a 4:3 aspect ratio on the G7 Everytime I hit the record button it goes to 16:9 . Any help would be appreciated
@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 4 жыл бұрын
The G7 will only record video in a 16:9 aspect ratio. If you want a different aspect ratio, you'll have to edit the video after the fact.

When you said set your shutter speed at half your frame rate I assume you meant double?...
@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 5 жыл бұрын
Technically it's half. If your framerate is 30fps you're taking a frame every 1/30 of a second. A shutter speed of 1/60 means the shutter is open half the time each frame is shot.

If you go to Lowes (in the US) you can pick up a grey card in the paints section for free. It is called "software" grey, code sw7074. I contrasted on my actual 18% grey card and it disappears into it, the colors are just visibly the same. The advice on step-up rings for filters is dead on, you save people a ton of money with that advice alone. Great vid. I really appreciate it.

Shutter speed double your frame rate, not half! Scrolled through quite a few comments and didn't see that mentioned.
@AlteraSound
@AlteraSound 6 жыл бұрын
You're correct if talking about the number. Technically the full shutter number is 1/50th of a second, which is half of the time it takes to record one frame at 24fps.

Tall Guy Films. Mathematically, 25 FPS would be written as 1/25 secs. Double would be 1/12.5; half would be 1/50.
