MODLIST LINKED BELOW // In this video I go over the content added by the 4 medieval mods I use to set up the PERFECT medieval playthrough in Rimworld. Of course, you can always add more mods for even more content, but these are the key ones I can't do without, and the game still feels pretty vanilla (just old timey) so this modlist is perfect for anyone newer to the game or anyone who likes to keep their modlists simple :)
STEAM COLLECTION OF THE 4 MEDIEVAL MODS AND THEIR PREREQUISITES: steamcommunity...
Collection of the additional mods I use in almost every playthrough, but aren't essential to a medieval run: steamcommunity...

I would also recommend Vanilla expanded Vikings, Medieval Medizine (or Aphotekari) and Medieval Prostethics. Also Vanilla expanded Security i think it is, that adds working Katapults. For more Fantasy, im currently playing with the 3 Race Mods from Lord of the Rims. There are Elves, Dwarfs and Hobbits. All come with their own Race Bonus and seperate Starting Szenario. Like Dwarfs are good Miner/Crafter and like to be underground, 3 Elve-, 3 Dwarf- and 1 Hobbit Faction, some are hostile so you can recruit them. A new Biom called Mallorn Forest with Mallorn Wood. TONS of Armor, Weapons and Furniture. You´ll also need Doors expanded because you get huge Castle Gates that just look incredible. New Plants and Food Recipes like Lambas Bread and Dwarfen Mead. All in all a huge Amount of Content in just 3 Mods, where you can roleplay on a Theme like the King under the Mountain. (Dragons Deszent ;) Would highly recommend it.

This is delightful. I've tried to do a faux medieval playthru using the Vanilla Expanded packs, plus Doors Extended which gives you castle gates, ED Embrasures, Vanilla Furniture Expanded -Security which gives you Ballista and Catapult. A few others of less import. But it's all sort of haphazardly cobbled together. Yours is orders of magnitude better.

I also liked the different amount of food you can use and what you could do with plants and animal fat. I feel like it would make things feel more realistic? It would be cool as well if there was an option to later move into the next “era” and research higher tech stuff, and as you do the raiders also move into this era and get guns and such.

Good timing? I started a medieval run last month and went on the forums to try to find a generic, no magic, no buggy races, medieval modpack and couldn't find one that had been used successfully by a streamer. I ended up with the same as yours but with a couple of inclusions: 1. Forgotten Realms: a good generic fantasy race mod that isn't too OP. Allows you to choose which races are allowed. 2. Total Control: allows you to edit faction pawns to give each faction their own distinct apparel, race, etc. (you can sink a LOT of time into it, but thematically it's awesome) 3. Faction Customizer: Allows you to edit other factions' ideologies. Also good for giving everyone a similar hairstyle, color, etc. 4. VE Vikings: Just more medieval stuff The above four let me recreate typical fantasy world factions with orcs and kolbolds as savage tribes, dwarves and elves as civil kingdoms, etc. all with their own weapon, apparel, and caravan animal loadouts. Others: 1. VE Books, VE Books Expanded, and Hospitality: The theme is that we're building the great library. 2. Medieval Prosthetics: This is a well-balanced mod. The best prosthetics (equivalent to archotech) are only 100% for limbs, and the eye, ear, etc. prosthetics just remove the disfigured tag -they have 0% efficiency. 3. Medieval Medicine: Seems pretty good and well-balanced, but pawns can't be assigned to carry it. 4. Majestic Trees: For ambience and theme, this mod rocks. The forests are just gorgeous (like the dark forest for Medieval Overhaul, but better). It's a bit hard to find things on the map, however, even though the trees have mouse-over transparency (and to get transparency you have to add it at world gen). 5. Powerful Ai Psycasts: This puts a nice spin on combat and makes up for not having mechs. Suddenly everyone's puking! I don't bother with ice. The only thing that ever spoils is meat, and I just turn that into pemmican or smoke it. Note about Medieval Overhaul: I really like Medieval Overhaul, but check the Steam Workshop discussion for issues. It's a work in progress, and the creator doesn't seem to update it or respond to bug reports often. It has some issues such as some bench add ons not connecting (bookshelf only connects to advanced research bench, has a really short range, etc.), and the textiles workflow (you get a hide from butchering and have to tan it to get a leather, but not all animals generate hides, particularly VE Vikings and Alpha Animals animals). Arctic and Timber wolves in vanilla don't give pelts for me, either. Also, the "royal" stuff doesn't satisfy Royalty titles. As always I appreciate the clarity and organization of your videos. Would love to see more RW play throughs, though! What happened to the archotechs one?
@Jadziax
@Jadziax 3 жыл бұрын
This is an awesome mod list you've put together!! I've heard good things about Forgotten Realms. And yes, modded animals need to be patched to generate hides with Medieval Overhaul. So weird that you don't get pelts from wolves, I haven't had a problem with that, hmmm... there's even see an arctic wolf rug I made in a clip in this video?! I haven't tried with timer wolves though. I've seen others in the workshop mention the royalty thing--I suppose it doesn't bother me because I rarely seek medieval titles, haha! I can't stand when my pawns get all persnickety about work types lol. But all great points that you've made :) the mod isn't flawless especially when combined with other big mods, but I genuinely do think it's the most fun medieval mod out there right now. Thanks for the nice words on the vids! I haven't given up on the Archotechs one, I just got bogged down with irl stuff and haven't had time to edit more episodes together for a few weeks. Hopefully I can jump back into it this weekend, though I'm afraid it's almost been too long to pick back up :/ haha we'll seeeeee :)

I know those mods and generally medieval games go more for a "fantasy medieval" experience heavenly based on what people know from DnD and movies and all that and it looks great for that kind of content. But just for those who are interested: plague masks are not medieval, they are first mentioned in the 17th century. Medieval times end around 1500 (there are different dates in the range between 1450 and 1550 and you can make good arguments for most of them, but 1500 is often used as a compromise). Wall torches were not that common, especially not inside. People used candles made out of animal fat or (preferably) beewax, oil lamps which were really common in the Roman Empire due to easy cultivation of olive trees around the Mediterranean region, the use then declined during the medieval age and increased again with the emergence of new trade routes and - most important for peasants - rushlights and fatwood. And the hearth itself was also a light source, of course. The whole "dark forest" thing is also more fantasy. Basically every piece of forest in the medieval age was tamed and used for ressources. People also didn't really cook in a big couldron, they usually had a small cauldron hanging down, but most of the cooking was done in ceramic pots placed next to the fire, sometimes even a second cauldron on a stand next to it as well. Well, actual professional kitchen chefs cooking for noblemen in castles in the late medieval would cook more with cauldrons. But they also had crazy stuff like automated rotisseries that were moved by the hot steam and a very smart system of wind wheels. So it's not like they were representative. But I guess if you go for a castle scenario, it's fine. And poorer people in rural areas sometimes only had ceramic pots. So it wasn't really a "putting everything in a big pot" like we like to do it today, they usually had a lot of different pots with different types of food and you would combine it in the bowl or during the meal. The further you go back in time and/or the poorer the people where the more likely was it that they wouldn't even have an actual stove or a modern type fireplace out of stone at the wall with a chimney. It was quite common to have an open fireplace away from any walls that was often not in the common round "camp fire" format, but basically a line of fire wood, so you had more space to place pots around it. Sadly, you don't really see that in media. And... well... mashed potatoes. Okay. I don't think I have to explain it. Soups were also not really common, more an early modern trend. BUT... most of the weapon and armor stuff looks really cool. There are a bunch of different styles from different periods and cultures, but you know, it's a medieval mod, it doesn't specify region or time. The two highest tier two-handed axes are very early medieval "viking" like. The highest tier of both the one-handed and two-handed hammer look actually extremely accurate. The two-handed spear mutate into mancatchers, but okay. You can't have everything. Yay, mail armor. And the helmets look just all very good. But I would really like to see a poleaxe. It was a very common weapon for knights in the 15th century and was especially popular for tournaments. And you just never see it in games. :(

This storyteller wasn't updated for 1.5 and author said they won't be, it will be merged with Viking pack at this point. However, I found a workaround, sorta. Grab Vanilla Faction Extended - Classical, and grab Remove Industrial Stuff, this will disable all industrial and post-industrial tech in the game (so neither you or AI will have it). VFE:C will replace all tech with classical\medieval era tech, so you will have medieval armors and weapons, no torrents but ballista, castle walls, etc but you must pick Classical storyteller and scenario "New Empire". All other medieval overhaul mods seem to work, I have few of them and "Samurai faction" mod as well, it works and is integrated perfectly fine.

Steel is issue when you want to play with multiple mods, i.e. Dub's Bad Hygiene. But just read the mod dev. apparently, he's working on it. I played it with Combat Extended, just exclude vanilla vanilla factions, (every one of them) You're good.

Great Video on the Medieval RIM Mods. Very great breakdown and very informative. Can you also add these mods to your mod pack -Geological Locations Mod, duel wield, prepare carefully, body harvesting mods, and also stand alone medieval weapons & armor mods. Thank you so much and Love the channel.

Thanks so much! I do already use Geological Landforms (I have another video about it), Simple Sidearms (instead of dual wield), and prepare carefully- but I don't consider them medieval mods, which is why they aren't in the mod pack. I have a separate steam collection for all my "baseline" mods like that that I use in every playthrough! As for the medieval weapons and armor mods- personally I think Medieval Overhaul has plenty of weapons and armor already, so in the interest of keeping this mod pack as compact as possible, I'm sticking to the weapons/armor that come in the mod!

@@Jadziax heya I was wondering can you send us a link to your baseline mods as I looked on your steam profile from your medieval mod pack and your profile is private so I can’t see your other mod packs? Thanks for the help :)

Thank you for this video! I've been trying to get a medieval game going, so I will try this! Also, what is the statue at 14:57 from? I've not seen anything like it and I would love the giant cross.
@Jadziax
@Jadziax 3 жыл бұрын
Let me know how you like it! That statue is from Ideology. If you choose "Christian" as the style of your ideology, the statues your colonists make at the art bench will have crosses on them lol. I thought it would fit in with the medieval theme!

I'm going to do a playthrough on this, but sadly they don't have Ice updated for 1.4. Time to go cannibal again! :D When you lose, you're lunch.

I may have to try the medieval overhaul mod I used to use the medieval times mod (which has been abandoned and then reuploaded by other people) since it didn't block the advanced tech, I could use it as an addon or add another mod to fully block the tech

Egyptians figured out how to make ice, there's no reason your medieval pawns wouldn't be able to make ice in a cellar. Heck, the game should have cooling towers for maintenance free cooling.

For me, it wouldn't feel complete with Giddy Up. I hope to create a LOTR style clash of armies with Rimworld.

It is a shame Giddy Up appears to have broken a bit since the last official update. Least in regards to enemies arriving on cavalry. :( *No version rollback is available yet on steam for 1.3 anyway.

I don't know if it's still up to date, but you can medievalize the empire with the Medieval Empire Overhaul mod. steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2646321064

Consider uploading your (unedited) twitch VODs to this channel for posterity. I'd love to watch your medieval playthroughs but they seem to have been purged by Bezos! :( Personally I've been enjoying the same mod combination (+ a few more, like Medieval Prosthetics/Medicine/Drugs/Quest Rewards/Empire Overhaul -- check them out!) but I have been bothered by there being too many new objects (furniture, apparel, weapons) to the point where it just feels redundant and gets in the way of the game play. Something feels off with the research progression too, e.g. Complex clothing/furniture doesn't mix well with the new medieval techs. Since Ideology I've seen some unthematic ideoligions being generated for factions too, which is immersion breaking. Everything else is great, though, very impressive mod combo!
