I feel like all the commenters saying "it's all the fault of the money men!' are missing the point. This was a project that fell out of the hands of everyone involved. The writers can't agree on how characters should talk. The playtesters can't keep up with all the bugs because there's so many, including ones the programmer said was fixed. The publisher keeps overpromising on release date and features to placate backers and investors. It's extremely common for the creators of a successful indie title (like Shut Up and Jam Gaiden) to want their next project to be bigger and better in every way. But they have no experience handling projects of that scale, and so many other problems surface that they never had to deal with working alone. Disagreements among coworkers, inefficiency in delegation, deadlines to meet, backers to keep updated. The game is so much larger--you might even need to use a new engine--so now there's so much more bugs. Development might have been fine when they were smaller, there were no expectations placed on them, no one they needed to keep updated. They didn't have as much time or money to spend on their passion project, but they also didn't owe anyone anything. The truth about game development is that a lot of it is paying off a debt. People paid money for your game, they paid your salary for the last couple years, and as a result there's a pressure on you to deliver. You staked your reputation on it. It's a pressure that kills creativity, it makes your chest feel tight and all you can think about is wanting to be free again. You can't feel love for your project anymore because all you remember are the problems. There's real resentment you now associate with this thing you used to love.

I mean that's true, but only for certain games. A good example to the contrary is Halo. With the recent lay off of lots of employees at 343, maybe told stories about how they had always wanted to work at 343 since they were a child and were now being laid off, which is sad. In the case of Halo, it was management that ruined the game. To be fair they did delay the game, but there was still so much missing. And that's on the higher ups for not delaying the game again. It's also on the higher ups for spending the first years of development making Infinite into a Hero Shooter. All the other people working there didn't have a choice in the say

You're not wrong DBI. The reason why anything fails....or has a troublesome production is rarely simply due to any one thing. Anyone who says otherwise is not thinking practically in my opinion....however in movies and in video games, the people who finance productions rarely are passionate about the story a movie may be trying to tell....and rather might be trying to make script changes to make the movie more commercially viable to as many people as possible. And this kind of interference in a movies script can really water down or even ruin a script altogether. And this isn't even taking into account the need for impossible deadlines at times. What if a game is not ready but the holidays are coming? Usually the staff are brutally rushed...and issues can pop up....or an otherwise promising project may end up being sloppily finished as a result. These are all things that happen....and they happen quite often. They are usually only part of the whole issue, but it is still a very important issue that devs ignore to their project's peril.

i agree that people cant blame a complex problem like this solely on one issue, but I do think that having people in a decision making position who have no real interest in gaming besides the profit can contribute to things like rushed releases (since they might not understand or know of any examples of what may result if a game is rushed). Or that terrible period just before release of an AAA game where just about everyone working has no life save their work...executive decisions that may make short term profits but in the long term makes little sense. I would say its at the very least a common contributing factor to a lot of games with troubled dev history.

Hopefully the devs will be able to avoid relying on meddlesome AAA producers in the future.. Im no expert but it doesn't look like a game that needs a gigantic fortune to be made....just some backers who care and also trust the vision of the dev that they are backing.

As of patch 1.0.4 this no longer works. Devs were adamant on blocking access to the dev room, which perhaps is proof that room was included as a form of protest.

Check this guy's next video. The exact same method still works, there's just a washing machine in the entranceway that doesn't do anything. And the dialogue is... different.

This is why I get annoyed when people blame programmers for games coming out half-baked. The programmers themselves are working crazy hours trying to hit impossible deadlines from business people who have no idea how programming works.

Incredibly sad... I've been struggling my way through the game and just beat the tennis academy but already it's been so buggy... Hopefully they can fix it with updates.

I stopped on trnnis course, there with the tennis against the wall. It's just impossible to clearly understand when you need to hit. It never works the same.

They made a great game called golf story, no major issues and was loved by most ppl. fast foward a couple of years, made another game called sports story. probably a bit too ambitious for its on good, bad story, shallow gameplay, and incredible buggy mess to include a lot of soft locks during quests and hard errors and this was after delaying it and then suddenly shittying it a few days ago with no warning. Patch "coming soon" This easter eggs probably made by a disgruntled programmer basically highlighting internal issues during the development.

It sucks that they are removing this. It's anti-art, it's cowardly, and worst of all, the existence of this video proves it's an ineffective waste of time. The damage was done. And the fact that they not only tried to remove it, but only kind of half removed it and are still "working on it" really belies an incompetence I wouldn't think it would be wise to trumpet in patch notes. "WE STILL CAN'T COMPLETELY GET RID OF SOME UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTHS THAT NOW LIVE FOREVER ON THE INTERNET" does not exactly project confidence or competence.

So the most recent patch for the game changed the text in the dev room to what I can only describe as the most obviously unnatural "Amazon social media spokesperson"-esque bullshit possible. I don't think things are okay at Sidebar.
