I grew up in the USVI in the 70`s, lived in St John and the High School I went to was on St Thomas, Volunteered to work on the ferry boats after school . When I graduated in 78, I had my sea time to get a 100 ton 100 pas Masters license it was called an Ocean Operators License back then, I worked in the industry for about 5 years, drove ferry boats, Dive boats, Crew boats, Charter boats, best money was made delivering boats from VI to St Martin, no cell phones or GPS in those days, Hurricane sitting boats in Hurricane Holes, but the best bang for buck was Officiating a wedding in re moat places by boat and doing a little Photography

I've always known you guys have an insane work ethic, but LOVE all of these behind the scenes vids showing how you've gotten where you are, what you had to do to accomplish this, and with this one, exactly what went in to getting your licenses! Collegiate athletes, fantastic students, then the deep dive into guiding/chartering. Man you two never-EVER-fail to totally impress & inspire! This is why you've been my favorite facebook page since it started and youtube page!

You guys ( girls) ROCK! the USCG does not give those licenses away, I understand the work you put in. I have my Chief Engineers License. I worked my way up through the engine room. I remember the first time I sailed as Chief my nerves were crazy, even after 17yr working aboard ship. When I went to the Gulf on a dive support vessel (gas and oil industry) was an eye opening experience to say the least. Anyway I'm following yawl and enjoying your videos. Great channel, captains! I believe the USCG counts a day as UNDERWAY for a minimum of 4 hours so time working on a boat tied to a dock will not count toward sea time. Also there is no requirement to get your 6-Pack / OUPV before getting your masters. If you have the sea time there's nothing preventing you from going straight for the masters. It's inspiring to see young women making a living on the water. Keep the great content coming!

This is not the only way to get a Captains license. If you own your boat and use it privately on the water for the time needed, you can get your Captains license if you then wish to use your boat for charter or otherwise where a Captains license is required. It is not required for private boats going fishing with friends

How do you record sea time before course work? Is it a special form you keep track of and submit later?
@GaleForceTwins2 жыл бұрын
You can track of your sea time however you like. A notebook, calendar, app thats up to you. When you apply for the license you will get paperwork that you will then write your sea time into. You can buy a logbook like this one to help keep track. Most log books are pretty detailed, all you really need is the boat type and number of hours on board per day. a.co/d/bbOlgKE
@timbailes80913 жыл бұрын
Ouch, Hi Ladies, you don't have to start with a Six Pak and the easiest way for most people is to volunteer as a deck hand and the owner of the vessel can sign off hours/days, there are formats for that. And you can smile when having your picture taken for TWIC with btw is a big time background check which is one of two as you will receive another one with the USCG that usually takes more than a year after you receive your lic. I find your videos good and informative but as I noted on the other video accurate information with correct terminology is a must. It almost looks like you are winging it on some of these, and that's a bad idea. Consider getting a copy of: The American Practical Navigator (colloquially often referred to as ). This will help you. Good luck

Nice explanation of the process, I think most people know about the sea time and the test but not all the stuff in the middle. Great to have a captain's license if you are actually going to take people out on the water for money but from what I hear it isn't something you necessarily want to have if you just take out your boat recreationally since if an accident between a vessel operated by a captain and a vessel operated by a non-captain took place the captain would be held to a much higher level of responsibility. I know it is cheating but that is the way the real world operates. I'm happy reading up and watching videos so that I operate as safely and responsibly as possible.
