Good video, I am one of those people who love toyotas, especially of that vintage, they where some of the most reliable machines ever. Also usually a pleasure to work on. Hope your having a good day Brian :-)

It keeps ME cleaner when working on them. It also helps your plastics and rubber components from dry rotting. The dust makes the plug wires and wire looms rot early.

It's supposed to be wiped on w a rag and allowed to sit before starting. If you have bad leaky wires to start you'll have a fire pretty quick if you don't. WD 40 stands for "water Displacement attempt or formula attempt #40. It was designed to repel water.

Since my customers often return, I always enjoy a clean engine AND there is a psychological value imputed to the customer when he opens his hood and perceives how well you are taking care of his car. So there is the more ethereal reason since Brian covered the practical reason!

Absolutely. You have to realize every used car lot, many shops, and dealerships have done this for years. I get so many armchair quarterbacks that have never rebuilt an alternator or don't understand how an ignition system works that just lose their mind when I power wash an engine.

Nice clean video. I have a question for you about my neighbors truck. 1998 Toyota 3.4 He bought a throttle body spacer and installed it but he said the motor ran poorly. He was alone and could not get it to idle so he just took the plate off. Any adjustments necessary other than the install? Did you go on a vacation? No videos for a week.

Back in the points ignittion days I would use starting fluid if the cap was wet and on the plug wire ends just make sure it dries first

Looks good, and makes it easier to find oil, coolant or what ever leaks later on. I imagine it helps with corrosion too because a clean surface doesn't trap water.
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
That is correct. People fuss that water can get into something and corrode it, but engine bays get hot. Water expands and evaporates when it gets hot. Add to that, everything in an engine bay is designed to withstand high pressure water. It's part of new vehicle testing.

Cars that have been sitting for a while or have busted seals leak oil everywhere and it gets nasty looking so a bit of degreaser and a hose makes it look brand new. I've always put a plastic bag over the distributor cap and the alternator (the one that has the open wires) and I've never had a problem. For any water that gets stuck in the spark plug galleries I've paper towelled out and then used WD-40 as it disperses water - so the engine starts easy. Don't hydro-lock the engine Brian!

I have a problem with my wife 91 camry with 98k orig miles . the brake is spongy sometimes its a full pedal sometimes not much of a pedal . I bled all the lines checked the master cylinder no leak I tried adjust back drum brakes all pads and showes ok I am disabled vet so it makes it a bit hard any ideas????

It could be that something was left off or there was a vacuum leak etc. Most 3400 toyotas I can think of are fuel injected and unless the spacer does something to assist the direction of air flow it may not help. Yes. I was in Mexico for a week. I had internet on my ship, but it's slow- no videos.

Yeah, that's the Toyota 5E-FE if I'm not mistaken, very stout engine. . I'd avoid getting at all on the engine. If you mess up taking out the plugs and get some water in the cylinders you can hydro-lock and screw the engine over. Now, granted, there's no reason it shouldn't be water tight, but you never know :-\.

I cleaned my engine bay trying to find the oil leak and this is the second Honda Civic that it’s happened to me the first one I had to change the cables and now I’m pretty sure I did something to the distributor
@JonesDieselPerforman12 жыл бұрын
Dielectric (silicone based) grease works better for corrosion prevention with respect to electrical connections.Wd 40 will 'displace' the water from your distributor quite effectively. WD 40 was actually the 40th formula that the manufacturer came up with to displace water, hence the name.It has hundreds of uses and is a very versatile product.

I had that happen to me at the car wash . I owned a cadilac eldordo 1987 . I was cleaning the engine and I had got the hei coil wet . It would not start . I had to remove the coil and dry it with a hair dryer . But the coil went out two weeks latter in MN on me . Had to pay 225 dollars to fix .
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
I've found if you've got something that's about to fail anyway, power washing will finish it off. Bad wires? Bad coil? Bad alternator with brushes making contact by dust? Power washing will remove that dust. You might power wash something 2 weeks before a trip just to bring an issue to the surface. Long road trips work the same way to uncover dormant problems that are due for some attention.

If a coil is on it's deathbed, power washing can make it fail while wet. Best just replace it. Water is often used in a spray bottle on components that are suspect for a misfire. (worn out)

question to all the engine washers out there. why do you feel the need to wash an engine?
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
Oil and dirt contribute to the degradation of the rubber, plastics, and ignition wires in your engine bay. Get it off of there it will last longer. When oil seals on a valve cover fail and oil gets on the plug wire or coil boots, it makes them swell and fail quickly. When dirt and dust accumulate on spark plug wires or radiator hoses, it dries them out faster causing cracks and leaks. If you have any kind of leak, dirt and dust will hold and spread the oil- then the oil holds more dirt and so on till you won't know where the leak is from, oil holds in heat and further exacerbates the failure.

2.9? Little? Seriously? I don't want to keep beating a dead horse here, but what is up with you guys and big ass engines? Also, I want to give you credit for something you told me some time ago: it's about push-starting and EFI car. I said you can't(tried and failed), you said it is possible. The day before yesterday I saw some guys push-start a Ford Street Ka(EFI engine, not carburetor) and it started in just a few meters. Like wow. Yeah.... Don't spray water on your engine electrics, m'kay?
@briansmobile16 жыл бұрын
The 2.9L naturally aspirated and non-interferance low output engine on a truck that tows a boat or camper (caravan) is woefully underpowered to climb the canyons and mountains found in the U.S. Also, petrol is insanely cheap here. It's about a Euro for two or three liters. Glad to help. I've got a lot of experience there ; D. I'll keep spraying like every car dealer does. Most cars in the world have been power washed either by hitting a puddle on the freeway, or by a powerwasher.
