Bro, if you're living at a hotel, the hotel will do the registration for you. However, if you're living at private residency like someone's apartment. You'll need to take the redbook or house deed or rental contract down to the police station.

Yes, temporary driver licence is actually very easy, fast to get in China(1-2 day including the translation of original driver license), I helped one friend to get it in Chongqing, and its valid for 1 year, although my friend just hold a tourist visa.

Provisional license in the west in Europe won’t be a temp driving license. If you don’t have a full license you can’t drive a car. Only provisional license you can use scooter if you have paperwork for it depending on where you visit in the eu

I would probably do something similiar to what you guys did but with Xian, Chengdu, Chongqing, Zhangjiajie. Other cool roadtrips could be something like Xiamen, Canton, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Macau or going around in Xinjiang since it's so big

One important thing about getting a temporary license is that you can only drive rental cars and not personal cars

You are right that fine is arbitrary, same thing happened to my tenant few years ago, the lady helped him just laughed it off. Probably its been enforced more strictly in ShangHai but really no big deal. Enjoy your trip to Chongqing!

Yes! Exactly what I did! That’s why it’s the provisional license and not the full one.

There are agencies that can help you to convert your foreign licence to a Chinease one. You still need to go through the computer exam and follow the full process. However, the agent knows the process well and will guide you through each step, navigating between different counters on different floors of the center. This makes it much easier for a foreigner who can't speak Chinese. You can use the address they provide for you, which is mandatory.

As China is not looking for immigrants, it's not that easy. As he has proven himself during the 30day visa's, he may get 90visas and then have to do visa-runs 4 times a year. Maybe even could get the max 180day visa's if Water is officially his fiancée
