Very late to this video... but thanks for uploading a video with regards to being in front of the leg. I've been retraining OTTBs for the past 11 years and for the first time ever I have one that is soooooo reluctant to move forward. Leg means nothing to him and when I tap him with the whip he will kick out or buck same if I use the spur (whether I use it lightly or sharply), he has been checked out by all the necessary, everyone keeps saying something must be causing pain, too which I roll my eyes already because he is healthy and I've even tried high energy feed, Saddle fits, back is fine, teeth are fine, no pain he is just a proper lazy type. Even when someone else rides he just doesn't want to go, even when he raced he ran one race and he also wouldn't go, even when lunging he is super lazy. Once lockdown here in South Africa is over and I can go ride again I will try again with the transitions etc maybe I can get more go out of him this time round. If you have any other tips I would really appreciate it? I should add I do eventing, so 'go' is a requirement hahahah I'm used to having to calm them down not rev them up.... Lol out of my comfort zone with a lazy horse. He is really talented though so I'd like to stick it out with him. And just a thanks for all your videos, I appreciate them all. I love how real you are and being someone that suffers from anxiety myself and I tend to doubt myself for no reason, I find your stories and advise really inspiring and helpfull!!

take him on the lunge, pressure and release, ask for forward until he goes forward then release, dont nag, if you feel him slowing down or coming back to the walk get after him again, and just repeat this until he can go forwards without constant nagging. transitions are so so so important.

basically ask him for forward until he makes a a small effort and release, then repeat. if you're riding ask with your leg lightly and give him a minute to move forward, if he doesn't, give him a little kick, if he still doesn't big kick, then back it up with a spur or whip. the important thing is is DO NOT give him a release until he moves forward. if he bucks or kicks out, DO NOT RELEASE. this will teach him that if he bucks he doesn't have to do work.

Thank you for nice tips! Yet, it would be useful to understand the stage of the training. Meaning that the horse should be in front of the legs at the very beginning while warming up at walk with long reins. What we do then? Thank you
