Thank you, I've been doing this for about a week there have been tremendous impact on my 12 year old. He was raised by young guys who are still athletic enough to mount a moving object. Two things he is 17 hands and I'm 65 years old. So getting him to trust and relax is the program, and I'm in no hurry seeing how we will be riding on the trails and many times I will need to get off and back on. Your insights are very helpful.

My horse and i were going round, and round he has previously been a serious rearing horse. A few days ago it took 20 minutes to get on safely.Today it worked in less than five minutes I was impressed. I mounted, dismounted then I rode him for two minutes then i put him away. Thank you so much🌻🐎🐎

Thank you so much! I've been trying to use the move their feet approach, but this helps the horse understand so much better!!!

These 3 minute videos are a great idea. I guess the natural follow up to the horse moving off as you mount is the horse moving off without being asked after you mount. Maybe a 3 minute video on that topic? You know we'll be trying this method out immediately! lol

Worked like a charm - I think the reward of just walking away and getting out of his space was the piece I had been missing. He was standing still like a champ after just a few minutes of practice!

Thank you so much for this video. I tried this technique with my horse today and it works. She would step away ever time i tried to mount up but by the end of my lesson she was standing perfectly still. And it only took me about 30 minutes.

I tried this with my mare for 45 minutes today, felt like we were getting somewhere - but it’s a battle of wills for sure! Thanks so much 😊

I applied this training yesterday and it was magic, and proved to be a real safety skill. I had just put on a new saddle and pad. I did the training until she didn’t try to follow me, and I could put my first foot in stirrup without even a flinch. Well, I advanced to pushing up to mount and the saddle slid over her side and under her belly! 🙈🐴 She didn’t move an inch. She stood respectfully while I removed the saddle and gave me that “ are we done for today?” Look! I felt that was a true test if your training philosophy and I thank you ! 😎

Thank you for your educational post. My horse tended to run away quickly when I got on. So I would like to hold the reins firmly, but if I do, he will step away when I stand on the stool. Is it not possible with this technique to immediately hold the reins? greetings from the Netherlands

if your horse is trained to stand still you don't need to, if I shorten my reins as I get on my horse backs up whereas if I don't touch the reins it just stands there

I ride my friends horse who has been taught that he can get away with stuff. He bites and side kicks when someone tries to get on him. He is huge so a mounting block is the only way to get on him. What is something that could be done to prevent him from spinning, nipping or kicking?

Would you not rather want the horse to want you be close to them? For me, it does not feel right to at all ride a horse that find it rewarding if I leave - then the horse actually do not want me there...

My horse is smarter. She moves towards me and shoves me off the mounting-block in a "sliiiiightly" sour way.

Hey PJ! 2 things, though you have to get down to reset the key is getting back up there and as soon as the horse is still, getting down and walking away. Remember that you walking away is the release and any kind of being by the saddle in anticipation to get on is the pressure. When that pressure means nothing to the horse and they stand still, walk away. Second, there are many ways to teach your horse to stand there, this isn't always the easiest, but is a very thorough and long term solution to this issue. Let me know if you continue to have trouble!

@@ScottPurdum I saddled my horse this morning and did what you suggested. Did not mount and worked for about 20 minutes. He stood good when walking away or around him. Was able to put one foot on bottom step and walk away. Also got one foot just on top step with good results. Praised horse each time he was still. He only stepped away the first time I put foot on bottom step. He turns to see me when I'm behind step. Will try more this week. Thnx!

Have been doing the approach and retreat and mounting block 3 to 4 times last week and 2 times this week so far. It takes like 20 minutes a lesson. Horse still moves away when putting foot on block. He stands good with block next to him. I have mounted 3 times, 3 days we actually rode, and was able to get on after 20 minutes and he will stand after mounting until asked to move off. I must be doing it wrong. Lol I could get on from ground if he stood still. He is 13.3 and I'm 4 ft 9. And a senior. If he is held then no issues. My other horse learned that much quicker several yrs ago. Any other suggestions?
