Hi there, If you’re trying it for the first time I’d recommend a 14” trowel. It’s also worth having a straight edge about 3-4 feet long which can use to rule off the render that you have just spread on to show up any low or high spots in the render.

Hi. interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Was this render going onto thermalite blocks? If yes, how do you get the time to spread it on the wall without the blocks sucking the moisture out as soon as it touches the wall? And, are you saying you don't need to use waterproofer in the 1st or 2nd coat?
@SkillBuilder4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lee When rendering onto Thermalites you always need to apply a slurry of cement and SBR with a little bit of sand thrown in. You could use Rendaide as an alternative. You need a good key and a suction killer and these products do both. There is no need to use waterproofer, it locks moisture in. The reason plasterers use it is to give them more working time.

It is difficult to diguise a day joint. When the sun shines you will see it. Most plasterers get some help so they can get the whole elevation done in a day

Nice work Buddy Only thing is the customer must be prepared to pay loads more for the sbr coating and the render meshing All good if they want it done properly But Just to apply the sbr by brush is a job in itself it ruins clothing driveways and anything it touches Its also expensive and to be quite honest it seals the blocks surface as it’s waterproof You are meant to apply your render over it whilst it’s still wet and this is very time consuming and stops you getting into a rhythm By using the mesh you are sandwiching the render on that’s the only reason that your scratch coat will hang on to the dried sbr , the small cement Particles mixed in with the Sbr are barley dust the render will not key to this unless it is still wet I use rendermesh on internal plastering that needs reinforcing , cracks etc and I always skim on tacky pva adhesive after I have first applied a sealing coat the previous day Render mesh is great but also slows the entire process down your infact putting 2 scratch coats on and cutting all of the mesh Loads more money !!!! I read Books and have been A Plasterer for 37 years I’m not a Jack of all trades I’m a specialist in this field Good vid though

So will the door meet building regs spec for energy efficiency? (Sorry can’t remember what part letter it’s in)
@jimichip4 жыл бұрын
No Skills it doesn’t, but weirdly our building control officer doesn’t seem too bothered about anything, just random stuff like doubling up the hip rafter and additional locks on windows and doors!?! It’s good in some ways as we know what we’re doing and can just get on with it but worrying in others as he could let some proper dodgy stuff go on other builds. This is a door and frame chosen and bought by the client, it’s their house and their choice so they are lucky to have the BCO that has been assigned to the job. P.s I think it’s part L.
@graememaguire6924 жыл бұрын
Part L, is correct, and new controlled fittings (windows n door) should provide the correct U-value. Even if he signs it off, it don't comply and might get questions if they sell the house. 🤔

scratch coat is so nice, that you could do the finish coat the same and I would be happy

The reason we put waterproofer in the scratch coat is to stop the suction so you can get a decent amount of top coat before you pebble dash.When rendering in just sand and cement I wouldn’t put a waterproofer in any coat,especially the scratch coat unless you wanted to hang around all day to rub up

What are breeze blocks?
@SkillBuilder4 жыл бұрын
It is a bit of an archaic term now but still comes up high in the search rankings. It is really a building block with air in it. They used to be made from flyash from power stations and cement. The problem is they were quite acidic and corroded the wall ties. The new variant is an aircrete block made by Thermalite and Celcon, to name but two. This involves throwing a handful of zinc filings into a mix sloppy mix of cement and sand. The zinc reacts with the cement and causes bubbles like in an aero chocolate bar and this produces a lightweight block with very good insulation values.

It was a genuine mistake, that part of the building was built on an existing foundation but I took one course of bricks out too many when I took the old building down. However, it has actually been a blessing in disguise, we have only filled in the outer skin on top of the door frame and as it is an inwards opening door it has left a perfect recess for a roller blind which won’t interfere with the door opening.
