How to gild an Icon

My iconography course painting-the-light.teachable....
In this video I try to eplain as much as I can the confusing technique of gilding decorative patterns on paint. There is hardly any information on this process and Im positive many iconogrphers will find this helful. I give two tips for really perfect Chrisokondylies as they are called. Thank you very much for sharing! I used to put shellack on proplasmos , then talc so the glue doesn’t attach on proplasmos where we dont’t want, and use mixion 3h . But the result wasn’t good, and my proplasmos often is too light 😩 i’ll try next time your technic! For proplasmos what colours of pigment do you use, yellow ochre+red ochre, wich proportions ?

Could you please, please make more videos on Chrisokondylies :) There are so many problems related to this technique: how to see what we paint (the lines are almost invisible, how to correct mistakes (is it possible?), uneven surface when making changes, correction, etc.... (thanks for all the great videos!)

Hello thank you for the amazing video and Χριστός Ανέστη. Na έχεις πάντα υγεία και χαρά. I have a question. I am a beginner and am starting with acrylic paints and metallic gold leaf, how can I make such fine lines with the gold leaf when the sizing glue for metallic leaf is often so thick/sticky? Is it the brush or the glue that can make a difference?

Ευχαριστούμε πολύ!! Νομίζω πως ήρθε την κατάλληλη στιγμή... σκεφτόμουν εδώ και καιρό να το τολμήσω και με γλιτώσατε από πιθανά λάθη. Αυτό που μου κάνει εντύπωση είναι πως ρέει η μιξιόν αδιάλυτη... μια φορά που δεν είχα προσθέσει αρκετό νερό έγινε σαν τσίχλα και φυσικά το αποτέλεσμα ήταν οικτρό... και πάλι ευχαριστώ θερμά!!

Το πείραμα στέφθηκε με επιτυχία!! Το μόνο που με απασχολεί,αν είναι σωστή η αναλογία νερού και αυγού που χρησιμοποίησα (έγινε με το μάτι) ώστε όταν έρθει η ώρα του βερνικιού να μην μου κατεβάσει το χρώμα...

How do you protect the gilding before switching to tempera?

Do you put any protective layer over the gold assist before you continue painting the remainder of the icon? Such as shellac or spar-varnish.

We used in church mural painting aply shellac wherever was golden leaf, for protection. For scratches. Guess it s the same in small icons

Πολυ ωραιο βιντεο διαφωτιστικο! Ηθελα να ρωτησω οταν τελειωσουν οι χρυσοκονδυλιες μετα απο ποση ωρα βερνικωνεις οταν τελειωσεις ολο το εργο ή τοπικα και μετα ολοκληρο; Επισης το βερνικι που θα χρησιμοποιησεις ειναι νερου για τεμπερα ή γομαλάκα; Ειχα χρυσωσει ολοκληρη εικονα (το φοντο αφου πρωτα ειχα περασει αυγοτεμπερα χονδροκοκκινο ) με μιξιον νερου και μετα εσκασε ολο το χρυσο το ειχα αραιωσει με νερο και δεν στεγνωνε με τιποτε κολλούσε για μια ζωη😂😂! Καλη συνεχεια!

Eγω βερνικωνω στο τελος ολη την εικονα. προσπαθω μετα απο κανα εξαμηνο να βερνικωνω. Το κανω με ενα βερνικι σε σπρευ και ειναι πολυ ευκολο και ασφαλες

What type of glue do you use for the gold lines? And can we add a small amount of light colour to the glue to be able to see our progress?

I would love to know the brand. I tried one, but it is thick, so the brush strokes under the gold are too defined.

OK, I tried this for the first time the other day - painted then when the paint was dry and "set" over night, I painted the gilding size with a fine brush, and the leaf stuck to the paint next to the size as much as it did to the size. I had to scrape it off the paint, being careful to leave it on the size lines.

Sorry to hear that Hilary.... Did you make sure not to tamper the color with a lot of egg emulsion as I suggest on the video? The powdered pigments should be liquified with a less egg-more water solution to avoid gold stick on color

Hello. Can you give a rough proportion of water / egg in your special proplasmos preparation? And what brand of water mordant are you using for your lines?

Maybe 1/5 of pigment is egg. Normally is 1/2. I ll check what the brand is and I'll let you know. Its not something expensive or fancy though... let me know. if it worked for you!

Αν έχεις την καλοσύνη μια διευκρίνιση σχετικά με την αναλογία... στο βίντεο αν κατάλαβα καλά λες μια δύο σταγόνες αυγό και περισσότερο νερό. Με την απάντησή σου αυτή λίγο μπερδεύτηκα... κανονικά στην αυγοτέμπερα προσθέτουμε και νερό; Προσωπικά αναμειγνύω ίση ποσότητα κρόκου με λευκό κρασί ή ξύδι. Όταν θα κάνω προπλασμο που θα δεχθεί χρυσοκονδυλιές πόσο νερό να προσθέσω;

@@eleftheriasidera4838 εγω κανω διαφορετικα την αυγοτεμπερα. οσο κροκο τοσο νερό και μερικες σταγονες ξύδι. οταν προκειται να κανω χρυσοκοντυλια η αναλογια νερού προς κροκο ανεβαινει. Ισως 3 νερο 1 κροκος. Ισως κ 4 προς 1. :)
