Although I couldn't confirm on my game, twitter user OS_splat said they can also cause this glitch by turning 'Colour Lock' on and off.

MY DUDES, IT IS NOT PATCHED. IT'S A RAM OVERLOAD. You can't patch a ram overload. Let me explain. Every time you enter the "friends" menu, the game adds a little more ram. If you exit, the game won't delete the ram. Then when you enter again, it will add even MORE ram. Do that a lot of times and there will be what we call a ram overload, too much ram loaded at the same time to make it simple. Therefore the game wasn't programmed to handle a such overload. It's gonna start to "panic", which causes those flashy colors and strange textures. When you exit the game, NOW the system can delete all ram and put it back to normal when you enter the game again. There you go, now you know how it works. Thank me later, have fun with your ram overload. ;)

it can be easily patched by updating the game to garbage collect ram after exiting the friends list menu.

Go to home screen, then to your icon in the top left corner, then to "Add friend" and there is an option that reads "Last played with" or something like that. My Switch is not in English, so I don't know the exact words. Once they accept your friend request you should see their icons in the game, granting you the ability to do the glitch

If you go into octo valley you can swim in the octolings ink. I’ve only got this to happen once but seriously lol You can swim in certain areas with no ink at all
