I'm working on my first hidden tang, and no videos I've seen talk about cleaning the Vaseline out after bedding, as I've been wondering about. Thanks for the info. Love your work!
@DonNguyenKnives3 жыл бұрын
One thing we've also changed since doing this video is using wax instead of vaseline. Vaseline WORKS, but is a little too goopy and can cause problems. I had a handle that got too stuck and had to scrap it. Wax on the other handle can be applied to a thin, cleaner layer, and is just more consistent. I've been trying out axe wax and it works well but I think some others use ren wax - same idea, just different thing.

Ya'll boys are funny as shit! Its so funny to see what we do the same and things that are different. In my experience I have seen many full tang knives show back up from glue failure mostly due to putting the knives in the dishwasher (more than once), I've only seen one hidden tang return and that was my sister, who washes all of her knives regardless of me telling her not to do that a thousand times. Bolsters, are also a major bitch to get dialed perfect on full tang blades. Awesome video Don!!! Thanks Sam. -z

hidden tang for kitchen knives, full tang for choppers. can get away with hidden tang for light choppers, smaller camp knives but depends on wood strength, length of the tang. cliff stamp has a good video on japanese machete where hidden tang failed - although only under extreme use.
@DonNguyenKnives4 жыл бұрын
A well designed and executed hidden tang I think has potential to be even stronger than full, but that's debatable for sure. Having no holes for pins can keep strength at a maximum
@evanhorne72324 жыл бұрын
Lovin the vids man! Been #fulltanggang but I can see how hidden tang would allow for more design freedom. I've watched most of your videos but do you have one of full walk thru on hidden tang? Got two smaller knives cut out for hidden tang but Im hesitant on doing them

Did you ever have any issues with hydrolock when inserting the tang ? It always seems to be a pain in my arse. Great video don , Cheers.
@DonNguyenKnives4 жыл бұрын
Are you hydrolocking it to the point where it's bending the tang????! I haven't noticed it on mine. Pressing it in will just squeeze out the epoxy and then I clamp to get it tight. Haven't noticed any crazy pressure issues or anything
@wiaknives4 жыл бұрын
@@DonNguyenKnives interesting, maybe i'm trying to make the tang hole too tight cause when i go to push the last inch in (haha) the pressure just pushes it back out. Or maybe i'm not putting enough epoxy in to reduce the air trapped in there. More testing needed i think. Cheers sir.
@CabinetFramingUK4 жыл бұрын
@@wiaknives could always file a thin groove running down either side of the tang to allow the excess epoxy to escape 👍

I saw a Japanese knife maker use hot glue to set his blades into his handles that makes them removable by putting them in an oven add 200° then being able to remove the handle what do you think I’m doing some test for myself I thought the key to Japanese life making was a removable handle ?? I’m trying to stick of half inch hot glue instead of the dowel method he says it gives you about two or three minutes to set the handle before it hardens
@DonNguyenKnives3 жыл бұрын
I dunno that sketches me out a little. Night never ever be a problem but to me that's not the type of elegant solution I personally would do. I'm definitely looking at ways to do a removable handle and the takedown approaches so far are the most appealing.

Is this a 30 minute epoxy? 5 minute epoxy doesn't allow for enough time to work with it in a more careful way.
@DonNguyenKnives3 жыл бұрын
It's a 24 epoxy, which starts setting up in about one hour. 5 minutes is WAY too short, and isn't great for strength and longevity down the road.
