Brother, you are a superb craftsman. The way you shaped the green rectangular shaped piece of wood into a comfortable extension that seamlessly blended into the antler is incredible. 👏👏

Two points if I may be so bold that were drummed into me as an apprentice (30 years ago)… lower the guide on your bandsaw so it’s as close to the workpiece as possible for accurate cuts and to limit blade damage. And, when leaning on your file, lift it (or lift up pressure) on your back stroke to limit the wear to maintain the tool. It only cuts forward. Love your videos. 🥳

I completely agree on your first point (lower your bandsaw guide), I personally disagree on your latter point. Both in my personal experience and in actual tests (check Fireball Tool) it appears that back cuts do little to no damage to a file's teeth, and actually do remove some material. In addition, back and forth passes are quicker and easier than lift cuts. Of course, I very well may be wrong in this and always love to learn more.

I believe it to be true, but it’s an issue with metal files, not wood working. The relative ‘hardness’ of wood and antler should do absolutely nothing to a file, except to assist with clearing the teeth.

Loved the simplicity of the video. Allowed the process to tell it's own story. Down to the detail of checking temp of guard to avoid over heating. Loved it! Oh and the knife is beautiful!

Nice work as usual. Like your swedge technique. I ground my first swedge today using a jig and gaurd and found symmetry a challenge. Thanks for sharing.

That was just a stone washing solution. I etch it and then stone wash it. It has aquarium rocks and WD40 in it.

When sanding back and forth like that, how do you avoid the fish-hook scratches?

Typically I go one direction on the last 20'ish passes.

I bring these up to 600 grit before etching. The handles go up to 600-800 grit then buff.

What kind of bandsaw blade are you using there? Mine seem to chip teeth a little to easily and then become a pain to cut with.

It's a Bauer from Harbor Freight and I use 14TPI Lennox blades

Any reason you didnt fill the back part of the handle with epoxy?

I did fill that part, sanded it, and buffed it. I used CA Glue instead of epoxy. It fills the pith way better than the epoxy does.

You need to slack belt sand the handle to finished. Skip all the sand paper, slow speed sanding drums, files, etc. Give it a try, you might like the time savings.

Never file the tang shoulders ,leave rounded if possible, it would be no problem to break that handle off the blade!!!

I had a tent set up when I was building my larger shop. I had to demo the small one that housed the forge, so that I could make the larger one. The tent was just a temp solution.
