Thanks Steve, excellent video! I always take a few photos of what I'm about to take apart/replace/rebuild with my camera for future reference, never fails, this 60+ year old mind can't remember like it used to.

Everybody these days has a phone with a camera just take pictures or take one side apart at a time good video well done Todd

Wow, seems like a pretty in depth job for what you might otherwise think is a quick easy repair.

According to GM you're supposed to torque the spindle nut to 52 ft lbs then back it off to 0 then finger tight.
@kdlittlehawk Жыл бұрын
thats what I was looking for , thanks ! You get people making DIY vids but leave out a critical step. And it's 60 ft lbs for those axle bolts too.

Loved the video - interesting. I've done drum brakes on cars before but this is a lot different - the hub assembly and removing the axle is not like a car - at all.
@slow_restoration5 жыл бұрын
It's definitely different when you get into heavy duty trucks. It's much more involved. Thanks

I’ve done this job years ago. Factor said new gasket only on axle flange. I installed and tightened to 60 ft lbs. the axle leaked next day. I ended up going to axle shop. I believe the only thing they did different was they put gasket sealant on the gasket and little on the bolts. This video skipped the axle install.

This was a very good video I'm getting ready to do rear pads on our dually and figured I'd look up a video just for shits and giggles and I saw your doing all the other parts too so I figured I'd go ahead and learn how to do everything for when that time comes

Thanks for watching! It's not a bad job to do, just a lot of disassembly.

Great video! Much harder job to replace the emergency brake backing plates, when usually rusted to death in Canada. I see you don't have that added issue!

Thanks, some times we do but this truck is pretty clean!

@@slow_restoration great video with the dually rear brakes. I'm having a heck of a time tracking down that rear seal on the spindle there. Do you have a part number or a link?

I was expecting to really be honest and straight about how to do this, there were a lot of missing information about the process. This videos made people believe that it's very simple, the omission of some size tools and hiden mess means a lot to me. Appreciated the information anyways..
@1kory8834 жыл бұрын
Did I miss something, did you pay him to train you how to do brakes on your truck? He's making a video to help people out that most likely are already mechanically inclined. If you can't fill in the missing pieces, or need to be told what size sockets you need, then you shouldn't be doing brakes jobs pal.

isn't there a torque spec for tightening the locking nut?

Thank you Sir.....I was pretty sure the axle had to come out and the wheel studs as well. E Brake Shoes suck to do on ANY vechile. It seems that if you dont use OEM shoes and hardware they never seem to seat right especially anything Mopar. I've got a 08 3500 to do Monday. We just did the Body Work and Im moving on to the Mechanical so I can pass for Pa State Inspection. I detect a Pittsburgh accent? It's a Torrington bearing? If correct does it have a part number? I looked them up & I see many different ones but I need the same one I'm guessing. I. Trying g to get everything I'm gonna need before starting so I'm not stuck with a truck on stands for more than half a day or so.

Can the parking break be adjusted with the rotor on the axle or does the rotor need to be removed to do this?
@slow_restoration4 жыл бұрын
You have to remove, at least on this one.

Very interesting, do all rear disc assemblies work with the combo. shoe/pad style, even on cars for the e-brake? Thanks Danny!
@slow_restoration5 жыл бұрын
Not all, but a lot do! Some use a mechanical system in the caliper to tighten the pads without hydraulic pressure.

How much can I expect this to cost total parts and labor for a 3500 dually front and rear? At a local shop.

Great Video! I'm researching lifts for myself and the atlas 2 post is on the top of my list. My heaviest truck is a 2500hd gasser with a 8ft utility bed full of tools, what size is your lift and how did it handle that dully. It looked solid when you were working on it.
@slow_restoration5 жыл бұрын
It's a 10,000 pound lift. It lifted the truck off the ground with no problem, it was a little slower to lift it if you started with weight already on it. This truck was close to 10,000 though, I don't think you would have any problems.
@cadillaccooke8113 жыл бұрын
My 04 2500hd with an 8ft reading bed, 2wd ext cab weighed in at 7700 pounds loaded with tools at the scales. There's no crane on my box, and no air compressor, point is this should get you close and a 10000 lift should work for yoh

What type of differencial fluid do you top it off with? Will synthetic mix ok with non synthetic? Maybe if in doubt I should just change that fluid all together? It probably needs to be done anyway. I was thinking about using valvoline 75/140 full synthetic for my 2006 3500 Express cutaway van with dually.
@slow_restoration4 жыл бұрын
Yeah if it's time to change it anyway it's good maintenance to drain and refill. Check with the store where you buy it, they should be able to tell you what is needed for your year and model. Thanks.

Question I have a 1973 chevy dually that has brake shoes and drums in the rear. I want to use brakes like this for a rear conversion. I don't know when chevy first switched over to dually rear disc brakes do you know the year..
@slow_restoration4 жыл бұрын
I think early 2000's.

My 1991 3500hd has rotors. There are only a few years in that year range where gm actually made a true HD that was different from all other 3500s. It was called a cab and chassis which was more like a 4500. Everything was different and most auto parts stores don't know how to look up parts for these trucks. But they are sought after cause they were built very heavy duty and used for strictly commercial type use, dump trucks, flatbed tow trucks, tow trucks, Etc. But they did have rotors on the rear!

Looks like a 2001-2007 by the fender and door. Either way the process is pretty much the same for 2001-2010 or so GM dually if I remember right.
