Hi friends!
Do you feel like it's really tough to get into attack mode during rolls? Or that you're having a tough time going from defensive to offensive? You're not alone!

Defense will ultimately create offense. When you have the defense skills to get yourself out of any tough situation, you'll fire off your offense without fear. It takes time but that's the goal

I needed to hear this 🙋🏻‍♀️ I feel like I’m so far behind everyone else (all guys and I’m the only white belt no stripe) that I’m just chasing my tail all the time.

I think is pretty normal to feel lost at the beginning, you should not worry. Jiu Jitsu is a long term relationship, youll see how long youve progressed in a near future. Dont you worry and keep being consistent. Oss

This was super helpful, thank you! I'm a 5'2 little blue belt and my coaches keep telling me I need to be more aggressive, haha.

As a 5ft. female, blue belt. I feel like I'm just now starting to be able to try submissions. As everyone I roll with, always men, is much larger and stronger than I am. Unfortunately I dont get to roll with other women often. But like you said! When you roll with someone better. They push you and make you better, even if you don't feel like it in the moment. I love your videos! Do you have any tips for staying tighter when holding someone in a position? I feel like there is a big jump in knowledge and skill between blue belt and purple. I've been a blue for a while now but still feel like I'm not near a purple level.

Every one's timeline is different too. I definitely didn't feel confident with submissions at white belt either. Thanks so much for watching!! Hm, it depends. What position are you having trouble with?

@@kimberlykinch honestly any top position, I feel like the guys can muscle their way out no matter how tight I am. But I do love a good deep half guard. I have been trying to work on sweeps from there. I feel like I need to focus more on sweeps before I focus on submissions.

My game - if it can be called that yet - is almost entirely defensive atm. 'I've become very adept at delaying the inevitable,' I said to my Sensei, eliciting much laughter in agreement. :)

LOL. This is hilarious. But I hear ya! Switching the script and starting to attack is super tough.

I found that, at the beginning, I was defensive for two reasons: 1. (the obvious) always fighting big guys! Not much can be done about this, and I learned a lot of great defense this way! It really pushed me. 2. My offense was not very successful, and going for attacks is so much riskier than holding off attacks. You go for an armbar, and then you fail, and end up in a worse position than before. So I would try to stay "safe" and "in control." But that won't last forever, trying to hold people off. I'm slowly realizing that training is where you get to take the risks and make the mistakes and its okay, because the roll re-sets at the end, and you get to try again and apply what you learned RIGHT AWAY. I've always been pretty aggressive, but as I try to get more offensive (and fail a lot) I'm having a lot more fun and finding that some things (like my passing game) really are improving!

defensive posture will get you killed. I gave up bjj and went into boxing and wrestling before coming back to bjj/grappling because the false security people get from the guard impedes progress in combat. Letting someone get on top of you is a death sentence; its always best to be attacking attacking attacking
@kimberlykinch

This is all true, but there are other reasons people train jiu jitsu other than just to avoid getting killed.. Learning to attack and how to attack technically takes time.
