As a rhythm guitarist, I wanted (and had) to play lead guitar, but I couldn't think as a lead guitarist. After searching a lot in KZbin for such lessons, I was frustrated because no one was explaining how to transition from rhythm to lead guitar. Thankfully, Jason was there for people like me and saved my ass while making lead guitar wayy easier

Yeah he has such an awesome touch! This is also why I admire Joe Satriani so much. He can do all of the fancy stuff but he refrains to let his notes breathe and sing, and then he'll throw in the fancy stuff now and then so that it has a greater impact!

I had that issue in my younger years. And I think a lot of it is the desire to play fast and sometimes we feel our solos are judged by how fast we play. Where that can be impressive, it also gets boring at a certain point (I had close friends tell me this back in the day and it resonated). Where as I still play fast, one of the things I like doing is create a simple melody with my leads. If someone can hum to it, that means it's memorable and that's what you want. Mix that in with the fast stuff and you've got an amazing formula for guitar solos.

Its totally like ypur talking about. Younger i learned to play fast and everything was about how fast i can go. And the older i get its about how i can make the song sound better. And i believe every musician comes to that cross roads at some point. I always tell people you can tell when a musician plays from the heart or just playing notes

That's absolutely true! I think too many guitarists focus too much on playing fast solos but the rhythms are the heart of the music, especially metal

Great lesson......there was a time when most music lovers stepped far away from shred guitar, playing 1000 notes per minute, because it meant nothing...music is intent is to make you feel something, its beautiful notes have to move you....not like theres a mosquito buzzing around your ears..
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 3 жыл бұрын
LOL...dude, I love that analogy, and it really can't be said any better! Over-shredding is just showing out and it only appeals to other guitar players. But you want your music to be more powerful than that, and like you said, those notes have to make them feel something.

I wonder if I am the only one who holds the pick differently when playing rhythm and lead. I roll my fingers often as I have small hands and it helps to play some arpeggios that many people sweep

Dude I've been playing for a little over 30 years, i know a little bit of theory, I know a couple scales and how to connect the scales, but for the most part I play like you, mostly through feel. I play metal, blues, I really like hendrix and page, and of course, old metallica, Slayer and old megadeth. I've watched a lot of videos on how to make myself better (I've been in a rut lately) and I stumbled upon your videos. YOU ARE PROBABLY THE BEST GUITAR TEACHER ON KZbin. Just the simple things you're showing us is totally teaching me a few things. You are a wicked player and you should be very proud of yourself. Thanks for these videos.

My problem with playing at the moment is standing up. When I sit down I hold it in pretty much the same position as you, but I haven't got as much control when I stand up with the strap. I have tried a longer strap, and I have tried a shorter strap, but I still don't have as much control

Hey Jason, another great video. I have a suggestion for another video that can piggy back off this one. As an intermediate metal rhythm player who’s trying to learn how to solo theres one thing I struggle with. If I come up with a cool little riff and want to transition into a solo, I have trouble knowing what key I’m in and what scales to play my solo in. Should I play A minor pentatonics, E minor, etc? I usually play a small solo in different keys until it starts to line up and sound good. So I eventually get there but it takes a lot of trial and error until I do. Can you help me, or anyone else who may struggle like me, understand where to go from riff to solo? Thanks in advance bro. Loving the content as always...

Are you using a compresser pedal to get more sustain from that double bend? Any recommendations for one?
@jasonstallworth
@jasonstallworth 3 жыл бұрын
Nope, I'm just using the amp and the noise gate. I'm also sitting pretty close to the amp, plus it's a tube (EVH 5150 III) so you get plenty of natural sustain, even with passive pickups!
