WOW, I was at Walmart to return some things and then walked around putting several things into my cart. You, Dawn and Dana have influenced me to the point that I put the things back where I got them and left empty handed. THANKS TO YOU ALL!!! I then stopped at Dollar Tree and found all kinds of things that went into my cart. Then I proceeded to take most of them back and only spent a little over $20. That is below my average and I have made way fewer trips! THANKS AGAIN!!! I love this video and the way you talk to us. You are so real with us!!

If you put more turkey on your plate, you will probably get filled up on one plate. We didn’t have stuffing at Christmas & I felt great. I don’t see any problem with eating desserts on Christmas unless you have high blood sugar or insulin resistance, pre diabetes. Then you should be careful & eat more cheese & nuts. It’s one day! Enjoy it!

@laurengarcia9. You can do it! Cass and Dawn and others (including YOU!) are great inspiration. It has taken me an UNBELIEVABLE time to get things out of my bedroom and into place or donate. Strangely “One in, one out!” finally worked for me yesterday. I love pretty bed linens and even have one favorite set from 1972. I still enjoy using them. Meanwhile I was running out of room in linen closet, so there were unfolded sheets and clothes living on my bedroom floor. 😱 But I couldn’t seem to cull some of the bedding and clothes. It just depressed me and got worse and worse. I also felt like my bedroom needed to be changed and made beautiful once again. (thank you Cass) so I would enjoy being in there again. Anyway, the other day I ordered a delightful boho-ish comforter with lots of red and turquoise. Oh, la, la! Just making my bed with it brightened the whole room. (It’s the first time in a long time that I have done that) Anyway, my new “one in” stimulated me to donate a lot of other bedding that I knew I wouldn’t be using with the new look. I picked out the ones that weren’t favorites anymore and embraced the rest. Now there is room in the linen closet (and yes, I still have my ‘70s sheets in there) and I folded and put away everything I wanted to keep and donated several bags of clothes and bedding. It only took me over a year to get started. Now I am working on getting rid of excess furniture I really don’t care about any more. Cass and her daughter rearranging daughter’s bedroom has given me ideas, too. So, Lauren, I can only say, good luck and enjoy 2024. 🎉

Hubby & I sat down a few wks ago & wrote our gift list out. We decided to do cash for everyone & then we ook a few names off the list & decided to do baked goods & a candle for our neighbors to save $$$. I have an alarm on my phone that goes off every day to think of things I'm thankful for. I've lost 50 lbs this past yr & I want to keep it off during the holidays. This will be the hardest thing for me, but I'm determined to be careful this yr & I'm already putting things in place to be careful what I eat daily. Great video, Cas. 😊

About a year ago, I set up my new apartment and spent a ton of money but, but, buying (new Tupperware, new lazy Susans for organizing my kitchen cabinets, new trash kitchen bin and minis for each living, bed & bathroom, new side tables for living room, new COUCH and new mattress with nice (expensive) new bed frame that I absolutely love!!!!! (Built-in drawers for my book collection & I drawer allocated for my yoga stuff) :). I'm sure there was even more expense too (I hadn't spent anything in soooo many years that pretty much everything was super old so only furniture moved with me was my bedside table, pretty much!) All that expense, I intentionally put other things off, like new workout clothes and cute tops/updating my wardrobe, plus my sheets are actually not matching fitted to flat and the flat sheet doesn't even fit my bed. I have been wanting new sheet set for almost an entire year now so I wouldn't be 'short sheeted' lol (sideways at least) 😅😅😅 And a few weeks ago I bought 5 new shirts on sale! And just yesterday found a GREAT sale on a sheet set!!! How's that for intentional shopping!!! BUT, I'll b the first to admit that I don't have the best intentional shopping in Amazon, soooo, I made it a rule for myself that I am allowed to "shop" now, but I'm NOT allowed to "check out" what I just put into my cart that same session. Now my rule for myself is, (UNLESS it's a very specific item that I have been wanting/looking for for a while, like new sheets) otherwise I don't allow myself to 'checkout my cart' for at least a FULL DAY/SLEEP ON IT! But usually it's more like 2-3 days before I log back into my Amazon again and see what I can delete before checking out my cart that I do actually need:)
@sonyad7723
@sonyad7723 Жыл бұрын
Ps: I forgot to mention that by using this method (of not 'checking out my cart immediately for a day/sleep on it... See bottom of my post for details) I almost ALWAYS delete something (usually more than one something too!!!) before checking out my cart!!! It really WORKS to stop those impulsive buys!!!

I am just so thankful I have my home, as money is very tight. I am now a pensioner, and live alone with my dog, so you would think that I did not spend much, but am still finding it a struggle. I love my little house, and just hope that I can stay here, as I own it, so it is very special. But I am a butterfly, and the place just has too much stuff in it! Trying to sell things on the free website we have for Hatherleigh, the smallest town in Devon, England, but even at rock bottom prices, things are taking ages to sell! I do not go out into the world, so can not sell things on ebay, as I can not get to a post office to post them. But I am working on it, and that is all we can do. As you said, try and stay true to ourselves, but try to make ourselves better people. When I do meet another human being, which is not very often, I will always be happy to see them, and hope to make them feel better through seeing me too. If I can make someone's day, then that makes me happy. Someone saying something nice to me, makes my day too. xxx

I love this!!! I have found that if I make it my mindset of deciding ahead of time, this helps so much when I am faced with hard choices under temptation and pressure. I can then choose to follow my already made decision and it helps me stay focused on my goals! This works in all areas of working on goals. Decide first, before faced with choices.

😃❤✍34:46 YES to the power of journaling about gratitude and what you did *right* that day!!! I thought this was woo-woo until I learned that it trains the brain to look for the good things. I tried it and it works!!! 🤩I recently found out meditation works similarly---training the brain to let go of negative thoughts more easily.* That actually made me *want* to try it for the first time. ; - D *Source = this inspiring video: *'How I rewired my brain in six weeks' - BBC News* They can *see* in fMRI imaging that meditation actually increases the size of the part of the brain that controls mind wandering (which I'm hoping will help with my ADHD!), and can even shrink the amygdala, which gets bigger with chronic stress! Huzzah! 😃

One of the things I do to prevent overeating at get togethers during the holidays is stay away from the food and dessert tables. My husband loves all kinds of food and has been struggling with his weight since we got married 30+ years ago. So he takes a seat with family or friends and I go peruse the food tables. I put a small amount of all the foods I know he likes and take it to him to eat. I include anything new that he’s never had. He does the same for me. Of course, he can go back and a get second helping. But, with us, we know we’ve already eaten all of our favorites, albeit in small portions, so we don’t feel deprived of the food we like. That makes it easier not to go back. Whereas, if he got his own food from the food table, he’d load his plate until it was overflowing. He has a problem with portion control. He hasn’t had any of these foods since the last holiday and he wants to make sure he gets enough. The problem is, he doesn’t stop eating when he’s full. He’s a member of the “clean plate club”, and he takes that membership very seriously! Afterward he’s miserable because he ate too much. Our plan doesn’t always mean he won’t go back for seconds, but, for some reason, he just gets a little bit. He doesn’t overload his plate again. That’s something he started completely on his own! There’s an added benefit from getting each other’s food, and that is how all of his friends say how lucky he is to be married me. They say it’s because they see me do things for him that others don’t do. And it goes both ways. All of my friends are jealous that I have a “man like that”! The truth is, he does spoil me! I’m well aware of how lucky I am!

Cass - this was so practical and encouraging! If I am honest, a big part of me dreads the Christmas season. I think I have some PTSD because as a music teacher and wife to a minister, my Nov/Dec schedule was always overwhelming! I have retired from teaching but still struggle with some fear/resentment of the demands of this season. So here are my goals for the season: kindness to myself and others, focus on Christ, and say no when I need to in order to say yes to more joy and peace!

Before making even small purchases, I have to ask the question “if I spent money on this, will it prevent me from spending money on something I need or want more?” And if it’s something super cheap, I have to ask the same question but considering how lots of small purchases collectively could add up to preventing me from having what I really need or want that is of better value.

I already printed your check list for Christmas and filled out the things that I needed to do or buy, etc. When it came to what movies I wanted to watch, I went crazy, looking up ones that I wanted to see. This was so useful for me. In years past I would go through the whole season and realized that I did not take the time for myself and watch a single one. I am very well organized in so many ways, trained by the experts, but taking time for myself did not fit in. My apartment is organized, my drawers, under the sinks, my closet, my to do list….. all organized. You trained me well. I even had a vision board, and just now realized that I actually accomplished the things on it. I think I will give some thought to making a new one. At the end of each day I check my to do list and make adjustments. It keeps me in control. If you ever wonder if anyone really listens, or benefits from your podcasts and KZbin, be assured. You have been life changing for me. Thank you.

I dread the holidays every year because I’m surrounded by people who overindulge all the time (food) and make less than productive remarks to me and my husband about our choices. I’m so glad your situation has improved. And your right it’s very hard to not want to overindulge. I was never homeless but after my parents divorced my mom had a very limited budget. And she would treat us to some goodies on grocery day. She would tell us you guys eat everything in one day! 😮 But I think our self consciousness told us the same thing, eat it now because next week there will be none. As an adult it’s very hard not to have the same mindset. And even more not want to overbuy food and stuff because we’re still self consciously thinking our situation might change tomorrow. I still hate wasting food but I’m not great at meal planning and I’m living in a cluttered home because when I bring in something new it’s hard to let something else go. Because as a child/young adult I went without. So hard to do the work on ourselves but we have to in order to live a better life.😅

You inspired me to right down 3 goals/values and a bunch of steps under each on how I can achieve them. I put my list where I can see it every day. One of my goals is decluttering my books so I counted them (220) and want to have only 100 for a downsizing move in the future. My shorter term goal is to fill a box and donate them to the Friends of the Library’s Christmas book sale by Dec 1. I was doing well with this goal as I started the year with 350 but I had stalled out by last summer. Time to get back to serious decluttering of books and craft supplies.

As you talked about holiday eating, I could see my Thanksgiving plate in front of me. Then, I saw my Christmas plate in front of me. Lately, I have spent the holidays with my daughter and family, so some of those dishes like mustard greens and red cabbage aren't part of the holiday plate. I'm going to make these dishes for me, divide them in portions, and spread it out over a week or so. I love to bake, so I'm going to. But, I'll share them with friends and neighbors so they are not just for me. When my kids were little, I would put away 20 dollars every paycheck for Christmas. This could be for gifts, food, or baked goods. In short, it would make the holiday cost a lot less.

Mustard greens and red cabbage sounds delicious!!! I started always bringing a healthy and delicious vegetable dish to potlucks even though I'm a sugar fiend because I need that balance too. And people always eat it! When I stayed with a friend and her family for several days over Christmas one year I started feeling cruddy from all the rich food and sugar. When I casually asked if anyone else would like some Brussel sprouts I was making the chorus of enthusiastic YESes shocked me! ; - D I think sometimes people crave veggies without realizing it. 😃❤🥬🥦 Props to you for saving for Christmas all year when your kids were little. If we give ourselves permission the question becomes 'do I really want this?' rather than 'how much can I have?' There's a book by Lyndi Cohen 'weightloss is not the problem' it is amazing please read. If you don't like books she does videos but the book is my absolute favourite.

I think some people find it easier to be intentional because they don't have so many thoughts running through their head at one time. When I'm in creative mode, I just can't slow down. I want to do everything all at once. So, I think it has something to do with how your brain is naturally wired. I don't know, but that's what I think. I have a handle on the shopping and financial side of things, I rarely make an impulse buy but I do have a problem overindulging with delicious desserts around the holidays, I too crave sugar - I've found that I can't have a "small" portion, I actually do better if I just skip the dessert.

I was just thinking about how to-do lists and setting money aside waaaaay before the holidays is real-life non-woo woo intentionality. I was going to do Christmas in July, where I bought all our gifts in July….Well, it’s September 😂 but I am still going to get gift shopping done before November. And I know we’re not going to buy decorations so that just leaves food and gas money to visit with family. Just writing that much down lifted a bit of stress! Another great podcast. Thank you!

ANOTHER AMAZING video...thank you Cass. I want to watch this one, again....for things I need to be doing. Yes! Totally agree....writing that Christmas list for family members...HELPS SO MUCH. Something I began doing a few years ago, was to plan their gifts a year ahead of time....this way before Christmas planning allows to take advantage of sales and special deals....I have even picked up a gift or 2 (in pristine/good condition, already at the thrift store or garage sale....again, the item was in fantastic shape... Such helpful advice...thankbyou 💖

Core values are just the main things that are really important to you. Mine are: Helping Others, Family, My Home, Freedom to make my own decisions and having a Legacy. Everyone has different core values, it's just asking yourself what is most important to you.

I recognize I indulge because I feel left out and pity for myself if I can't enjoy it all. I now take "tastes" of what looks good on my plate first, then go back for seconds of what was really good in a small portion knowing with so much food prepared, I can pack a few 5x7 meal containers and have a few easy, preportioned meals to look forward to.

Let yourself eat what you love, Cas. But realize that when you indulge in trifle or 6 different deserts, take a second to notice that what your body actually craves after all that at your next meal is veggies, to balance it out. And then you eat your favorite veggies, the ones you actually like, that actually taste good. Veggies aren't a punishment, Cas. They're a counterweight, for the sugar you Need. You can get dopamine from veggies too. But you have to believe that theyre indulgent. You have to stop beliving that its a punishment to have veggies. Start with sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are a superfood. Theyre soo good, toss some butter on there. (Skip the marshmallows if your family does that) Its indulgent, but it's also good for your body. Also, try eating a protein before sugary snacks instead if veggies. When you're craving sugar. You're seeking dopamine, yes, but you're also craving the quick energy that comes from sugar. So if you eat a protein first, you're going to want less sugar, because you get that dopamine fix you're searching for and you get the quick immediate energy that sugar provides, but also you get the substantial energy that protein provides and it will keep you feeling that dopamine longer. If you're doing veggies before sugar, it's actually setting you up to fail because yes, you're getting your veggies and that's good for you, but also, you're putting that sugar on a pedestal and enforcing that belief that veggies are the work and sugar is a reward. You're fueling the addiction that way because it's like a double dose of dopamine.

I’m sorry for your friend and your sadness. I lost my best friend 5 years ago to lung cancer. She never smoked a day in her life and was a very healthy person. This is going to sound a little crazy. All of those words are just words. We "should" do things s, we "should" do that. Ask you're "why?" Then jettison your shoulder to only those which make sense for you in your current time of life with your current responsibilities. Ask yourself not "do we like this activity orthing," but is it meaningful?
