Probably the best tutorial for us rookies on the web. So many artists are selfish with their tricks and tips.....thank you for your time and the lesson.

Get a grip. Selfish?! What, people that have practised for years and years, paid for courses or mentoring, read and paid for books to hone their craft and you're calling them out because they don't want to upload a video step by step guide for you?? People like you who are always looking for shortcuts are the people that make this world a shitter place, jog on you pleb.

@@D-D0G For one ….. you don't know me.....and with your attitude will never have the pleasure. I work in a dangerous profession that was held back for years because the old timers would not share their tricks and tips with the young up and comers that followed them. And yes....they are selfish, just as I am sure that you are, with your dweeb comment. I will not continue this conversation and disgrace what this man has done by taking the time to SHARE with others his knowledge and expertise. I hope that one day you can understand what your comment brings to this page.

I think it'll take some practice on my part to even get half as good:) I'd like to do this technique on a furniture project I have in mind, re-creating antique advertising lettering. 2 coats of brush clear is not as durable as automotive urethane clear. ( which should be sprayed on ) if you drive this vehicle every day, in sun and snow and rain. Wash it and wax it . It will hold up for a little while. I usually do gold leaf on antiques and show vehicles. It will hold up fine in this circumstance. Thank you for watching

I once had to do a mural on the inside of a dome. It was 35' wide and the corresponding height and depth. Four figures and a main figure. The only way to do it was with a projector. I mounted the projector on a flat surface connected to a ball joint on a solid photographers tripod for complete control while I traced it down. It seems to me this would be useful for complex lettering or patterns on surfaces that have two or more curves.

Painted some flames on car hood once. Artist friend of mine convinced me to use gold leaf on the flame tips. He showed me how. He didn't use adhesive. He put alcohol on the hood and put a piece of leaf on top. The alcohol dried up and sucked the leaf flat onto the paint. Trim with a razor blade and clear over it. It has been there for 22 years and still looks great. It was a small area about 3/8" x 1". Don't know how well that would work on a large area like those numbers.

After seeing your work it made me realize two things. 1) It will take a lot of years and a lot of practice to get on that level 2) I wish I lived closer to where you are, so I could commission you to do some silverleaf on my motorcycle. That work is insanely great. I respect how good wasn't good enough. Adding in those extra layers made it that much better. I do have one question for you, if I may. Im doing diy leaf on a hand gun. Can I use this process. If so do you have video on chemicals/paint prep? I ask cuz when you said you put the coat you mentioned you didn't thin it. I'd like to know the thinning process
@rickbendi8709

I never did a gun. Im worried about durability. I would check another source for information. The clear I use is DUX quick dry sizing. I never thin it , it’s better used straight. I use it to put the leaf on and the same clear to top coat it. I hope this helps. Thanks

Hi rick I started to search the almost 400 comments to find out the color of blue on the car?. I appreciate the tutorial -I am planning a silver leaf on my number panel on blue also. Again what color blue please. Regards
@rickbendi8709
@rickbendi8709 Жыл бұрын
I’m sorry, but I did not paint the blue on the car. But off the top of my head i would say it’s ether marina blue ( a GM color from the 60’s )or Iroc Camaro blue from the late 80’s. Look at those colors, I think ether one is a great color. And a good background. Silver leaf with a black shadow and red or light blue outline would be killer. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😎

I used "variegated leaf"...as well, one word, many don't know what "Dutch gold leaf " is..no criticism just saying. Also after 50 years in biz I would use 1 Shot white with a bit of boiled linseed oil to avoid buying size in a pinch, and a white backing gives a little Xtra to brilliance. Man.. I'm retired now but spent years pinstriping and lettering race cars and Big Rig diesel trucks. Thanks good work. Paolo

It will work on metal. But for durability you should spray automotive urethane clear over it. Brush clear does not have as much durability in the weather. Thanks for watching 😎

It’s ok to clear everything with a automotive urethane, but no not polyurethane. Also, if you clear it with urethane, make sure you spray 3 coats very light , like a mist ,before you hit it hard. To much to fast can lift the artwork. Always try samples before doing it on original artwork. Thank you.

M yes you Can use imitation leaf. The leaf I used is Dutch gold . It’s more like a foil. It works the same as 23 carat , but cheaper. The brush you use should be a lettering quil. I use a “ luco “ or a “ langnickel “ or “ French master “. All great brushes. The sizing for the leaf is “ dux “ quick dry . Hope this helps. Have fun !

🤔I’m not quite sure. I’ve never done anything like that. Is it wood? Is it Formica? Granite? It will not hold up ,with the process I did on that car. Hi there, I will be gold leafing the name on the transom of my boat. 2 questions. 1. Can you apply varnish directly onto the gold leaf, or should I do two coats of the dux onto the leaf, then varnish? And 2. What type of product do you use for the black shadow and blue outline?? Any info would be great, I appreciate it.

Jacob Erdey hi Jacob. Apply the gold leaf with the quick dry dux. Then after the leaf is applied, brush varnish the lettering with the same quick dry dux .wait 24 hours then give it a second coat. With same quick dry dux. And the shadow. ..I use Ronan lettering enamel. Thin sparingly with mineral spirits. No clear is necessary over the enamel. Hope this helps
@jacoberdey2647
@jacoberdey2647 4 жыл бұрын
Rick Bendi thanks! Very helpful. I will still be putting 4-5 coats of marine spar varnish over the name and whole transom after the name artwork is complete. I’m assuming the varnish will stick just fine to the dux clear coat and the lettering enamel after it’s all cured. Does that sound right to you?
@rickbendi8709
@rickbendi8709 4 жыл бұрын
Jacob Erdey I’ve never done that , but I believe it would be fine. Just remember that spar varnish has a amber tint to it , so it my alter the colors you use. Good luck!😁

@rickbendi8709 Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure of a kit. Just get lettering quills no.‘s 2 ,4 , 6 , 8 , 10. That should cover most lettering jobs. I like the grey quills. They have more snap. The brown quills are softer , like for glass .get a couple of them. See if you like them. They have synthetic and real hair. I use real. Most brands are good. Langnickle, Luco , Mack, French Master. Grumbacher. Have fun. Thanks for watching
