I once had to do a mural on the inside of a dome. It was 35' wide and the corresponding height and depth. Four figures and a main figure. The only way to do it was with a projector. I mounted the projector on a flat surface connected to a ball joint on a solid photographers tripod for complete control while I traced it down. It seems to me this would be useful for complex lettering or patterns on surfaces that have two or more curves.

Painted some flames on car hood once. Artist friend of mine convinced me to use gold leaf on the flame tips. He showed me how. He didn't use adhesive. He put alcohol on the hood and put a piece of leaf on top. The alcohol dried up and sucked the leaf flat onto the paint. Trim with a razor blade and clear over it. It has been there for 22 years and still looks great. It was a small area about 3/8" x 1". Don't know how well that would work on a large area like those numbers.

Fantastic video. What paint are you using on your paint brush? Is it normal paint kids would use? Or is it acrylic or 2K?
@rickbendi87095 жыл бұрын
Edward James the paint I’m using is Ronan lettering enamel. Thinned slightly with mineral spiritual. Thanks for watching

When the size is properly dried and the leaf application completed, do you have to do the burnish/turning immediately if you're going to, or is it ok to wait a little?
@rickbendi87093 жыл бұрын
You can wait. Thanks for watching

Looks great, Rick! Helpful video. A nearby Letterhead out in Elgin. My quick dry size is Luco. Do you know if Dux is pretty similar? The only other size I've used is LeFranc slow. I haven't done a lot of gilding. Thanks for posting.

Awesome job! Thank you for making it look much easier than it probably will be (for me). Btw, I had to watch the video twice, once for all the stuff in the garage, and the second time to actually watch your masterful work. Could you please share the links to the products you used?

Can you use imitation leafs? Thanks if you respond🙏
@rickbendi87094 жыл бұрын
M yes you Can use imitation leaf. The leaf I used is Dutch gold . It’s more like a foil. It works the same as 23 carat , but cheaper. The brush you use should be a lettering quil. I use a “ luco “ or a “ langnickel “ or “ French master “. All great brushes. The sizing for the leaf is “ dux “ quick dry . Hope this helps. Have fun !

You say Dutch Gold, I googled and found “imitation leaf” sometimes called Dutch metal. Is this the same thing essentially? Looks fantastic and great tutorial, to the point.

friend please I'm from Brazil what product did you use to fix the sheet in the tank?
@rickbendi87092 жыл бұрын
To stick the gold on the tank, I use a product called “ DUX “ QUICK DRY SIZING. Then after the gold is on , I brush a coat of clear over the gold with the same product. I never thin this product. I use it strait out of the can. I hope this helps you. Thanks for watching 👍😎

Hi what brushes are u using... that looks absolutely fantastic
@rickbendi87095 жыл бұрын
Johnnie Passmore I use a grey Langnickle quill. There are browns ,and grey. The grey has the right amount of snap ,for me. Browns are softer .Brushes are numbered. ( for size ). The sizing brush was a # 12. The outliner was a #2. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

If I want to use imitation gold leaf on my kitchen counter, how should i seal it to make sure it holds up long term?
@rickbendi87093 жыл бұрын
🤔I’m not quite sure. I’ve never done anything like that. Is it wood? Is it Formica? Granite? It will not hold up ,with the process I did on that car. I’m not sure if automotive clear would even hold up. I would do a test area ,no matter what you decide to do .Sorry, do some research and see what happens. Let me know 😁thanks for watching

Hi there, I will be gold leafing the name on the transom of my boat. 2 questions. 1. Can you apply varnish directly onto the gold leaf, or should I do two coats of the dux onto the leaf, then varnish? And 2. What type of product do you use for the black shadow and blue outline?? Any info would be great, I appreciate it.
@rickbendi87094 жыл бұрын
Jacob Erdey hi Jacob. Apply the gold leaf with the quick dry dux. Then after the leaf is applied, brush varnish the lettering with the same quick dry dux .wait 24 hours then give it a second coat. With same quick dry dux. And the shadow. ..I use Ronan lettering enamel. Thin sparingly with mineral spirits. No clear is necessary over the enamel. Hope this helps
@jacoberdey26474 жыл бұрын
Rick Bendi thanks! Very helpful. I will still be putting 4-5 coats of marine spar varnish over the name and whole transom after the name artwork is complete. I’m assuming the varnish will stick just fine to the dux clear coat and the lettering enamel after it’s all cured. Does that sound right to you?
@rickbendi87094 жыл бұрын
Jacob Erdey I’ve never done that , but I believe it would be fine. Just remember that spar varnish has a amber tint to it , so it my alter the colors you use. Good luck!😁

Is there a brush kit u suggest for getting started ?
@rickbendi8709 Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure of a kit. Just get lettering quills no.‘s 2 ,4 , 6 , 8 , 10. That should cover most lettering jobs. I like the grey quills. They have more snap. The brown quills are softer , like for glass .get a couple of them. See if you like them. They have synthetic and real hair. I use real. Most brands are good. Langnickle, Luco , Mack, French Master. Grumbacher. Have fun. Thanks for watching

How durable is that gold? Can you apply clear coat over the top? Can you get large sheets to do a large section of metal?
@rickbendi87095 жыл бұрын
smoke skull the gold has to be cleared. I used a brush varnish. It’s best if you can use automotive clear. “ urethane”. I’ve never seen gold leaf sheets bigger than the one I used.
