An excellent manual. My grafting of Siberian pine by the method of "in the cleft" and "improved copulation" did not take root this year due to the heat and lack of rain. And the method of "vpryklad on cambium" on strong seedlings gave 50% of an excellent result. Greetings from Russia) Отличное пособие. Мои прививки сосны сибирской методом "в расщеп" и "улучшенной копулировкой" не прижились в этом году из-за жары и отсутствия дождей. А метод "вприклад на камбий" на сильных саженцах дал 50% отличного результата. Привет из России)

What is a good source to order rootstocks from and scions too? Thank you, great videos by the way!

Brooks Tree Farm near Salem Oregon is a large nursery where you can purchase understock. There will be minimums, but check out there web site. For the scions you would need to collect them from an exiting unusual tree that you want to propagate.

I have a question about the selection of the root stock (under stock). Is the selection random? Is the growth of the graft (in terms of shape and height) determined by the scion? In other words, if I want the plant to grow straight up but the tree itself to be weeping (for example), the choice of the understock would be from a straight tree and the scion from a weeping tree. right? could do you clarify further

I bought a weeping Picea glauca pendula from the conifer kingdom, and they sent me a 2-year-old tree that was still staked. I was wondering if I could propagate it without having to graft again (maybe using air layering (?) and if yes at what age could I do that? The reason why I bought it was because I was told it wouldn't grow too tall only 15 plus feet. I tried to find out what they used to graft it, but they told me we "do not recall!"

It might be better to grow big trees when you want big trees and varieties that are naturally small when you desire smaller trees. Natural trees are very good, when grafting you risk loss of specimens and trees rejecting or "throwing" grafts later on in their life cycles. This can be very inconvenient and maby even dangerous when trees achieve larger growth. I am raising a weeping larch trees at this time which is a good example of a natural dwarf specie. Growing trees in pots is another method that can be used to achieve dwarf specimens. I have a dwarf beech tree that i planted in a 10 gallon pot with 2 hazelnut seedlings to keep it dwarf. I then dug a hole in the ground and placed the pot with the trees into the hole and backfilled with dirt to maintain proper moisture levels and keep the roots cool during summer heat. They seem to be doing well.

Hello. What temperature is needed for grafted plants, after grafting?

We keep the new grafts in an unheated greenhouse. Keeping the graft union moist is more important than temperature.

I am growing some seedling nordmaniana now hoping to try it as rootstock as an alternate for firma which is a solution for here in the deep south. Do you have success with that rootstock???

What rootstock would be best for Abies Amabilis? I tried to grow some from seed and that has failed for me, so I'm thinking it is time to just graft.

Nice video. Why graft?
@JensNyborg
@JensNyborg Жыл бұрын
The characteristics of a graft is much more predictable than those of a seedling. Sometimes the odds of a suitable seedling are really low, and then you graft. Sometimes you simply can't get the top you want from the same seedling that produces the roots you need, and then you graft. Also you might graft a scion with a desired growth habit onto the understock in an interesting place. Like the Icebreaker in this video. (And they seem to do that kind of thing a lot in bonzai.)

I'd say it is because they are still too weak and immature to be able to withstand the elements. He had some 2 years old ones outside.

can I use white fir as a root stock, I am going to try my first graft. I bought a Koru Japanese White Pine and want to do a graft for fun and my first experience before I start school for horticulture. I'm going to assume I need a pine root stock?
@burklandgardens643

White fir is not a common understock. Understock for a Japanese White Pine need to be a 5 needle pine, like Pinus stobus.
