I know this was 8 years ago but i just want to say this video is still helping people. I'm brand new to painting and specifically getting the scaling right was the thing i wanted to learn and this video was absolutely perfect for me. Thanks so much!

Do you have any tips for how stretched canvases arent exactly the dimensions they say they are? I usually do everything freehand, but im tired of eyeballing everything, so im tryina really understand how to do this.. but my canvases are always off by a qt to half n inch! Arrrr still off... Maybe i should just leave more room on the edges of the reference photo?
@Paintinglessonsonline3 жыл бұрын
Oh really? I haven't noticed that canvases are not always the stated dimensions... For the grid technique, if you are dealing with an odd size canvas, I suggest adjusting the size of the printed image so that it has the same ratio as the canvas. For example a canvas of 20x35 inches has a ratio of 4:7, so print your image at 4x7 inches. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Painting Lessons Online hello. The majority of my images always come out on 8.5 or 8X10 but I have an 20X24 canvas. How would I go about gridding something like an standard 8x10 on that?

Ok so what if you had an 18x24 size canvas then what would be the ratio? Or how many inches would i go on the paper and on the canvas??
@Paintinglessonsonline3 жыл бұрын
For 18x24in you could divide the canvas into 3:4 sections of 6 inch squares, 6:8 sections of 3 inch squares, or 18:24 sections by 1 inch squares depending on the complexity of the image. The more complex, the smaller squares you want.

Question: What's the end-result difference of using a grid or just projecting the image?
@Paintinglessonsonline4 жыл бұрын
Projection is easier than the grid. Using the grid method is a tool to help someone eventually draw without aid the correct perspective of a desired image.

What about the white edges around the picture? Do you leave that out on the canvas?
@Paintinglessonsonline3 жыл бұрын
I only grid the image itself, so the white edges are just the extra space on the paper.

my canvas is 8 x 10 so i need to crop my image to 4 x 5 right?
@Paintinglessonsonline3 жыл бұрын
Exactly! Then you can divide your canvas into 2 inch squares and your image into 1 inch squares :) OR if you want, you can print your image out at 8 x 10inch and divide it into 2 inch squares that are equal to the grid on your canvas for even easier transference of the image.

What if it’s not exact doubles? Like mine is 24 x 48 and the image is 7.5 x 5.5???
@Paintinglessonsonline4 жыл бұрын
If you want the image to fit perfectly you will need to get a canvas with the same proportions. If you cant do that, then you can crop the image so that it has the correct proportions or grid the image smaller onto the canvas and fill in the empty space on the canvas with something else.

This didn’t work for a 18 x 24 canvas 🙃
@Paintinglessonsonline3 жыл бұрын
You gotta divide the canvas size to a ratio that matches the photo. So if your canvas is 18 x 24 you have the 3:4 ratio, so your image can be 6 x 8. Then you can divide your image into 1 inch squares and divide your canvas into 3 inch squares so that both the image and canvas have 6 squares by 8 squares
@narcovice6 жыл бұрын
even with this can't draw a damn grid won't come straight
