Hello we are a busy repair shop thinking on adding a system to just repair heads surfacing , valve grinding , nothing crazy. Is getting pretty hard finding a machine shop that won’t put you in a 1 or 2 week waiting list, a lot of new shops with not good experience we having to do it over again is time and money 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’m pretty sure you done this for years. Looks pretty easy but it takes experience thanks for showing how the machine works

I was taught to grind the face, then the stem, measure the overall length with a dial indicator and return to the grinder to regrind the tips with the flat stone on the right until they are all equal lengths. The tolerance given to me was plus/minus 0.0005", but I try to hit zero on all of them, as all machinists should.

Justin, I have a question/ idea that so far haven't got any response from three others I've asked. I'm doing a repair on an altima and no.3 has a miss. Checked the valve clearances and the exhaust has no clearance. Dont have time to order new shims so why couldn't I pull the cam and dremel the stem enough to get it to spec? Thanks.

I love your ingenuity! You can try anything you want to, but I can think of a few reasons that I wouldn't recommend that. First, if you are grinding material off of your valve while it is in the engine, you are going create a lot of metal "dust" particles that will destroy your engine. Second, you cannot grind the valve accurately with a dremel (to be within spec, you need to be within 0.001-0.002 inches of spec, and the top of the valve needs to be perfectly flat or it will cause wear on both your rocker arm and valve. Third, if the valve clearance isn't correct, something else is wrong; grinding the tip of the valve won't fix the original problem and it will probably keep getting worse.

@@JustinMillerAutomotive Thanks for your reply. I guess once the cam is out I could take the bucket shim to the tech school and have them surface grind the bucket top to spec.

Hello, i am just getting into valve grinding. I have a Qwik Way SVS 2 with an Accuchuck. I am primarily grinding Subaru Valves. A few questions i have are how do you spot a bent valve in the grinder? Other that obvious wobble? I have no issues doing the exhaust valves but on the intake valves there are times where the valve face gets a little bigger and then slightly smaller, Not by much just enough to catch your eye. The entire valve face gets cleaned up no problem and they, prussion blue and valve seal great. Is the valve just a little warped or is it normal on bigger size valves like intakes to have a larger amount of runout? Whats the deal? Thank you for responding.

You can identify a bent valve when you try to grind it and only one side of the valve face contacts the stone. No valve is perfect, so continue to grind it a little more. If you end up with too little margin left before the entire valve face is cleaned up, the valve it is definitely not usable. If you are unsure if the valve is bent or if it is just chucked incorrectly, loosen the chuck and rotate the valve in the chuck. If it still contacts in the same spot, then it is the valve, not the mounting that is causing the problem. It is also very common to see slight inconsistencies in the width of the valve face after grinding. Again, as long as the margin is within spec and is consistent all the way around, the valve is usually okay to use.

OLÁ. Me parece ser uma ÓTIMA máquina. Informo que válvulas com endurecimento da superfície de contato com a séde (cimentação) não são retificáveis devido a perda da camada endurecida. ABRAÇOS... Roberto Udo Krapf

It is an old "Sioux" valve grinder. Snap-On bought this company years ago, and I think they have discontinued their products. However, you can still buy some parts and accessories for them at Goodson Tool.

is it really necessary to grind the tip?
@JustinMillerAutomotive
@JustinMillerAutomotive 3 жыл бұрын
If you have bucket lifters, it is not necessary except to bring the valve clearance into specification. If you have rocker arms that directly contact the valve, it is usually a good idea, but not always required if there is no detectable wear on the tip.
