She is trying to go quickly because she understands that the longer they are being handled the more stress they are under. She is still being careful with their skin as being matted is very painful and can cause skin infections. Dede stays calm and does comfort them as needed. She grooms dogs that others turn away! Owners please always check for knotting with a comb, not a brush, otherwise you can't get close to the skin. Dede, I have been grooming my own dogs for 15 years and I have picked up many tips from you. Thank you!

I had a Shih tzu for 16 years. It took me going through 4 groomers before I found a really good groomer. It's worth it Shih tzu are very special they really love to look pretty at least my little girl did 💟

@@jeneil2711 unfortunately I had to put my precious little fur baby down. Due to her failing health. I had her sence she was 7 weeks old hardest thing I ever did. She was one of the greatest joy of my life even my kids new Miss Gracie came before them lol . I have beautiful loving memories of her. Next puppy I get will be another Shih tzu lovely breed very easy to train a very special breed.

As a groomer you honestly should have been able to tell the dog was matted straight away. I would have asked the woman about her technique, explained professionally why it wasn't working. Then you get the comb and show them the matting and how it will NOT brush out and is painful for the dog. Clip the dog as close as needed-humanity over vanity. Teach proper technique and boom! They can grow the dog out and get whatever style they'd like in the future!

What kind of brush would you recommend for a Shih Tzu? I have had mine for about 4 mo now, and she was freshly shaved when I took her into my care. I thought I was diligent enough about brushing her, especially now that her hair is pretty long, but she has some matts in areas like the back of her legs and inner thighs. I’ve stopped having her wear her collar even because it just gets matted lol.

Mary Macfadzen get a slicker brush and a comb. Go through with the slicker and then check to make sure you got it out with the comb. As for the mats on the inner thighs, I take those off with a 10 blade. As for the collar get a rolled leather collar, it won’t mat the hair but you won’t be able to use a leash with it, you will need a harness. I have an 8 year old Shih Tzu that I groom myself hope this helped.

Owners!: do a cut that's the safest and most comfortable for the dog and not what you think looks best. Its kinda cruel to force a style/ cut on an animal just because u want them to have a certain look. 🙄 I think this groomer did an awesome job grooming the dog and also making sure the customers happy. Definition of a true pro right here!

I have a shih tzu with long hair. I comb her with a metal comb several times a day, every single day. I also trim her hair around her eyes on a regular basis. I could tell as soon as I saw this poor dog that she was matted and not being cared for as diligently as she should be. The hair around her eyes causing all the drainage was a huge sign. I do not believe the owner about how committed she was or is to brushing her dog or caring for her coat. It caused such a great amount of discomfort for the dog, plus a ton of extra work for the groomer. Also I’d like to state that the groomer really needed to give the dog a moments break every now and then, just a moment is all that’s needed to reassure the dog that she’s ok and in safe hands. This dog was very stressed and uncomfortable, a kind pat could have helped calm her. Other than that it’s a great video, the groomer is good and seems to be knowledgeable at what she does.

Poor baby was in such bad shape when she came in. The groomer did a good job. I have a Shih Tzu also in my opinion, her hair was too long because it grows so fast. I know that was what the owner wanted.

This owner was upset with her previous groomer because he/she shaved all of the dog hair off due to NO KNOTTING, yet she sat in your face and LIED saying this dog wasn’t matted.🤨 Now you’re wasting time combing out the matts on top of that I’m sure this poor dog is experiencing pain.🤦🏾‍♀️

As for the wining that she is doing it isn't because it's hurting her she is a baby and has to get used to it. Sometimes they wine in the tub or even when you shave them it dosent necessarily mean it's hurting them. Any one who says this dog should have been shaved please tell me you are not a groomer nor do you plan to be one. Also the dogs head is still wet and she gives her a sweater he will be what we call solid matted next time he gets groomed and need to be shaved for sure because of those 2 things

Honestly I don't know if it's the same with a dog's fur, but I have a very sensitive scalp and it hurts when others brush my hair... but going slowly doesn't help in that situation. If it has to be brushed by someone else, I'd want it newly washed and conditioned, but Idk if that's a possibility for dogs :p

I agree with you Pyo. DAMN! You DON'T brush and rip out the mats 🤬! You cut them out! Gently 😤 Sometimes you can take scissors and cut through the long and thick mats, and sometimes you have to cut the mats out by the ends, closest to the skin, right at the end of the mats. But you still have to be gentle, no matter what. It's like when people with long hair, when they get snarls, you don't brush out the heavy knots, they get cut through with scissors or cut at the base of the knot, if not soaked with peanut butter or what have you, but can't put peanut butter through dog hair, it doesn't work with dogs, 😂 to my knowledge, but dogs love peanut butter so it would just make the trimming process more difficult cuz they WANT the peanut butter😂 But what this groomer is doing with this dog, aaaw, poor baby 😭 Just wrong🤬

Am I watching the same video as everyone else? I think she wasn't that matted or Dede would have said something to the owner. Like she did when she showed her the eye mats. These little dogs always wimper thats why people spoil and baby and coddle them. She was shaking before Dede even touched her. Probably worried she would be there until 11pm. Also, Dede specializes in mean and hard to groom and senior dogs. She is not a show groomer though I think she knows how. I did not think she was holding chin to hard. When you over comfort them it makes them think something wrong. Quit and calm.

I don’t often comment but fair’s fair. I was taught that you shouldn’t put pressure on the lower jaw because you will damage the joint/ligaments/tendons. Poor pup probably was hurting. These breeds have such sensitive skin and you need to hold the skin down with the upper hand always while brushing. She was crying because she was hurting and scared. A pet parent probably would not brush that quickly to get the job done and would be sensitive to the pain. That poor pup already had a Matt after a full groom. This shows how quick some pups Matt-up. By the time pup gets home she will be matted by the jumper. In response to another comment if the jumper is much bigger they get their arms caught. My dog has a full coat. By the time you get through the coat some days there are new matts where you started. Give the owner a break. This pup is brushed and not everyone has the ‘feel’ for grooming. The difference over the rump is probably new hair and shedding of the undercoat which gets caught as it sheds hence the different texture. It is NOT really matted just stuck on the longer hair. Often the undercoat is not the same texture and as someone else mentioned clipping RUINS the coat and changes the texture and then you will get matts. The eyelashes protect the eyes that’s why they grow there. Clipping can create runny eyes as the hair grows into the eye instead of guarding it. Puppy parent is probably nervous being recorded. That’s why she talks so much. Try and be understanding

Most educated comment here along with someone else.. you have to find a groomer that is educated on your breed. Some ppl don't know about long hair breeds. She shouldn't be wearing clothes either it's going to Matt up more.

Sharyn loius that dog didn't get that Matt from just standing there Dede just missed it when she was doing her. That's why I say the PP might brush her at home but look Dede missed a Matt and that's her job. So Dede needs to be more understanding with people when their dogs are matted. But people need to keep the clothes off of these long hair breeds it is just a bad as letting them get in water. Not good if you are not wanting them shaved.

Well sorry to say this, but if you have a breed and don't do your research on how to keep the coat from tangling to keep it long, THEN DO NOT COMPLAIN when we are forced to clip them. Start over, (it takes hours and very painful brushing\ de matting). I was able to clip down a matted coat and keep it from getting matted for 2 years now. Stop being lazy and making excuses. How hard is that to comprehend. Don't own a dog that you don't know how to take care of.

Before people decide on a dog with long hair, they should watch videos like this. And ask themselves, do I really have the time to devote to doing a daily brushing, and grooming of my dog. It takes daily grooming, and alot of TCL, for long haired breed dogs. Letting your dog get matted, is cruel , hear the puppy cry.

@@doodabodker1770 best to watch videos of show breeders grooming their show dog. They tell you different products and brushes they use to keep the coat in top shape. Learn how to groom yourself or find a trust worthy groomer that know about keeping a long hair breed in long coat.. I would ask so many questions.. because even know you brush everyday you are going to find a tangle or two duh!! Lol I love Chris Christensen and crown Royal show shampoo and conditioner on long coated breeds. You have to get educated on what works on your dogs coat.. not every product works!!! If that's a shihtzu ask a breeder who breeds and show them they will let you know what products to use on their coat type..

@@swissmaid if you actually think this dog was matted to the point that it needed to be shaved than hopefully you are not a groomer. If that dog was as matted as everyone is thinking, it would have taken alot longer to brush. Not to mention if brushing a dog properly is so easy like everyone on here is saying than shouldn't it be even easier for professional groomers to brush what the PP cant, well depending on how bad the matting is obviously. A PP can brush their dog all day but if you are not doing it properly it will just be a waste of time. There is a technique to brushing a dog and some people just can't do it. As far as this dog goes I can't believe everyone is saying how horrible this PP is. Not to mention the dog wasn't that old so I'm sure the PP is probably still trying to figure out the whole brushing thing herself but matted I didn't see any thing to raise a stink over personally

@@doodabodker1770 It didn't look matted to me, just that this dog has some undercoat issues. The previous shaving will make the hair knot more easily because it shreds and damages the hair so while it isn't actually matted, it will still act like it.

I don't think this doggy's mama doesn't 'brush' her dogs. I'm sure she does but is only doing the top coat and not getting through the undercoat from the skin out with the proper comb etc. She most likely thinks she doing a good job regularly grooming but has no idea what she's doing wrong. Dede will show her what to do in future I'm sure. I literally posted this a couple seconds before she called her owner through lol.

Oh man those coats are difficult to maintain, I spent way too much time on my Shih Tzu and ended up shaving. You need products and super regular trips to a specialty groomer. Needless to say $$$$

No that’s the reason why the owner didn’t want to be in the room while the groomer was brushing. She knew the pup was matted. :( She’s sorry for letting her girl get like that she looks lazy. I have a 10 yr old Yorkie and a 4 mth old Shih Tzu. I groom them myself. I would never let them be matted up and yes if needed in the summer get a shave down or thin out on the coats for sure. This is just sad. Poor pup.

That dog was matted. Many owners think their dogs are NOT matted when they bring them to a groomer......but they ARE ! Take responsibility and brush your DOGS , brush their teeth and keep their nails trimmed !! IF you don't have the time to take care of them, then maybe you shouldn't own a pet. Just my opinion.

I had to stop watching when the dog started whinning and crying, I can't stand to see a dog being hurt, I know it needed to be done but it just seemed way too rough. The owner needs to realize she isn't fully keeping this dog properly brushed and puts her through this torture because of it. I appreciate all the information but I think you are kind of rough handling the dogs. I don't mean it in a mean way but just too rough for my liking. Sorry!

My Malshi whines and cries, too, and it's not necessarily pain. This pup could have been whimpering from the frustration of being held still when she's not been trained to do so, or a fear of heights, or maybe prior bad experiences. I also think the owner could have done a lot more to properly care for her pup, especially washing her face of tear stains and combing out tangles before they become mats.

Paula Gunn mine whines the second I even place a brush near him, unfortunately he hasn’t been trained well & just hates anything to do with grooming. He isn’t being hurt at all when it hasn’t even touched him yet, yet he’s crying lol

Wouldn't you complain having that stupid 'dog up' between your legs? The first thing you do, is to check the coat for mats, before you believe what the client says, aka not matted! Then one must educats the owner on how to brush and che k with the comb. And every brush stroke is like a hit on the dog....too rough on a little baby! Not a great introduction to grooming. No wonder dogs learn to bite the groomer! The brush is also to big for a little dog. And stop taking your frustration out on the dog!!! So rough! Shoving it here and there, ever heard of gentle?

I agree! I own a long haired dog about 30x the size of that one (90 lb Golden Retriever), and if I didn't brush him every other day at least he would be more matted than this one. If I can handle it, they should be able to handle taking 10 mins a day to brush their dog. It's not that hard to brush them!

I bet if you let your hair go for a good number of weeks without brushing and someone sat you down and did this to you it would be the last time you would groom a shih tzu this way! The dog is pulling this badly because it HURTS. You could have at least used a Safari Dematter and thinning shears to work them out. No way, if a pet parent doesn't brush them and wants it long I will not torment and torture the dog to get it done. A dog has to be in pretty bad shape for me to be unable to demat. But if I can't do it without causing pain forget it.

I adopted a Shih Tzu a month ago from the shelter and the policy before bringing any pet home is they have to be spayed/neutered before bringing them home well unfortunately the shelter didn’t bathe him before being neutered so I had to wait a whole month to get him groomed. Thankfully he didnt have many mats and I was able to trim the ones farthest from him skin and he has a very thin coat so brushing was a breeze. I made sure after cutting any mats that he was brushed every night to keep it that way. Now that he’s fully groomed we still brush him every night and he loves it. He’s a little older and I believe he did belong to someone at one point but now he’s my grumpy old man and he loves being brushed. I will never let him get that long.

I don’t understand those that prefer to keep their dog’s coat long yet aren’t responsible in maintaining it clean and healthy. Reminds me of us going top a new hairdresser and telling her we want just a trim. Maybe an inch or two. And then she cuts 6 inches off. Great job Dede. Yes, that has happened to me. I asked for a trim, like a baby bang trim and they cut off inches. I would rather go back many times for a baby bang trim than have inches cut off. My hair splits no matter the length, so cutting it shorter will just give me short hair with splits (in no time) and takes me a long time to regrow.

Any dog with long or curly hair needs to be brushed everyday to keep it from getting tangled. If the dog is allowed to get tangled and matted it is painful and the brush out process is even more painful. That is why the dog in this video is wimping so much. A shave down is the most humane thing to do when the owner neglects the necessary daily care for the dog.

Well guess what Pat. Believe it or not, a LOT of hair salons do the exact same thing. They do NOT want to sit there and comb out your matted hair. They will cut it instead. If you do NOT want your MATTED hair cut off, then comb your hair properly before going in to get it done. Like I said before...A LOT of education I believe on how to deal with matted hair can be learned from watching a simple black hair video. Different types of products used for the hair, but it's the EXACT same process.

Pat Hallquist I'm not sure if that really makes sense, let me brush my dog out so the groomer can charge me an arm and a leg when you did half of the work yourself but yeah that's how Dede grooms. I mean Dede says she dosent have time for brushing but I don't think people really understand that brushing is a part of being a groomer. Well atleast back when grooming was still an art and not made to be a joke or a quick way to make a buck. Grooming is not something you should rush through like groomers are taught to do now adays just to get to the next client. Especially with the prices some of these places charge. If you are unable to brush your dog in between grooms to keep them from getting matted keep in mind not all groomers choose to take the easy way out and shave your dog or expect you to bring them in Matt free or its shaved. I am a groomer and I will brush dogs out if it is possible. So if you live in lv nv there is still a groomer willing to put some time and effort into the job I chose to do and I promise my prices are so reasonable its not even funny. Brushing your own pet can be more difficult for some people than others for multiple reasons and being a groomer I understand that and you think most groomers would but not when they are worried more about $.

I see all the comments and giving the dog had some mat going on, she did an awesome job, AS USUAL. She combed and brushed it all out and gave the dog a nice haircut. Although the dog had a few tangles, she didnt shave him down. she gave the dog a nice cut. I see ppl talking about, she was mean, this or that, but do y'all do this as a profession? Are you guys professionals? Yes, the dog whimped, well guess what ppl? That's what dogs do, they whimp. That women does not look after her dog. My Maltese gets her eyes washed twice a day and fully brushed and combed as well . Everyone comments on how silky and shiny her long white hair is 👍and no brown staining under the eyes 😳 I had too stop watching this as I was getting so upset . That women should not have a long haired dog if she isn’t going to put in the time and effort required of a high maintenance dog I can understand now why the previous groomer ignored the woman and shaved the dog Kudo‘s to that groomer ✌️

I am studying grooming through an online school. Lots of comments below say groomers SHOULD remove all matts, that is their job. However, as a newby, my grooming text is adamant about NOT taking out more than 4 mats (not little tangles). We need to educate the owners about brushing daily; we are not supposed to be the matt removers. Apparently the most recent advice is shave a very matted dog (unless a double-coated) and teach how to avoid matts next time. Time is money, I've been told.

Wow I hope every one dosent have this opinion when it comes to grooming. When did people loose pride in their work. To say time is money all that's says is you are money hungry and I would not want someone like that near my dog. That's where you put unnessasary stress on the dog and the groomer because you wanna rush to get the next client in the door and that's not good business. To all the negative comments. I have a Shih Tzu bichon mix, and let me tell you, mats come so fast. I have to brush, then comb my pup for 10-40 minutes a day. It is hard work. When I don't keep up, he has to be shaved. You can't just brush when you feel like it, and you have to use more than a brush. Once there is a mat, and water hits it, it tightens to the skin. This groomer did her very best, anymore would have hurt this pup.

The mix of breed is your pro lem! Bichons are a lot quicker to matt, thdn a fully grown shitzu. Never get a mix, always a pure breed, then you only have to deal with one type of coat. All dogs have undercoats. If I go a few days without brushing my fur baby, he get knots. I have to take a long time to brush him out, and he whimpers the whole time, I hate it, but they have to be brushed out. This is my second comment I was looking at the end of the tape there is no reason why you should put a sweater on the dog especially if she has her full coat now if she was shaved that would be a different story if you shave your dog and you want to put a shirt on little sweater on because it's chilly out then go for it but if the dog has its full coat putting a sweater or shirt on the dog will make her hair matted you should have educated her on that instead of letting her purchase a clothing item for a dog that has a full coat on you should have explained to her that the dog will suffer matted hair if she was to put the sweater on her unbelievable

I don't agree with everything in the video, but you can sure tell all the people who put too much responsibility on the groomer. A groomer is given dogs who are not properly cared for, who do not know them, who are not properly socialized and a time limit. A groomer can't go just at the dogs pace, that is for the owner to do at home. Teach your dog to accept and be comfortable with grooming. A groomer does not have the ability to do that! They are only a small part of the process. They have only a set amount of time with your dog, and things they must complete for the health of your dog, whether they like it or not. 90% of owners don't desensitize, train or maintenance their dog's coats between grooms. Then they come in expecting miracles from a groomer for cut rate prices and in an hour or less. She was not mean to this dog, this dog was not traumatized; she was dealing with a delusional owner and a lot to get done in a short period of time. Also when you're working with scissors around eyeballs, control is more important than coddling. I don't see her taking her frustration out on the dog, I see her doing what an idiot owner wants when she doesn't agree with it and having to go faster than she knows is ideal for the puppy because she is trying to accommodate said deluded owner.

The blow dryer matted the hair. It happens to me too. I brush my hair before I shower and before I start blow drying. If I dont brush my hairs as I'm drying it, it gets all these little knots everywhere and it's a mess at the end. (I have naturally straight hair)

Owners all be like "I brush everyday, so there are no matts!" What do you brush with? A feather duster?? I do strongly recommend if you are doing pre-bath brushing to use a spray on ALL Places you are going to brush as you go. Either just water in a spray bottle or a dematt spray or something. Brushing a dry coat damages the hair, damaged hair matts. It creates a cycle. Also I rarely use the dematt tool, as it creates a bunch of different lengths in the coat, which also will cause future matting. I try to praise the dog as much as I correct. They learn what you want, not just what you don't want and it makes the learning process faster... plus the poor little dog is scared. Praising builds trust. I don't dematt armpits at all. Just cut the hair out. It is unneeded hair anyway, if you are careful it won't even show that it is gone, and will not just matt up again for the next time. If she wasn't matted this groom is a lot easier and faster than a shave down IF NOT MATTED.

Long haired dogs shouldn't wear sweatshirts full stop. They don't need them & they matt the coat really quickly. Wearing a coat on a rainy walk is different but you still need to brush the dog when you take the coat off.
