While not a fruit or veggie, this spring I cut off a few tips of a new coleus and stuck it into a shady planter. Those are growing very well! I had no original plan to do that, but now I know how easy it is, I will every year.

@@davidthedeaf at the farm I was working on, we had these tomatoes growing. I loved the flavour and my boss would make tomato paste from them, but the effort to pick them wasn’t worth the reward IMO.. We have a variety here called ‘tommy toe’ which is a great in between size with an amazing flavour.

I did this a year ago. What he is saying is true. I have 70+ pineapples from doing this. The way I did it is a little different from what he is doing, I added cinnamon powder to the soil or on top of the pineapple.

There are 6 plants growing now in my garden but if I knew your technique last year I would have 24 pineapples ready to harvest in 6-9 months. BTW, I'm in Thailand and this seems to be a great climate for growing just about anything!

You could take the slips off once big enough and keep the rooted part in the pots and keep. Growing new slips over and over again long as the mother plant survives I do this method every time I get new crowns from my plants

I bought a massive pineapple, with top, for $10 at an Asian grocer. And I do mean MASSIVE! But I so rarely have access to pineapple tops... I'm scared to do this and screw it up. So I'll stick to what I know with this top, and if I get another chance to buy a topped one I'll try this!

I was exactly the same, but we have access to plenty of tops so eventually gave into temptation. Can you get any tops from a family member or friend to try? You could just halve the top, and will get the same result as I did with the 4.

Thank you for your comment. I have now discovered that if you pick off those 4 suckers,and leave the 4 original planted pineapple tops, another sucker will appear. It must be almost endless

I cannot believe how much they charge you down under. My goodness! And in my state, in US, all pineapples, even GMOs, have tops on.

I know. Australia is one of the most expensive countries for fresh fruit and vegetables and we export 80% of our food, so it’s not like we have a supply and demand issue. Also… Our farmers get paid very little, while the big corporations make a fortune.

How to water the pineapple plants ?Is it watering from the root instead of at the roots to prevent rotting of the stem ?

I just water from the top as that is how nature would water a pineapple plant. They do not require much water and attention though. You can plant and almost forget about it and the pineapple plant will thrive. Lots of sun and little water works best till it is fruiting.

How long did it take yours to show signs of new sucker growth?

If conditions are ideal with temperature etc. than it can take only a few weeks. The suckers on mine were around 5-6 weeks from planting.

It takes around 18 months and sometimes sooner in a warmer climate like where we are in Doonan, Australia. But in cooler climate may take up to 2 years.

For some reason food is so much cheaper in Canada than it is in Australia. Most of your tropical produce would have to travel a fair distance from South America to get to your stores, where ours grows just around the corner in most cases and it still costs a small fortune. We will be moving to Manitoba next year for a few growing seasons which I am excited about. Going to be so different to what I am use to.

@@ModernDayHomesteaders Well I'm in Vancouver and can raise 24 or so cocktail grapefruit a year, 20 meyer lemons and hopefully a lot of manderins this year. When you get the citrus bug it can sting quite deep. LOL! Have a great trip meet nice people.

It will take around 18 months to get fruit from this method. I have gotten fruit this way every time I do it and the fruit is generally larger and I am not sure of the science with this.
