I have planted potatoes over my 64 years traditionally in ground and containers and even the 99 cent shopping bags. But I always planted in the 'proper' time. Now I work part time in the produce section of a chain grocery store in my area. I took home some red and white potatoes over the past couple of months which were going to be thrown away . I had some large tubs (used to kids toys) I had grown cucumbers and pole beans in last summer. I dumped out most of the soil, added about 6 inches back in and dumped in some of the potatoes. I figured it wasn't costing me anything, and if they grew, they grew. I then added in about 12-15 inches of the old soil and wished them luck. They where planted on 28 December. This morning (23 February) they have started growing through the soil! I will let them go some more and add more compost/soil on top in the coming weeks. The potatoes I planted 'in ground' using a no-dig method a month ago seem to be doing well. I was inspired by your 'experiment' statement to see if planting super early would work. Now I'm worried. If they actually produce even a moderate crop I'll be giving potatoes away! Thanks for your constant inspiration. I have your book and really enjoy it. It's a great, basic book and I keep it for reference.

My best potatoes were the ones I made no preparation for. Some idiot had dumped 8ft pieces of vinyl siding in my apt. alley war. I got sick of seeing it and since the garbage men would not take it, I thought to use it on cat or dog houses I make for strays. One day I decided to try to use them in the garden I made 2 holes in each of the ends, forming a move sized 1/2 circle and secured it right to the chain link fence using zip ties.Ithrew any extra dirt, compost and leftover straw that I use in the cat houses in winter. The next spring I put Abby potatoes from my kitchen in there. didn't cut them or anything. Each one grew and grew giant harvests. I liked those vinyl siding 1/2 circle planters so much, I put them all around the 25 ft long yard,along the fence. no more containers or bins. It was so easy to shovel them all out, loosen the soil and throw it back in. I was amazed how well everything I grew in those things did. I added a second vinyl siding on top of the first, just making holes and using zip ties, for plants like carrots that needed a deeper space. Can't get any easier than that.

I love harvesting potatoes. Yes, Kim give it another go. Gary, you're giving me some faith in supermarket potatoes. Now, I'm going to find myself some fingerling potatoes. That should be fun to grow.
@joanies67783 жыл бұрын
FYI: They need to be organic if you plant potatoes from the supermarket. Nonorganic growers spray their potatoes with inhibitors to keep them from sprouting. Everytime I buy a bag of organic potatoes, I get sprouts. You can always try nonorganic, but you will likely be disappointed.
@wildchook7453 жыл бұрын
@@joanies6778 Yes, I know about that but no harm in giving it a go. I bought some seed potatoes and I'm about to put them in. I'm also open-minded about store-bought vegetables. What got me back into vegetable gardening was a store-bought tomato and capsicum (sweet pepper). I chuck the seeds in my flower garden and they grew. In the end, it produced some homegrown tomatoes and capsicum for my family that year. I like to try something different from the norm. Plus, people need to know if we run out of seeds that they can grow anything from the supermarket. It works for many people including me. I've done store-bought potatoes before (sprout in the pantry)and had a great harvest too.

If you use a garden fork, instead of a shovel to harvest, you are less likely to stab one of your potatoes and it disturbs the soil less. You have quite a system down. Impressive! It was nice seeing CaliKim here.

I planted some store bought potatoes that just got too shrivels to want to eat. I Planted about 25 or so chits and just harvested two plants yesterday and got a nice yield . The potatoes were very light gold in color with a smooth almost flawless skin. When I washed them they looked Peeled. Man did they cook up Nice in some garlicky olive oil. It’s late July and I’m going to leave some in for a second attempt. My soil is your typical bagged garden soil and I added some fish emollient every ten days. I got a very cool Variety of cherry sized to tennis ball sized potatoes. So Much fun digging them up.

Yep, those store-bought Pontiacs are great for growing more. I don't have much room so tend to only grow 1 or 2 plants each month from March to November in Melbourne Australia. I think we are roughly zone 9 ish and of course we are in Winter when you're in Summer. I grow in pots around 12-13 gallon size and have also grown in-ground and got pretty similar results. Nice info Gary 👍

Hi !. I was gladly surprised when basically I did worm casting with my potatoes bumper crop. I plant basically 85 % leaves and 15 % compost in open bottom 5 gallon black containers. I harvest a pot full of worms casting and potatoes. I set up again the pot with the same soil. I put tomatoes cage in the top to control the plants.

I like the bloopers at the end..lol.. The rotted potatoes are the original seed potatoe. And yes they stink so bad. My potatoes harvest this year was great. I usually plant only one time in early spring. I can most of them and store some whole. There is not much better then a pan of green beans and potatoes straight out of the garden.. yummmm

I bought a tiny bag of the medley tiny potatoes there was red yellow and purple and I sprouted them and I'm doing the basket and bucket systems were you start at the bottom and keep on covering the sprout as they break thru the soil and they are growing like crazy covering about 2 inches of spout every day so hopefully my baskets and buckets will be full of potatoes in about 2 months

I am growing small red potatoes from the grocery store. I let them chit then I take a 5 gallon bucket And put 2 or 3 inches of mulch in the bottom of the bucket. Then I set a potato on the mulch chit side up. Then I cover the potato with 50/50 mulch and peat with some organic fertilizer mixed in. I put about 3 inches of soil mix over the potato. When the green grows up to just over the top of the bucket I fill the bucket with soil mix. I plant 5 buckets a month. I am just experimenting with fertilizer types and frequency right now. Potatoes do best between 40 and 80 degrees. I live in Florida so I am going to try growing them through the winter I may have to cover them on frost nights. I am growing the buckets in 42 inch wide Kidde Pools. I drill overflow holes in the sides of the pools And a pack wood chip mulch around the buckets. The wood chip mulch he Los to keep the temperature steady and they hold some water so the buckets can wick moisture out of the Kidde pool mulch. I have four Kidde Pools do far. They will hold up to seven 5 gallon buckets. These 5 gallon buckets are just for small potatoes. I understand that if I want big potatoes then I need bigger containers

I'm growing potatoes right now that I got from a 5 pound bag from the grocery store. These are not seed potatoes but some I got in the grocery store. For eating. I lost track of them and they all had multiple eyes protruding. I'm finding more all the time. One I just planted last week so I have them in a large Styrofoam container. They will be ready after our first freeze so I'm planning on bringing them in the house before winter.

I am particularly interested in red potatoes. Is there any specific variety of the reds that I should look for?

Can sweet potatoes be done in the same manner? Are they longer in growing time?

You can plant 1 sweet potato and keep cutting the vines off to replant in different areas. The sweet potato plant is edible also.

I have a bag of potatoes I forgot about in a closet and the sprouts are super tall! Around 11 inches! I planned on planting them earlier but have been busy. Can I still plant them with such long sprouts? If so, how do I do that? Sprouts facing up or down? Should I trim them? Sorry, I have never done this before, I don't want them to go to waste if I can still plant them. Thanks in advance!

I would put the potatoes down like 4-6 inches and just let the greenery poke out. It will probably die off from the sun but new stuff will come out. QUESTION: Nice job! Great Video!! Re Potatoes. Just what I needed. I have my potatoes in pots too. When I harvest can I dump the entire pot on one of my raised beds and leave the old soil there? I would add nutrients and plant something else. Thank You.

Gary, would your containers have produced more if there was more soil to grow into?
