I'm glad you liked it Stephen! I'm so excited about how they'll do... I'm hoping the winter doesn't kill the ones outside and I'm wondering if the ones indoors can hold on until next spring! Thanks for watching!

In which season they should be planted and in which temperatures
@AnimeShinigami138 жыл бұрын
I just thumbs uped the video but Rob you have to be VERY vigilant with these. Especially if you're using a cold hardy kiwi vine. Up here in Massachusattes we have a cold hardy kiwi vine strangling three acres of forest in the town of Lenox. The sample the local environmental activist group had to show off was as thick around as my wrist. Birds as usual helped with its escape from captivity and help with its spread. The woodiness of kiwi tends to make things hard as well, they put on a thick layer of growth and then that growth turns to wood the following season and puts out a second thick layer of growth. The require religious pruning. Don't be surprised if pollination problems follow when they bloom. My guidebook for urban agriculture says that bees do NOT like pollinating kiwi vine. You may want to look into any form of companion planting that goes with these vines. You /might/ be able to attract alternate pollinators like parasitic wasps. I can tell you for certain that aphidious wasps love coriander/cilantro and DO do some pollination work. But i'm trying to get a kiwi vine to grow myself and I haven't had that kinda luck really. But those are the three warnings I've heard about kiwi cultivation repeated in different sources.

@21Mariette7 жыл бұрын

Mr. Rob good day to you. May I ask Did you selling kiwi seedlings? like Male & Female seedlings? If not by growing from seed it is possible have male and female will grow? How to identify the Male plant & Female Plant? Thank you hoping for the answer?
@RobBackyardGardenerr7 жыл бұрын
Nature and Farming I did not sell them... I only tossed the ones I didn't use. I'm not sure how to tell male from female kiwis until they produce flowers, which take several years. I'm hoping of the 10 plants I have that at least one will be male and/or female. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Great looking kiwi plants you got there! I'm planning to grow some kiwi plants from seeds next spring too but there's limited space in my garden. I think you need a ratio of 8:1 female:male kiwi plants for them to fruit. Just wondering. How do you identify which one is male or female? How do you select which ones to plant out? Thanks.
@RobBackyardGardenerr8 жыл бұрын
You can actually get by with at least a 1:1 ratio of male and female plants. I'm not quite sure about how to distinguish them at such a young age, but I have a dozen going so hopefully I get at least 1 of each... In the meantime, I'll look into it and see what I find out! Thanks for watching!

Jacquelynn Stroup they are doing ok. I'm hoping they'll make it through winter. I may get fruits next year, but it takes a few years for them. I'll provide an update within a few weeks! Thank you for asking!

Thanks for your vedio.. but I wanna know can we make male sapling and female saplings from seeds? How to make male and female saplings from seeds ?
@RobBackyardGardenerr7 жыл бұрын
Zigzag Stha Yes, but you can't distinguish male from female until they flower. That could be 4-7 years.

One of the guy on KZbin also video his kiwi berry grew from seeds. He said that the plants are 10 years old and finally produce flowers but not yet produce fruits. Lol what do you think
@RobBackyardGardenerr8 жыл бұрын
Jacquelynn Stroup Yeah... it can happen. 3-7 years is average.
@AnimeShinigami138 жыл бұрын
oh god I've heard this problem before hang on... *digs around her bookshelf* rodale organic gardening solutions printed in 2000 says... "hardy kiwifruit, the common name for actinidia arguta generally takes 3 to 9 years to reach first blossom.... " Ok it says if the growth is vigorous and there's no blossom that it may not be hot enough. If they don't bloom by 15 years old they never will. The plants may have produced blooms at different times (think ships passing in the night kinda romance), the males and females have to blossom at once. You did make sure to get plants of both genders right? Pruning may also effect blossoming, you need to avoid cutting the leaf nodes on the new growth, you need to pick between 8 and 12 leaf nodes to nurture and cut the others off. a kiwi question immediately following the "no fruit" question suggests pruning the kiwi as though it were a grape. I'm assuming the "kiwi berry" is the actinidia type and not the ones with the "fur" on them you see at most grocery stores. If thats the case monitor birds, if that vine's seeds get out into the environment you WILL see it strangle the area around it in growth. If you want to see what out of control vines can do, lookup "bittersweet vine in western massachusattes" that stuff is strangling telephone poles to the point where there's a danger to the wires in places. Again, birds helped it escape just like they did the hardy kiwis over in lenox. One dropped fruit picked over by the birds is all it will take.

I just purchase 2 orders of kiwi berry from Amazon sellers, I paid $27 total for 3 plants. 2 males and 1 female for $19 plus shipping. I brought from 2 different sellers. These plants will produce fruits. After I heard that guy said about 10 years and just produce flower I went ahead and brought them instead. What a waste of time growing from seeds

maybe, but growing from seeds only costs the cost of the fruit to get the seeds. Especially if you know what you're doing.
