I got a leaf from my friend nextdoor 50 years ago. I was 5 years old. I'm 55 years old now. My plant is 1,5 meter high and fits with big problems through the door. In the winter she stays cool and dry and in the spring she goes outside till the first cold

I heard they do that if you keep them in cold conditions during winter (for example unheated closed balcony). Unfortunately I don't have these conditions so mine are at a room temperature all year long (obviously warmer in the summer, but definitely not cold enough in winter to encourage blooming).

In the same boat of trying to make my inherited plants as happy as before 😬 idk how old mine is, but its double sized from the at least 10yo ones. I was gonna prune it and give the cuttings away but it has those gross round bug thingies. I thought it was just some dripping from the flowers 😐 welp

Hi, I live in sunny (!) Scotland and had a beautiful old jade I had brought over from Ireland (I moved around a lot). I put the plant out in the garden in the summer and one day I was out all day and it turned out to be really hot, when I got home the plant had collapsed from the heat. I brought her back inside and after a few days it seemed that she was going to be ok. Funny thing is, the branches had all drooped down but then started to turn up at the ends again as she recovered and she looked like a big candelabra! I had lots of comments about that shape, everyone wondered how I got a jade to grow that way. I eventually had to give her to a friend as I couldn't tote her around any more. She's still going strong at 37 years, living happily in a conservatory, looking like a large candelabra tree. Never give up on your jade!

Tip #6: If you live in a warm climate like L.A. and you have a giant, gorgeous jade plant with a trunk that has about as big as a medium-sized tree that has always grown outside because the pot is way too big to be inside, then you move to an even warmer climate like Palm Springs that’s only a couple of hours drive from LA and you just assume that the plant will be fine in the heat, you assume wrong, and in late August your plant will look a little droopy and within a matter of days will basically melt and you will be left with a mushy stump that is definitely dead. The secret to growing jade plants in the desert: bring them inside during the months of July through September when temps regularly reach 120ºF, and they wil thrive! Yes, that was weirdly specific…. Great video!

Very informative, thank you. My Mom passed away and she could grown anything. I have some of her plants and of course they are very sentimental to me. I don’t want to kill them. I’ve always grow a lot of things outside during the Summer, and I only started growing house plants a couple years ago. I lost a few plants in the beginning to root rot, and I’ve learned how to avoid that now, I hope. I’m extremely careful with watering. My Mom’s Jade plant is beautiful. However, on one side the branches have grown a little taller, probably the side facing the window. I will wait until Spring to cut them back a little and even it up. Great information about the type and size of the pot also. I was about to repot this one, but now thinking, maybe better to wait a bit. Thanks for your help.

Never underestimate a jade plant, mine is 15 - 20 years old and has gone three months without sun or plant light every winter, it currently lives in a large self watering pot as it is so big and top heavy, it is pruned every spring to make it more compact . I have one that's the same size as the big one against the wall and want to get it back to a fuller shape. You demonstrated clipping off the new growth, but as I've not pruned it before, should I take off more? Also, I want to replace the old soil with fresh soil, but I'm afraid I'll break off branches when I take it out of the pot its in. How would you go about repotting one of the larger ones you have? I learned how to properly prune mine from another video of yours, but I have a question if you have time: We have 2 healthy jade plants (we're in Southern California, btw) that were planted in a front flower bed outside when we bought our house. We had a plumbing issue that required us to dig them up and pot them so they weren't destroyed by the work. The soil that they were planted in is sort of sandy/clay packed dirt. We just used that dirt in the two clay pots that we put them in, and I've watered them when they were dry and it seems to dry out fine on the surface - the plants seem to be thriving. They have grown a LOT in the time they've been in the pots and are very happy looking. Should I repot them with the cactus soil anyway?

I can confirm that jade plants will do just fine when you propagate them through LECA and let them live in there afterwards. My tests from last year are all showing new growth and do not seem to mind their prolongated wet roots :D

Most houseplants can remain in water long term. It's when you place them in soil that stays wet for too long and deprives the roots of oxygen/airflow

Instead of trimming mine down, I shape and cut it back minimally- I ise twine to hold the branches up where they need to be so they don't sag. They build enough strength in time. Now my tree is 3ft tall and very lush 🤩🤩😍😍

They also love coco soil when I potted one into a high ratio of coco soil to sand soil mix and it brached like crazy, personally idk if it was the Coco or other soil mix or the ratio i used or whatnot but my other jades didnt branch so vigorously all other methods ect used are the same as the rest of my jades this was the only change, would love if anyone with good knowledge and understanding can explain why so i can hopefully apply it to other eligible plants ect thank you
@EverythingPlants

My guess would be it has something to do with the pH of the soil. Coco coir is acidic around the five to six range which is perfect for most house plants. Overtime and depending what type of water you use, soil can become more alkaline. Plants need a slightly acidic soil for nutrient uptake.

Question- if I have a cactus soil, should I add perlite to it in addition or is the cactus/succulent potting soil good enough on it's own?
@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
There's different brands that have cactus soil, so I guess it depends on the quality of the soil. You wouldn't be wrong to add more perlite so I would say go ahead lol

Try and find a plant that has thick firm green leaves. Check the top and the underside of the leaves as well as the stems, soil and the bottom of the pot for pests. If there is little white cotton like fuzz anywhere on the plant then that is mealybugs and I would avoid. If you have any other questions feel free to message on my Instagram account

Just found your channel and I’m watching your jade plant tips. I have found a neglected but thriving Gollum jade in our houses stairwell. This thing is large and has never been turned and is leaning heavily to one side. Have made a cutting and am raising it in my flat now. Can I apply all of your tips (including pruning) to Gollum jades as well?

Hi there! I have a 2 jades from my grandpa that are more than 12 years old. Ever since I moved they have been struggling. I know it’s due to light and the fact that I have never trimmed them back. After watching your video I will be trimming! I have a few questions. 1. Can I trim now in winter or should I wait for spring? The plants are getting so leggy. 2. I did get a grow light and I ended up burning the leaves! Is there a way to introduce the light to the plant? And it has 5 levels do I do the lowest one? 3. The burnt leaves do I remove them? Id love to show you pictures if that’s do-able I really want these plants to make it they are my babies.

As long as your plant is receiving enough light then you can trim it anytime of the year. I'm actually quite surprised that it burned with a grow light. You can remove them if you don't like looking at them otherwise you can leave them on. Feel free to send a picture to my Instagram account and I can have a peak as well

I need advice on the ideal setup to water an old and very large jade plant. Mine is too heavy to bring to a sink and it's even too heavy to water in a deep saucer because the plant still needs lifting to dump out excess water in the saucer. In desperation, I'm taking big old bath towels to absorb the water. Any suggestions?

@EverythingPlants
@EverythingPlants Жыл бұрын
Nothing to worry about with aerial roots. My larger one has them right now and I know I've been letting it get a bit drier then normal....so it's most likely a minor underwatering issue. Now don't run over and start dowsing it, but maybe don't let it get dry for as long. Completely normal to have those roots! If you want, send a picture over to my IG account. Id love to see this plant.

When should I first prune my jade plant? I managed to get an accidental sapling from the main plant in our house and I'm proud that I've managed to get it to grow (And at the same time, revive every other succulent in the house) . it's approaching just over 3 and a half inches in height and the stem has begun to turn into its more bark like appearance at the base. I know it needs pruning soon but is just over 3.5 inches when I should begin? (I should also add that I'm relatively new to growing a plant from a sapling/seedling. I DID have a cactus once when I was younger but I uh... over watered it ^^;)
