Crassula grows so easily from a single leaf: I was in Ikea a few months ago, and where a member of staff had moved a tray of small jade plants, they'd accidentally knocked off several of the leaves that were just sitting in the planter that I checking out for my monstera. So I pocketed them (handily, they were already cauterised so didn't need to worry about waiting for that) and there are now about 5 tiny jade plants growing on my windowsill.

How do you do that?

HEY IKEA-plant-buyer!!! Do you replant and change the soil when you get your plants there? Several of mine have died within a year as well as my friend's and I replanted one replacing the soil and it didn't die 😂 Trying to figure out the best way to treat the cheaper big plants so I can make better investments than from an expensive nursery!

If you have a pot with soil that’s hard to water because it’s too dry, water it very lightly, then come back on about 20 minutes, after it’s had time to absorb the first water, and give it a good soaking the second time. The slightly-damp soil will soak up water much better than bone-dry soil does. This works for all container plants, not just for jade plants.

The previous owners of my house left a jade plant under the front stairs (exterior stairs). In the 7+ years ive lived here it has quadrupled in size and ive never done a thing to take care of it. It gets strong morning sun and then is shaded from about 1pm(though still with plenty if reflected light). It’s survived storms, torrential rain and droughts. Thinking i might propagate a few cuttings and try to sell them off at the markets along with my woodworking stuff. I hear jade is a good luck money charm, so lets see if i can make a coin or three. 😆

I'm brand new to houseplants and started off propagating jade from cuttings taken from a plant at work. I now have 6 small jade plants of different sizes, I'm so proud of them 😊 One of them was actually 2 small cuttings I planted close together to save space that took forever to show visible growth - turns out they decided to merge at the base before growing upwards, so I have a barely 2 inch plant that is already branched 😅 Now if only my elephant jade and umbrella trees would show me the same love. I've been growing them outside on a shaded balcony and they have been fun, easy and low maintenance to grow so far, I hope they will hold up when I take them indoors as I don't get much sun. A couple of them seem due for pruning so they can start branching, I need to get on that. I'm also pleased to learn I don't need large pots as planters are expensive where I am. Thanks for the tips.

So decided to do a ad-hoc survey of my local jade while on a walk after watching this earlier: - Jade that was in sidewalk tree holes tended to be shorter but bushier then those in yards -- perhaps due to pruning, perhaps due to people walking by "accidentally" pruning (the other way people get jade). Jade is yards tended to be rarer -- likely since it's a "cheap" plant since it's everywhere, it's safer to have on the sidewalk without stealing, and people reserve their (gated) yards for fancier plants. People were stealing the fancier street succulents a lot during the plant craze. - this type of jade in the sun def gets more red, not just the edges -- it'll get even more red as the summer goes by. I'm curious if there's a difference between your jade with that distinct red tips vs this common street jade -- there's quite a few different types of jade iirc (I believe I about like six different types, but most I haven't given enough room to grow big). Yours and the street jade have the same leaf shape and growth habit. - The tallest was in someone's yard and probably around 7 feet tall, just in regular looking soil, towered above me. - The most wide was a patch like 14 feet x 4 feet wide tree cut out, around 4 to 6 feet tall - Most blocks had at least two jades, there was a few lacking any jade but they also didn't have much of any plans. Would guess it's in the top 5 for outdoor street plants, usually in less maintained plantings that look like they been there for years. Jasmine, rosemary, and Aeonium are likely also in top 5, tho those aloe that made those huge flower trees could also be there. - The saddest looking jade was in a street median Probably around the height/width of your big ones but less bushy XD I'm curious what happened as I recall that area having more plant life last year, and the block over street median is bursting with succulents. So for context, outdoor temp is usually between 50s and 60s year round, dips into the 40s during night (maybe rare 30s?). Humidity tends to be high cause ocean/fog. Soil tends to be clay-y tmk but since it's a city, the soil can very a lot depending on where the soil came from. Winter can be rainy, like days/weeks of rain, but can go years of drought and most of this jade likely survived all that (iirc they were lot less plump during the drought before the rains decided to come back and cause major flooding and for a lake to reappear in the middle of CA ). tldr: if possible, try jade outside, it's really tough and can survive a lot when established, and doesn't need it be hot.

I water my jade daily sometimes and they thrive. One of my jade is probably 5+ feet tall. I cannot imagine trying to regularly rotate that thing in it's terracotta, I'd throw out my back 😂 But mine are outside. Succulents are so much easier if you can put them outside and have all the beneficial insects and sun (tho not heat for me, where I am we rarely get above 70 last few years, but we also don't freeze), They really don't seem to have problems even when watering a lot when outside. Some of mine are in crappy AF soil that stays moist for a while, and been there for years fine! Jade is a common plant around here as a landscaping plant, there's random big jade plants being neglected around here. I don't think anyone actually buys it, can just get a cutting by walking around as people leave cuttings on the sidewalk (like I did last week -- those cutting were likely the size of his big plants 😅). I'm guessing they're not frost hardy so snow is probably an issue. The leaves can get even redder when given more sun, but that may just be whatever type of jade we have.

Looking forward to better looking Jade plants, but by using the grow lights recommeneded on the link, (Sansi), do these lights come with a UK plug?

Not all of them do. It says which ones are suitable for UK

A lot of the new leaves on my jade come in wonky looking. Kind of heart shaped almost. Any idea why? I’ve got a grow light, the right soil mix and I think I have the watering right. I use rain water and fertilizer sparingly.

Does sound like watering stress to me.

My jade has big spots on a bunch of leaves. They’re brown and rough and bumpy spots. I don’t know what it is

I’ve wanted a jade for years. Now I finally got two from IKEA, one regular crassula ovara and one ovary hulk. I noticed that both are seriously rootbound and are sitting in a bone dry soil (some leaves are a bit wrinkly). Can I trim their roots as you have shown in another video with other plants or do jade plants not like that?

Yeah jades don’t mind that
