I did it with clementine last summer or spring. It did good but sadly i totally forgot about it (bc i put it outside) and in October i saw it again. I looked good so i just left it there and gave it some water (idk how it survived) then i forgot again and it lost all leaves (not a problem) but it always became more dry and dry from the outside but the roots where healthy! Idk what happened to it its still dried out and idk what to do now

I have germinated the lemon seeds on moist kitchen towel and left covered in the zip log bag and placed in the balcony with warm air from the aircon condenser. Has successfully germinated few pots and they are healthy. Just a word of caution - watch out for the butterfly as they tend to lay eggs on the leave and at times, caterpillar would eat up the leaves. Hence do watch them everyday to ensure no such pests to disturb your lemon seedling during the growing stage.

When I reuse plastic water bottles for planting seeds, before I put in the soil I put in a waxed paper liner. Just a cylinder of it, you don't want to block the bottom of the bottle/pot. Adding the paper liner makes the transplanting easier to get out of the bottle. Since I didn't cut the bottle in half, I can keep using it.

it's interesting, I have a 3 year old lemon tree I started from a seed and it only looks slightly older than your grapefruit. I attribute this to the soil not draining well and it then being watered rarely due to the drainage. I'm planning on repotting it with soil that drains better, and I'm sure it will take off once I do.
