Growing a mango tree from seed is a rewarding process. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Select a Mango: Choose a ripe, healthy mango from which to harvest the seed.
Extract the Seed:
Remove the flesh of the mango.
Clean the seed thoroughly to remove any remaining fruit pulp.
Allow the seed to dry for a day or two.
Prepare the Seed:
Carefully cut open the hard outer shell to reveal the inner seed. Be cautious not to damage the seed.
If the seed is already sprouting, it can be planted immediately.
Planting the Seed:
Fill a pot with a well-draining potting mix. A mix of sand, soil, and compost works well.
Plant the seed about an inch deep, with the convex side up.
Water the soil thoroughly but avoid waterlogging.
Germination:
Place the pot in a warm, sunny spot. Mango seeds need warmth to germinate.
Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
Germination can take a few weeks to a couple of months.
Transplanting:
Once the seedling is about 8-12 inches tall, it can be transplanted to a larger pot or directly into the ground if the climate is suitable.
Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil.
Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball of the seedling.
Place the seedling in the hole and backfill with soil, gently firming it around the base.
Water thoroughly after planting.
Care and Maintenance:
Water regularly, especially during dry periods.
Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer during the growing season.
Prune the tree to encourage healthy growth and shape.
Patience:
Mango trees grown from seed can take several years to produce fruit, often 5-8 years.
