How To Grow A Paphiopedilum spicerianum Or Ladies Slipper Orchid / Nandanam Exotics

Paphiopedilums Or Ladies Slipper orchids are some of the most sort after and prized plants in orchid gardening circles. Their long lasting blooms and complex morphological features makes them a popular choice among orchid collectors and plant geeks. I myself belong to this group of people who just can't get enough of these beauties. In this video I have tried to include mist relevent growing requirements specific to this genus of orchids. Nice video! But the pouch does not drown the bugs nor should it ever have water in it, it will rot. Actually, the dorsal petals of paphs are designed to keep water out as they experience natural rain fall in nature.

Thanks alot. I saw few documentaries saying the water collected in the pouch soaks the wings of the insects.... Thus disabling them to fly away... So they are left with only one option, that is to crawl out through the tunnel like passage. I might be wrong. It's true that it's not ment to drown and kill the bug... But just to disable it from flying.

@@NandanamExotics yes somewhat true! It just isnt water, its a slippery substance that makes the walls of the pouch slippery, it also provides slight scent if the paph is fragrant. I lost a bloom to rot after just 2 days because my humidifier, positioned incorrecrly, wet the pouch.

Hi Jenny. I am sorry to say I have not grown them from seeds... More over the seeds need a particular fungal association in order to germinate... This is usually achieved only in laboratories. So I will keep you posted on this matter if I get to know any alternative methods🙂

Check with orchid nurseries... Normal nurseries won't carry such species.

I just received my paph Spicerianum and it’s very young. I hope I will be able to keep it alive as I am used to phaleonopsis. May I ask what kind of fertilizer N-P-K and how frequent should they be fertilized? Thanks!

Currently since it's a young plant only provide it with nitrogen rich fertilizers for promoting growth... Such fertilizer comes with a high value for N and lower values for P&K.

Well I am from South India and it's really warm here... In my climate it goes up to 35-37 degree celsius..

I am in Florida and we are currently in low 90s Fahrenheit and will go warmer as summer is coming up, so around 98 Fahrenheit maybe higher. I looked it up and it says paphios can tolerate 70-75 for daytime. I just brought my paphio inside our house l because it’s going to reach 90 Fahrenheit now. It’s my first paphio that’s why I really can’t tell if I am giving it proper care. But I saw a new growth at the side… so maybe I am treating it well. I hope the new growth is strong enough to push the two leaves on top of it. I am worried. Lol!

Hey don't worry that much... Paphs love tropical conditions to my knowledge. Make sure to know the species you got.. If it's from a higher altitude then it might need cooler conditions...The one I am showing in the video is quiet heat tolerant...
