I just love this funky plant. I have one in a pot, he's pretty happy.

Having them near a humidifier and keeping it at around 60-70% is very helpful. I also mist them well at least every other day. I rarely water the soil and wait until the soil is completely dry.

Mine is planted in sphagnum moss in a pot and it’s sitting in my shower window. They appreciate the humidity and very bright, sometimes direct light depending on seasons, and it’s loving it. It hasn’t produced mature fronds yet and it’s busy creating it’s shield frond.

Staghorn's have a large rounded frond that forms a large cup at the top to collect fallen leaves. Elkhorn's have multiple divided fronds on a brown base and spread by making more plantlets. Where Staghorn's just grow one huge plant and only grow by spores on fertile fronds that hang from mature specimens at the front. Elks also get spores under their fronds but can be divided.

So this plant is an elkhorn then?

Mine is potted in a free draining around compost and it’s hanging on the wall right in my fireplace that has a growlight in the chimney! I mist it with rain water mixed with a couple of dissolvable fertiliser crystals mixed in.

I have a staghorn which I have had for a while. But, it did not get a shield. I bought another one about a week ago and it had a green shield already. Why did the other one not get a shield yet. Thank you.

hey there! i have a mounted elkhorn fern in a kokedama that has 3 short leaves. i imagine they have similar needs to a staghorn fern but is watering it every 3 days too much? i've been reading everywhere that they prefer to dry out between waterings but also you shouldn't let baby ferns dry out. which is it lol? i use a wooden stick to check the moisture & it only seems to be slightly moist, maybe on the verge of drying whenever i water it. i also have it set under a grow light but why are the tips of my leaves becoming limp and soft? i initially thought it was underwatered because i never soaked the whole rootball for 30~60 min but only used a watering can. so i soaked it for about 50 min but it's been 2 days now & the leaves are still limp & soft. is it too much light? what am i doing wrong here?

I live in the hot, dry and seemingly always windy San Fernando Valley. Temps here in summer are always in the 85-100 degree range. Very low humidity! I have never grown a staghorn fern here because I always thought of them as a fussy, needy plant. My daughter moved here from Oregon and brought with her a staghorn fern in a clay pot given to her as a house warming gift. She didn't want it and left it with me! I didn't want it either but I didn't have the heart to throw it away as I do love plants and gardening so I stuck it in a corner of my garden. It received partial sun only. I watered it maybe once a month. In winter maybe once every two months and we do not get much rain. Mostly, I forgot about it! Well, it thrived! After two years of what I would call neglect and it looked beautiful. So I decided to divide it. It's roots were so root bound I don't know how it survived! They had fused into one solid clump! I divided it and now I have two separate ferns! Both are beautiful. The parent is in a big clay pot and the other in a basket. I love them! I guess my point is that they are not at all fussy when grown outdoors so don't be afraid to grow one. If nights get below 40 degrees where you live they will need to be sheltered from the cold. Cover them or bring them inside.

I purchased a stag horn fern in a pot recently. Will it be ok if I take it out of the soil and mount it on wood? Or would it be better to just keep it in a pot situation? Thanks for the video, very interesting!

Hi! I grow mine indoors and they love it on top of my fridge under a skylight. Unfortunately the fronds are incredibly dusty. Can I wipe them off or do they need their furry hairs to grow? (I was always told not to touch the leaves of fuzzy plants but I’m getting desperate). Please help! Thanks.
@Governmenttruth4 жыл бұрын
Never clean the leaves of the fuzzy stuff. The plant will die if you do. Really.
