The Agave colorata, also known as the Mescal Ceniza, is an evergreen succulent plant native to Mexico. It can be grown outside in USDA zones 8 through 11. With its large rosettes of long, narrow leaves, this drought-tolerant plant thrives in sunny locations and has earned the nickname Mescal Sword in many areas throughout its natural habitat.

Summary
The Agave colorata, also known as the Mescal Ceniza, is an evergreen succulent plant native to Mexico. The plant is mostly found in semi-arid regions. It typically grows in exposed rocky settings, though it can also be found on steep slopes. This plant has spoon-shaped dusty blue leaves with spines along their margins and an extremely rough texture. The tips of the leaves also support a sharp terminal spine. Unlike some Agave, this one likes to stay on the small side, never reaching above 3 feet tall throughout its lifetime.
1. Light and Location
The Agave colorata prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun is ideal for this Agave, but partial shade is okay. If you plan on keeping it in full sun, ensure it does not receive direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Mescal ceniza may need winter protection in regions with wet winters and dry summers.
2. Watering
As with most succulents, Agave colorata does not require a lot of water. These plants need frequent watering while they are growing. The general guideline is that they should never be allowed to totally dry out because they are vulnerable to decay if left without water for a long period of time.
3. Temperature
The ideal temperature range for Agave colorata is 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. It can also tolerate temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit and as high as 85 degrees Fahrenheit, but there may be some leaf damage if it gets too cold or too hot for long periods.
4. Humidity
The optimum humidity level is between 40 to 60 percent. They prefer low humidity to grow best and remain healthy because high humidity can lead to rot.
5. Fertilization
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer at planting and once more in the early spring. Make sure to select a potting mix made for succulents if you're growing your agave in a container.
6. Propagation
Agave colorata can be propagated by offsets. The pups or offsets appear after the plant has finished blooming. The appearance of offsets is not always guaranteed. Remove the plantlets from the parent plant with a sharp knife. Allow the offsets to dry for a few days before planting them in a pot filled with good drainage soil. Water newly planted offsets regularly, but not too much, so they don’t rot from overwatering.
7. Potting and Repotting
The Agave colorata should be repotted in spring or summer. It is best to do so in spring after the plant has finished its growth cycle. Repot it after 2 to 3 years if you’re keeping it in a small pot and every five years if you’re growing it in a large one. Select an appropriate container with good drainage. You can use any plastic container with drainage holes in the bottom.
8. Toxicity and Common Pests
Agave colorata is mildly toxic to humans and animals. The sap of the Agave is caustic and can cause skin irritation. It is susceptible to Agave snout weevil and Scale Insects.
9. Common Problems
Over watering, Frost Burn and Sunburn are Some of Most Common Problems.
