I read a comment from someone in a growing forum saying they got pretty good cherries after three years of producing cherries. Grapes are supposed to be the same way, the younger more sour grape crops are sold to grocery stores and the mature sweeter crops are used specifically for wine where there's better profit.

One thing you might want to add. You can sprout cherries all you like, but for the most part you will need to be in a region with about 700 hours of cold weather for the plant to produce cherries. At least that is what the local nurseries here tell me as I love Rainier Cherries but now that I live in Florida, we only have about 360 and i'm told they will never produce.
@GreenthumbsGarden3 жыл бұрын
That is great info for me to add in the next update I want to add a faq. Thanks Roger. I read on average its 1000 chilling hours for them to produce but it depends greatly on type or cultivar. Check out ‘Royal Lee’ and ‘Minnie Royal' apparently they need as few as 300 hours chill time. I have no idea what amount of chill time we get here in Malaga but should be enough, we get a good few months of coldish weather.

Are you prepared to wait 15 years for lemons? I planted some lemon seeds and had a nice little tree growing in a pot. I worried about frost killing it so I brought it inside in the winter. Did this for years and no blooms or fruit. I finally looked up lemon trees in my propagation book from my horticulture course and the book said it takes 15 years to be mature enough to bear fruit. On the 15th year I had it outside getting sun and didn't know we were going to have a hard frost that night. The frost killed my tree. One thing I didn't know about lemon trees is that the leaves smell like lemons when you crush them. Oh yeah, another thing I didn't know about lemon trees is that they have huge long thorns on the branches. It makes handling them a bit painful. I would clip them off to avoid getting stuck.

Snuggly buggly. That's a whole lotta love, right there. My Dad is gone now, but he raised up a pear tree until it finally bore fruit. He watched one beautiful pear every day to make sure it came to no harm. No bugs, worms, moths, fungus. Nothing. There were quite a few, but one qualified as his 'prized pear'. His very first! My older sister lived a few door yards away. She visited one day, with a beautiful pear and huge grin. "Dad!!! Look what I found on your tree!!" My Dad fought in WWII, so not much would rattle him. Right then, I heard the color ran from his face like he died a thousand deaths. Before he completely melted down, she fessed up that his pear was still on the tree. She had purchased one to look as close to his as possible. The only reason he ever spoke to her again is because that is the same kind of practical joke he would play on someone if he thought of it!

I'm not 100% about cherry seeds but w all other seeds (many ) I have germinated myself, I've had a much greater and quicker success rate soaking them in regular household hydrogen peroxide. Its actually pretty amazing how much better and quicker results I get doing this. This includes soaking the paper towel as well. I don't see why it wouldn't do the same for cherry seeds when you consider the principles.

Can you germinate the whole cherry pit, or does it have to be cut with Wirecutter? I am looking for the cherry variety called "Duke". Is this variety exist? My great grandmother grew up hem, and from I remember, they are a black cherry and usually was picked before the Bing or Lambert cherries. She canned them in a syrup which tasted good. Is there a cherry growing guide and catalog on different varieties to grow in Western Slope of Colorado near Grand Junction? Please let me know on these questions, as I am thinking of going into the cherry growing market. Thank You

@GreenthumbsGarden2 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can try that, or a ziplock bag. The aluminium or ziplock is really just the help preserve moisture so the towel don't dry out so fast.
@moukafaslouka47962 жыл бұрын
The aluminum foil is there to simulate the darkness of the soil and to keep moisture. I have seen people use ziplock or even plastic bottles with very good results.

They won't grow true to seed, what you will get is a wild cherry tree with unknown characteristics, a genetic gamble from the patent plants... But we could always graft them in the future.

Thanks Rabia! yeah avoid over watering, I made that mistake on a few of my cherries. water when you see them dry a little on the top, if you poke your index finger in and its still moist I would wait until its dry. It'll all depend on how warm it is and your weather,.

Apple seeds from a certain apple will not give you an apple tree that produces the same apples. Apple seeds are not true to seed meaning you'll just end up with a crab apple tree. To grow the type of apple you like will require grafting from the original tree.

It's a hybrid accent due to social circles & locality & probably a couple of other factors. I'm trying again using your method using cherry seeds from a local grower who went out of business this summer. I hope they work because the grower's trees are not being taken care of and I'm hoping to get at least one to sprout and continue the linage. I know they won't be true to seed but I can always graft onto them if they don't produce good fruit. Update: all those seeds failed but I'm trying again. If at first you don't succeed...

exactly, its always a win win, despite what some say. The worse case scenario is you have a nice rootstock to graft with... or firewood...😂

Ranier cherries from The Okanagan in BC have a limited growing season so I've saved virtually every seed from every bag of cherries i purchased so far this summer and want to grow them in the bald-head prairie. I'm not sure this is possible since the semi-arid desert of Southern Alberta is a completely different climate and topography from the warm, humid and lush valleys of the interior of British Columbia. That's why I subscribed to this channel BEFORE watching this video. I pray my efforts work. Thank you for this wonderful video. Take care and God bless 🙌 🙏
