Nice video. I also have the Alocasia Fever. I have 18 various ones but 35 with doubles and Babies all together in my collection. Most are in Semi-Hydro with only my Azlanii, and Ninja being in a Soil mix. It’s advisable to get a young plant and condition it to Semi Hydro due to it being less expensive, easier adaptability to water/rooting, and they can handle the stress lighter. I have converted a large variegated Frydek to Semi Hydro but from the 9 leaves it lost 4 before it started pushing out bigger ones and growing thicker water roots though. I have noticed through this journey that the plants need water to hold their stems up. I don’t like the hanging stems look so a prop them up with chopsticks and Velcro strips. It also causes the stems to get thicker to support the weight of the leaves. It appears as though yours are reaching for light as the stems are all long. The Black Velvet must be closer to light due to its shorter of the leaves? A major reason for your membership in the “3 Leaves Club” is based on your letting them “dry out a little”. between watering. I have noticed that not only does the plant only keep 1-3 leaves, the stems hang down, and the plant often goes dormant. Now that I don’t practice any of these procedures NONE of them have gone dormant in years and they all have 4-9 leaves. When they are small ensure that the reservoir doesn’t dry out for too long. (Not longer than 1 day) As you mentioned, after the “Water roots” have been grown it basically doesn’t matter if the roots sit IN the water or not. The soil roots will root away but ensuring that they have oxygen will reduce the root rot and plants demise. I’m presently testing FLUVAL STRATUM as a Substrate long term. It causes the roots to grow very quickly but most are in LECA. I think it’s great but expensive in comparison to LECA. I also feed at every watering using 1/2 of the recommended dosage and I flush sometimes every 2 months or when I think of it. Not recommending Anyone do I as do, but it works for me. I would also suggest getting more light on the Babies if you don’t like the long stems hanging optic. There’s 2 types of Alocasia though. The “Jewel” being those with short stem genetics and those closer related to the “Colocasia” plants like the Regal Shield or Elephant Ear plants which have longer stems and leaves. Although it’s possible to get long stems and leaves from a Jewel Alocasia they will seldom be as large as a Mature Colocasia. Thanks for the video. My polly is doing exceptionally well in Leca. However it does takes time to really adapt to the Leca situation. For the first 2 month it has done nothing, but once they produced their thick water root it start push out big big leaves.

I just picked up one at my local Lowe's less the a week ago. It is happy and healthy as far as I can tell. I would like to switch it over to leca but am a little afraid to shock it. I don't want to see it loss all it's leaves.

Half of my alocasia odora bulb rotted away, the bottom part, which was in water. I actually looked to see if it's exceptional and can't be in leca. But after your video, I see that some of them just don't like it (my poly adjusted well, after it lost all of it's leaves in soil) and that can especially be the case if you move them after right after travel, which is exactly what I did. I was like "no use letting it sit in soil when they lose all the leaves in soil" and voila, it half rotted away...

i got an alocasia regal shield at home depot yesterday and i wanna put it in lecca it’s HUGE like yours. do i start by taking all the dirt off it and then plopping it in water ? and once it’s developed water roots place it in leca?? pls help

I think alocasias are more terrestrial than aroid. From my understanding aroids climb and terrestrials creep on the Forest floor. I have alocasia Amazonica and it’s doing wonderfully in leca❣️

The white on clayballs is not salt but calcium deposit. It doesn't harm the plant.

Yes, they are salts. Even though people say 'salt' when they are referring to sodium chloride (like in seawater or table salt), a salt is just a mineral compound that can dissolve in water and can be composed of various other elements, including calcium. Some examples include sodium hydroxide (lye), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and magnesium sulfate (epsom salts). Too much salt buildup (of any kind) can eventually harm the plant by raising the pH too much, which can interfere with nutrient absorption and lead to decreased growth and brown leaf tips.

@@mikouf9691 You can't eliminate the salt by rincng it with just tap water. I see people do it all the time but that doesn't help. The only thing that can neutralizes it a little bit is epsom salt but your can't dissolve it with tap water which is full of calcium itself.

@@sloeberdoet I have no problem removing it with tap water, but usually by soaking it for a few minutes, then rinsing. But if someone has hard tap water, they would be better off using rain water, distilled water, or reverse osmosis water.

How do you know how much water to add to the pot when they’re in a cache pot and a solid coloured nursery pot? I know where to put it when it’s in a clear glass pot but can’t seem to figure out how put to put when I can’t see it

She is using self watering pots with a water level indicator. Look up orthex, lechuza, and ehlo self watering pots.

Hope it’s doing better now! Sometimes the conversion can be difficult on the plant. It’s best to keep things pretty dry at first before giving full water 😊

Thanks for the video! I recently converted my tiny dancers to leca and was wondering what I should do if it did go dormant over the winter or anything. Do I continue normal water levels?

I havent had it happen to me but I would just keep it monitored in its setup with the same water levels, as if it were alive. It probably wont go dormant over winter unless it gets really cold or is subjected to stressful conditions. should be ok inside!
